Commuters evacuated after smoke seen coming from train at Bukit Gombak station

SINGAPORE: Commuters were evacuated from a train at Bukit Gombak station at about 11.40am after smoke was seen coming from underneath the carriage on Tuesday (Sep 15).  Preliminary checks suggest that the smoke may have been caused by a faulty brake, SMRT Trains President Lam Sheau Kai said in response to CNA queries.  “As a safety precaution, our staff promptly assisted all commuters to leave the train safely. The train was then withdrawn to the depot for further checks,” he said. “Train services continued to operate normally. There were no reports of commuters needing medical assistance.” Mr Ming Wing Cheong, 44, was one of the passengers asked to alight. He told CNA that he was “a little confused” as he was not told what was happening. “I saw smoke on the roof of one of the train cars,” Mr Ming said. He said that there was just an eight- to 10-minute delay while waiting for the next train. Source link

Hundreds evacuate after Russian strike on depot near Kyiv kills at least 37

At least 37 people have died after a Russian drone struck a depot near Kyiv’s western suburbs overnight, sparking a huge fire and explosions, authorities said Saturday. The depot appeared to have been storing “explosive objects”, Ukrainian prosecutors said, as President Volodymyr Zelensky suggested ammunition was to blame. “Those who allowed this to happen must be held accountable for their decisions … ammunition cannot be stored near homes or other residential areas,” he wrote on X. Russia and Ukraine have for several months been intensifying their long-range strikes, increasingly targeting civilian infrastructure such as logistics warehouses and oil and port facilities. These attacks are causing a growing number of civilian casualties. The blast damaged surrounding residential areas, as well as a care home for the elderly and disabled people, Zelensky said. The depot was located in the town of Myla, on Kyiv’s western outskirts. Officials did not say whether it was a military or civilian enterprise. ‘Criminal negligence’ Ukrainian prosecutors said they had opened an investigation. “On 28 August at around 8:10pm (1710 GMT), an …

The blaze, known as the Hawk Fire, has grown to more than 15,000 acres since it began Saturday in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, according to data posted by the National Interagency Fire Center’s Inciweb late Sunday. “We can confirm that the fire was human caused,” Shane Akerson, a battalion chief with the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and one of three incident commanders for the Hawk Fire, said at a press conference late Sunday morning. “However, that is still undergoing active investigation.” He said at least six people, including three first responders and three civilians, have been injured, and several properties have been destroyed. Thousands evacuate after Indonesia quake kills 53, aftershocks hamper rescue efforts

FEAR OF AFTERSHOCKS At a now-closed port in Maumere, littered with debris from a collapsed roof and walls, residents told Reuters they were scared of aftershocks. The disaster agency said on Sunday nearly a thousand aftershocks had been recorded since the quake. Nearby, hundreds of residents filled a sports stadium, which has been designated as an evacuation spot. As the sun was setting, residents stood in line to get warm drinks. Some mothers hooked pieces of clothing to tent frames to form makeshift cradles for their babies. Other children played soccer outside. Margaretha Movaldes Da Maga Bapa, head of the region’s disaster mitigation agency, said the quake had brought back memories of the one residents experienced in 1992. “We’ve had quakes often. But this one really brings back the trauma of the one from 1992,” she said, as aid such as food and tents filled her office in trucks. Suryaman, a rescue agency official, told Reuters the priority was clearing rubble in the most-affected areas of Manggarai, East Manggarai and Nagekeo to find people possibly …

Hundreds of villagers evacuate as Belgium battles record wildfire

Hundreds of villagers evacuate as Belgium battles record wildfire

Hundreds of villagers were under evacuation orders in eastern Belgium on Saturday as firefighters battled one of the country’s worst-ever wildfires, with vast swathes of nature reserve turned to a singed wasteland. Reinforcements were pulled from across the country to fight the blaze that broke out Friday in the High Fens park near the German border and quickly spread, with helicopters and water bombers flying in from across the EU to help. Described by officials as the largest in Belgium’s modern history, the blaze broke out in an area of fragile peatlands and pine forests that was ravaged by massive wildfires in 1911, during a similar period of extreme heatwaves and drought. By late Saturday, it had scorched more than 2,700 hectares (6,700 acres), up from a mere 80 hectares on Friday, the local authorities said in a statement. The cause of the fires is unknown, but they’ve been fueled by high winds and hot, dry weather. Local and out-of-state firefighters have been working to contain the blazes. There have been no immediate reports of deaths or injuries. The fires are among 17 statewide, officials said. Speaking to NPR’s Morning Edition, Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown said nearly half of the city’s neighborhoods have either been evacuated or are at risk as the fire that has engulfed about 12 square miles has yet to be contained. “A very large geography has been labeled Level …

Over 600 structures lost as tens of thousands evacuate in Washington state wildfires

Wildfires burning in the Spokane, Washington, region continued burning Sunday, destroying more than 600 structures and forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate. The three blazes, which collectively are being called the Spokane Complex Fire, have burned 7,708 acres and are 0% contained, according to a federal incident management team that is coordinating the response. No injuries have been reported for any of the fires. The fires are “really the worst natural disaster our region has faced,” Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. The Spokane Complex Fire includes the Old Trails Fire, which has burned 3,619 acres; the Fairview Fire, which stands at 1,056 acres burned; and the Autumn Lane Fire, which has consumed 3,351 acres, according to federal incident management. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., said the fires were caused by “a historic weather event,” as the National Weather Service called for elevated fire weather Sunday, including north-northwest winds up to 35 mph and dry conditions that will quickly fuel flames. George and Amal Clooney Evacuate Their French Villa Amid Wildfires

George and Amal Clooney Evacuate Their French Villa Amid Wildfires

This isn’t exactly how George Clooney imagined this summer would go. At the upcoming Venice Film Festival (September 2–12), he will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, and in the weeks leading up to it, he had planned a quiet, relaxing time with his wife, Amal, and their twins, Alexander and Ella (age nine), at their villa in France. Instead, they had to evacuate their home in Brignoles, in the South of France, due to the wildfires ravaging the surrounding areas. The star of Ocean’s Eleven wrote a letter to the town’s mayor after the evacuation, which his spokesperson confirmed to People magazine. “At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” the letter reads. It continues: “As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasize 2 things. First we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part …
