Jeff Hiller Won an Emmy. So Why Isn’t Hollywood Calling?

About 20 years ago, Jeff Hiller auditioned to play Kenneth Parcell, the demonically sunny NBC page ultimately portrayed by Jack McBrayer, in the pilot of 30 Rock. As things tended to go for Hiller back then, he did not get the job.  “We all knew it was written for Jack, so I never even pretended that I was going to get it,” Hiller says now. But then, a surprise silver lining: “Tina Fey called me back and was like, ‘You’ve got really good timing’ — which kept me going for several years.”  Fey went on to cast Hiller as a hotel clerk in 30 Rock’s third season — and, in a true rarity for any actor not named Rachel Dratch, brought him back years later to play a completely different character.  That second role, as a flight attendant, came as an offer — no audition needed. “That had never happened in my entire career and has only happened two or three times since,” Hiller says. “It was a huge surprise, and it made me feel …

It’s a good time to be a fan of TV. We’re getting a flurry of new and returning shows in the coming weeks, so the Little Gold Men team felt it was time to take stock of the TV landscape as Emmy season kicks off, with nominations slated for July 8 (it’s not as far away as you might think!). But we’re keeping an eye on The Comeback, which has never been nominated for the comedy-series award before. The third season, which follows Lisa Kudrow’s …

Candidates for the Legacy Award — which may only be bestowed on a program once — must have (a) accumulated a minimum of 60 episodes across a minimum of five seasons and (b) demonstrated continued or sustained relevance, influence or inspiration to a genre of television, an existing or new audience or society and culture. Franchise properties must be considered as a whole and awarded as such. Shows that are no longer running, but made a major impact, such as All in the Family (1971-1979, nine seasons) and Will & Grace (1998-2006, 2017-2020, 11 seasons), clearly are eligible for the honor. So, too, are ongoing programs, such as Grey’s Anatomy (2005-, 22 seasons) and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005-, 17 seasons), and soon-to-depart …
