Eagle Rock’s Read Books launched revolt against Los Angeles landlords

Eagle Rock’s Read Books launched revolt against Los Angeles landlords

On a Tuesday evening in Eagle Rock, used-bookstore owners Jeremy and Debbie Kaplan were closing up for the day when a stranger rushed through the entrance. He tossed an envelope onto the counter, said something like: “Building’s been sold,” and slipped out. Inside the envelope, the Kaplans found a 30-day notice: The shop’s $1,200 monthly rent would be increasing to $2,805 on April 1, they were required to decide whether they would accept the more than 133% price hike a month in advance, and they’d need to agree to a three- to five-year lease if so. The letter arrived Feb. 17, which meant the Kaplans had 11 days to accept the new landlord’s terms or leave. “We couldn’t even consider it,” Jeremy Kaplan said. “It would be suicide.” The couple looked around the 680-square-foot shop. From the floor to ceiling, more than 20,000 books were crammed every which way into shelves they’d built and stained themselves nearly 20 years before. “My first reaction was panic,” he said. “How are we going to move out of …

Bald Eagle Hatchlings Spotted in a Chicago Park May Be the City’s First for More Than a Century

CHICAGO (AP) — Two bald eagles hatchlings have been spotted in a nest in a Chicago park in what city officials believe is the raptors’ first successful wild breeding in the Windy City in more than a century. Chicago Park District officials announced last week that bird-watchers observed nesting activity starting in February in Park 597 along the Calumet River on the city’s Southeast Side. The first eaglet was spotted in the nest on April 28 and a second was confirmed May 7. Irene Tostado, a park district spokesperson, said the eaglets appear to be two to three weeks old. Pat Pearson and her husband, Steve, discovered the first eaglet. “We started looking around, and lo and behold, this little fuzzy head sticks up with a big beak and we were just ecstatic. Patty actually broke into tears. I started crying,” Steve Pearson said. “It was really very touching, because we had this kind of instinct, I think, just the wonder and the awe of seeing these eagles right here in Chicago with a baby. …

How to tell eagle parents Jackie and Shadow apart

How to tell eagle parents Jackie and Shadow apart

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. The two new eaglets eating, chirping, and “bopping” in their nest high above Southern California’s Big Bear Lake are arguably the stars of the popular wildlife livestream. But it’s devoted eagle parents Jackie and Shadow doing the really hard work behind the scenes—grabbing fish, protecting their babies from hungry ravens, and keeping them warm as their feathers grow in. However, it can be challenging to tell Jackie and Shadow apart and know who is sitting on the nest or feeding the eaglets. Fortunately, the team at Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) is here to help.  Yes, Jackie is bigger It’s a common misconception that males are always bigger than females. Jackie is actually a bit bigger than Shadow, so if both of them are on the nest tending to their chicks, she is the larger bird. According to the FOBBV, Jackie is about 3 feet tall, while Shadow is approximately 2.5 feet tall. Her wingspan is also wider by …

Police launch investigation after golden eagle found with shotgun injuries in Scottish Borders | UK News

A police investigation is under way after a four-year-old golden eagle was shot in the Scottish Borders. The bird of prey, called Hamlet, was found injured by a gamekeeper on an estate in Stanhope on 15 January. Hamlet, who was wearing a satellite tracking device, had been relocated from the Outer Hebrides in 2023 as part of the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project (SSGEP) to boost numbers in the area. Image: Hamlet’s injury. Pic: RUN/Scottish SPCA The animal was examined by a Scottish SPCA vet and was found to have suffered shotgun pellet injuries to his wing. He has since made a full recovery and has returned to the wild. Image: Dr Cat Barlow, chief executive of Restoring Upland Nature, releasing Hamlet. Pic: RUN/Phil Wilkinson Following a review of tracking data, experts believe Hamlet was shot during the first week of January in an area between Stanhope and Glenbreck, off the A701 Broughton to Moffat road. Police Scotland, with support from the UK National Wildlife Crime Unit, is searching for the culprit. Detective Sergeant …

QuantumScape opens Eagle Line pilot for solid-state production

QuantumScape opens Eagle Line pilot for solid-state production

Solid-state battery developer QuantumScape is off and running in 2026, inaugurating its shiny new Eagle Line for pilot production. Eagle Line lays the groundwork for scaled solid-state battery production and will produce cells to support OEM customer sampling. QuantumScape ($QS) actually invited me to this Eagle Line inauguration. Still, we’re covering the news remotely, because I’m located quite a ways from the solid-state cell developer’s San Jose headquarters. Whether it’s in person or from the other side of the country, QuantumScape remains one of the most exciting solid-state developers to report on, and today’s Eagle line pilot inauguration news is no different. As we reported last December, QuantumScape announced another successful year of progress, hitting every one of its 2025 target goals. That included integrating its proprietary “Cobra” solid-state separator process into baseline production, thus laying the groundwork for higher-volume B1 sample production of QuantumScape’s QSE-5 solid-state lithium-metal cells QuantumScape capped off 2025 with one last key goal: installing the necessary equipment for its “Eagle Line,” which would soon begin highly automated pilot production of battery cells. On …

Internet-famous duo Jackie and Shadow laid their first egg of 2026 on January 23. Fans can tune in 24/7 to the Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) livestream on YouTube. Jackie and Shadow returned to their California nest in October with the first stick delivery of the season. The stick and fluff delivery continued through fall as the pair reinforced their high-in-the-trees home in preparation for nesting season. They even set a record on November with at least 28 sticks delivered on the 22nd–the previous record was 25. Big Bear Bald Eagle Live Nest – Cam 1 The bald eagle couple captivated the internet last year with a dramatic journey. Jackie laid three eggs that all hatched successfully in early March. On the evening of March 13, a strong snowstorm hit the area, dumping up to two feet of snow and battering the nest with strong winds. The next morning, …

A guide to Eagle Rock, Los Angeles: What to do, see, eat

A guide to Eagle Rock, Los Angeles: What to do, see, eat

Eagle Rock, buttressed by Glendale to the west and Pasadena to the east, is named after the massive 50-foot-tall boulder that greets those entering from the 134 Freeway. When the sun is positioned just so, both the rock, formerly known as La Piedra Gorda, and its shadow are said to resemble the iconic bird. For locals, it’s a sight that tells them they’re home. With its “small town within a big city” feel, Eagle Rock has been viewed as much more low-key than its Northeast Los Angeles cousins Silver Lake, Los Feliz and Echo Park. “It’s the place where hipsters go to die or raise kids — which some people consider the same thing,” filmmaker-actor Jay Duplass told The Times when describing the quaint and hilly neighborhood, the setting of his 2015 HBO dramedy series “Togetherness.” Get to know Los Angeles through the places that bring it to life.
