Texas talk of swallowing eastern New Mexico is an old impulse

Texas talk of swallowing eastern New Mexico is an old impulse

When the speaker of the Texas House recently outlined his priorities for the next legislative session, he mentioned tax relief, the development of data centers and a notion that sent many eyebrows skyward. Dustin Burrows, a Republican from Lubbock, directed the chamber’s governmental oversight committee to study the legal and economic implications of Texas absorbing one or more counties in eastern New Mexico. The “conversation,” Burrows told the Dallas Morning News, “is ultimately about culture, opportunity and the right to choose a path that reflects the shared values of the Permian and Delaware basins,” a vast desert expanse awash in oil and natural gas. Apparently, Texas lawmakers have time and money to burn. The notion of the swaggering state swallowing a chunk of its resistant neighbor is completely far-fetched. Just four states have been carved from the territory of others: Kentucky, Maine, Vermont and West Virginia. And it’s been quite a spell since the last time that happened. West Virginia split off from Confederate Virginia in 1863. Realistically, there is no end of hurdles — …

L.A.’s history-making wolf lands in Eastern Sierra, seeks forever home

L.A.’s history-making wolf lands in Eastern Sierra, seeks forever home

A wolf that seized national attention when she ventured into Los Angeles County earlier this year continues to make history. The 3-year-old female with black fur entered Inyo County around 7 a.m. Sunday about 20 miles south of Mt. Whitney. She became the first documented wolf to set paws in the Eastern Sierra county in more than a century, according to state wildlife officials. By early Monday afternoon, she had pushed deeper into the county to west of the community of Bartlett, said Axel Hunnicutt, gray wolf coordinator for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Her movements are tracked with a GPS collar. Share via Close extra sharing options The wolf — known as BEY03F — essentially traversed the Sierra Nevada in the span of three to four days, a feat Hunnicutt believes was made possible by a low snowpack this season. She was “able to amazingly quickly cross quite mountainous terrain,” he said. “I don’t think I could do that in three days.” The roughly 60-mile journey adds to the hundreds of miles …

Analysis-Hormuz Closure Divides the Fortunes of Middle Eastern Oil States

Analysis-Hormuz Closure Divides the Fortunes of Middle Eastern Oil States

By Ahmad Ghaddar and Yousef Saba LONDON, April 6 (Reuters) – The Strait of Hormuz’s closure and the resulting surge in global oil prices have handed financial windfalls to Iran, Oman and Saudi Arabia, while other states that lack alternative shipment routes have lost billions of dollars, a Reuters analysis found. Iran effectively shut the Strait – a route for about a fifth of global oil and LNG flows – after U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran at the end of February led to a widening conflict. It later said it would allow transits by vessels that had no U.S. or Israeli links. As a result, some tankers have managed to cross the narrow waterway, but energy markets have still experienced unprecedented disruption. International ‌Brent crude rose by 60% in March, a record monthly increase. U.S. President ‌Donald Trump has threatened to rain “hell” on Tehran unless it makes a deal by the end of Tuesday that would allow traffic to start moving through the Strait of Hormuz. NATO eastern flank: Germany withdraws Eurofighters from Poland

NATO eastern flank: Germany withdraws Eurofighters from Poland

The German Air Force is withdrawing its Eurofighters from Poland, bringing its mission there to an end. Around 150 Bundeswehr personnel – including pilots, technicians, logistics specialists, security forces and military police – have left the Malbork base in the north of the country and are returning to Germany. In a post on X, the high command of the Polish armed forces thanked the Bundeswehr for its support, describing it as an “extremely important gesture of cooperation within the framework of collective defence”. The mission had been scheduled from the outset to run until March 2026. It remains unclear who will replace the German troops in Malbork. The deployment began in December last year as part of the so-called “NATO Enhanced Air Policing” mission. Its aim was to bolster the alliance’s eastern flank in the face of Russian threats – such as repeated airspace violations and risky close passes by Russian fighter jets. This repeatedly led to dangerous situations requiring intervention by NATO jets. In such cases, the mission is designed to monitor the airspace, …

Four years after deadly China Eastern plane crash, investigators offer no answers

Four years after deadly China Eastern plane crash, investigators offer no answers

SHANGHAI: China’s aviation regulator has not released an annual update on its investigation into a deadly China Eastern Airlines crash for the second year in a row, letting the fourth anniversary pass without providing any insight into the cause. On Mar 21, 2022, the China Eastern Boeing 737-800 jet plunged into a hillside in the southwestern region of Guangxi about an hour after takeoff, killing all 132 people on board in China’s deadliest air disaster in three decades. Global aviation guidelines call for an initial report within 30 days of an accident and a final one ideally within a year so the industry can learn lessons from what went wrong and work to improve safety. Failing that, investigators are expected to issue statements on each anniversary, but the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) last provided an update in March 2024 and victims’ relatives remain in the dark about what caused the plane to nosedive from cruising altitude rather than land in Guangzhou as planned. The regulator’s earlier updates were only a few paragraphs long, offering scant …

Middle Eastern countries suffer vastly different death tolls as the conflict spreads from Iran

A bloodstained mattress in a room at the Comfort Hotel, which was targeted by an Israeli strike that left one dead and three injured, in Baabda, Lebanon, on March 4, 2026. RAFAEL YAGHOBZADEH FOR LE MONDE Six days after Israel and the United States started the current war against Iran, on Saturday, February 28, the conflict has now spread to the Gulf countries and Lebanon. Yet, at this stage, the human death toll appears to be vastly different on each side of the war. While the conflict has spread to affect the entire region, the countries directly or indirectly involved in it have not suffered in the same way. Despite facing several hundred missiles and drones launched by Iran, Israel and the Gulf states have suffered relatively few fatalities. The death toll has been much higher in Iran and Lebanon, which have come under continuous fire and bombardment. The Iranian death toll is uncertain The Islamic Republic of Iran has yet to release any official casualty figures. The Iranian Red Crescent has cited a provisional …
