©House of Commons Lauren Edwards MP’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill has been published. The Bill is the same as the one passed by MPs in June last year, except for three minor amendments agreed in the House of Lords. Humanists UK, alongside terminally ill humanist celebrant Victoria Denning and Leah Finegold, whose grandmother Barbara died after being denied the choice of an assisted death, is calling on MPs to back the Bill and finally give dying people choice and compassion. Why is it the same Bill? The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was undemocratically filibustered in the House of Lords by a minority of peers.  By putting forward the same Bill again, Lauren Edwards MP is giving the House of Lords additional time and a second chance to deal effectively with the Bill. The Bill, which has already received an unprecedented amount of scrutiny, should go through every stage again. The veteran TV executive, 74, made the comments during his appearance before the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, which is conducting an inquiry into the future of the national broadcaster. The BBC has previously urged Edwards to return the substantial sum, which he received in the five months following his arrest, during which time he remained employed by the corporation. Speaking to MPs on Wednesday, Dr Shah stated that the BBC had “not abandoned hope” that Edwards – who was formerly one of the broadcaster’s highest-paid newsreaders – would ultimately return the money. Edwards was one of the BBC’s highest-paid newsreaders, known for presenting the BBC’s News at Ten for decades, before he pled guilty to making indecent images of children in July 2024. He was given a six-month suspended jail sentence and was added to the sex offenders’ register. A new Substack blog launched by disgraced newsreader and convicted sex offender Huw Edwards has been met with incredulity. Britain’s one-time highest-paid news anchor pleaded guilty in 2024 to receiving and making indecent images of children and was given a six-month suspended jail sentence – but he’s now launched the blog in an attempt to rebuild “some kind of worthwhile life”. Humanists UK and My Death, My Decision welcome the return of the Bill and urge MPs to support the Bill again. About the filibuster of the Assisted Dying Bill:  The Terminally Ill Adults Bill failed in the House of Lords after nearly 1,300 changes to the Bill were proposed, a record for any parliamentary Bill. Amendments have included a pregnancy test for all applicants, including men, a one-year holiday ban for applicants, and an unworkable requirement for half a dozen GP visits. We have identified several instances of peers being explicitly clear that they were trying to block the Bill by means other than it being voted down. Congratulations are in order for Little Mix alum Perrie Edwards who has tied the knot with her long-time partner, footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, in Portugal after a four-year engagement.  According to the Daily Mail, the couple, who share two children together and got engaged in June 2022, said “I do” on Saturday, 13 June in a small church ceremony in the quaint village of Estoi.  In pictures obtained by the publication, the bride stunned in an intricate white lace gown that trailed to the floor and featured a corset bodice and long sleeves. Perrie had her blonde tresses fashioned up in a slicked-back bun for her big day and carried a bunch of white calla lilies down the aisle. Meanwhile, Alex looked dapper in a black suit and bowtie with a matching lily boutonnière.  The couple had a limited number of close family and friends at the overseas ceremony, which reportedly totalled around 70.
