‘Those girls deserve justice’: Minister’s emotional plea after boys spared jail for raping teenagers

A government minister held back tears as he said two girls “deserve justice” after two teenage boys were spared jail for raping them. The trial at Southampton Crown Court heard the girls were raped on two separate occasions in Fordingbridge, Hampshire. The first attack was on 26 November 2024 and the second was on 17 January 2025. The boys, both aged 15, were given youth rehabilitation orders (YRO) and made subject to intensive supervision and surveillance (ISS). Chief secretary to the prime minister Darren Jones heard testimony from one of the victims on Sunday, in which she said the judge’s decision not to hand down a prison sentence to her attackers was like a “rock straight in my face”. In an interview with the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme, one of the victims – who was 15 at the time of the incident – asked: “What was the point in putting me through that?” Speaking anonymously alongside her family, the now-16-year-old said the judge’s decision “almost made it seem as if what the boys …

Emotional Wellness in the Age of TikTok

Emotional Wellness in the Age of TikTok

Your inbox likely contains various emails this month on mental health awareness. How do you distinguish between useful and unhelpful information? Not everything labeled “helpful advice” truly offers value. To understand what it means to be emotionally well-balanced under pressure, we need a clear framework that goes beyond superficial tips. Journalists interested in the use of TikTok to dispense mental health advice recently asked a panel of mental health experts about the advice that was provided on the platform. The experts concluded that over half of the information on TikTok about mental health was incorrect. If that were not concerning enough, research has demonstrated that anyone regularly using TikTok will be at an increased risk of experiencing depression and anxiety, especially those under the age of 24. Signs of Trouble Society has made tremendous advances in technology, science, and health care over the past century. At the same time, very little progress has been made in the levels of emotional wellness that people experience. Considering the increased rates of suicide, depression, anxiety, and overdose over …

How a mother’s narcissism might shape her daughter’s emotional health

How a mother’s narcissism might shape her daughter’s emotional health

Young women who perceive their mothers as having highly self-centered traits are more likely to struggle with maintaining their own emotional stability. These results suggest that a parent’s inability to show empathy might negatively impact how a daughter learns to process feelings in early adulthood. The research was published in Frontiers in Psychology. Narcissism involves a grand sense of self-importance combined with a constant need for admiration. People with highly narcissistic personalities tend to prioritize their own personal desires over the feelings of others. They frequently lack the ability to empathize with the people around them. This creates a difficult environment within a family unit. A narcissistic parent might view children merely as extensions of themselves. They often struggle to offer genuine emotional support or validate a child’s independent thoughts and feelings. Children growing up in this type of environment frequently learn to suppress their own emotions to avoid harsh criticism. They might learn early on that maintaining outward appearances matters more than addressing genuine emotional pain. Emotional balance describes a person’s ability to navigate …

Failure, Forgiveness, and Emotional Inheritance in Fatherhood

Failure, Forgiveness, and Emotional Inheritance in Fatherhood

I have been a father for 40 years, a grandfather for 16 years, and a family psychologist in clinical practice for more than four decades. Throughout these years, I have carefully investigated fatherhood, and conscientiously invested in it, from both a personal and professional vantage point. For thousands of clinical hours, and countless personal, family hours, I have experienced fatherhood unfolding across lifetimes and generations. I have treated birth fathers, step-fathers, adoptive fathers, single fathers, widowed fathers, adolescent fathers, fathers of children with special needs and chronic mental or physical illnesses, fathers of LGBTQ+ children, gay and bisexual fathers, trans fathers, non-resident fathers (as a result of work travel, military deployment, or incarceration), stay-at-home fathers, ill and dying fathers, fathers who tragically lost their children to death by disease or suicide, fathers raising children as a result of artificial reproductive technologies—and of course grandfathers and even great-grandfathers. Since beginning my practice in 1983, becoming a father in 1987, and becoming a grandfather in 2010, I have seen times change, as they always do, and I …
