Exclusive-US officials weigh cutting deadlines to fix digital flaws amid worries over AI-powered hacking, sources say

WASHINGTON, May 1 : U.S. cybersecurity officials are considering sharply shorter deadlines for fixing critical flaws in government IT systems, amid concerns hackers could exploit them using artificial‑intelligence tools such as Anthropic’s Mythos, people familiar with the matter said.  The move, which has not been previously reported, would slash the deadline for responding to actively exploited vulnerabilities from an average of two or three weeks to three days, the people said. Anxiety over the power and proliferation of AI models like Mythos and OpenAI’s GPT‑5.4‑Cyber has been building for weeks. Although hackers have been deploying AI since at least 2023, these newer models are said to be able to easily identify previously unknown vulnerabilities or seize on freshly disclosed ones to enable complex hacking operations. So while it previously might have taken hackers several months, weeks, or days to take advantage of software flaws, that timeframe has been compressed, in at least some cases, to a matter of hours. That in turn is putting pressure on defenders to kick into high gear, said Stephen Boyer, …

Exclusive-US Will Not Renew Waiver on Iranian Oil as It Mounts Pressure on Tehran, Sources Say

Exclusive-US Will Not Renew Waiver on Iranian Oil as It Mounts Pressure on Tehran, Sources Say

By Timothy Gardner and Andrea Shalal WASHINGTON, April 14 (Reuters) – The U.S. will not renew a 30-day waiver of sanctions on Iranian oil at sea that expires this week, and quietly let a similar waiver on sanctions on Russian oil expire over the weekend, two administration officials told Reuters on Tuesday, as the U.S. imposes a blockade on shipments from Iranian ports.   Tuesday’s move signals that “Treasury is going full force ‌on Economic Fury” on Iran, an apparent ‌reference to Operation Epic Fury, the U.S.-led military campaign against the country, one of the officials said. The Trump administration has long said it is applying “maximum pressure” on Iran over its nuclear program and support for militants across the Middle East, though sanctioned oil has continued to reach China. The waiver, which the Treasury Department issued on March 20, allowed some 140 million barrels of oil to reach global markets and helped relieve pressure on energy supply during the war on Iran, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last month. The waiver is set to expire on …

Exclusive-US Broker Touts Huge Returns for FIFA World Cup Ticket Investors

NEW YORK, Feb 24 (Reuters) – A Miami-based ticket broker offered investors 50% returns over six months through a plan to resell FIFA World Cup tickets at steep markups, even as angry fans say “extortionate” prices are shutting them out of the world’s most-watched sporting event. TicketKings, which was founded in 2019 and says on its website that its goal is to “democratize access to ‌live entertainment,” sought $5.5 million to buy 8,000 ‌World Cup tickets for matches involving England, Brazil and Scotland, among others, and offered returns as high as 87%, according to a pitch deck from the company that was reviewed by Reuters. In the proposal, TicketKings warned that the tickets could be cancelled by a “FIFA invalidation or enforcement actions,” though the firm said it takes steps to mitigate these risks. The investment proposal, which has not been previously reported, surfaced as global soccer fans vent their anger over ticket prices for the June 11-July 19 tournament in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Prices already are the highest in the World Cup’s …

Exclusive-US Aims for March Peace Deal in Ukraine, Quick Elections, Sources Say

By Tom Balmforth, Gram Slattery, Erin Banco and John Irish KYIV, Feb 6 (Reuters) – U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators have discussed an ‌ambitious March goal for Russia and Ukraine to agree on a peace ‌deal, though that timeline is likely to slip given a lack of agreement on the key issue of territory, according to three sources familiar with the matter. Under the framework being discussed by U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators, any deal would be submitted to a referendum by Ukrainian voters, who would simultaneously vote in national elections, according to five sources, who requested anonymity to discuss private deliberations.  The U.S. negotiating ‍team – led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner – has expressed to Ukrainian counterparts in recent meetings in Abu Dhabi and Miami that it would be best if that vote occurred soon, three of those sources said.  U.S. negotiators have said Trump is likely to focus more on domestic affairs as the November congressional midterms approach, meaning top U.S. officials will have less time and …

Exclusive-US Senators unveil bill to prevent scam ads on social media platforms

Feb 4 : U.S. Senators Ruben Gallego and Bernie Moreno have introduced anti-scam legislation requiring social media platforms to vet their advertisers. The bipartisan bill, called the Safeguarding Consumers from Advertising Misconduct Act, or the SCAM Act, would require social media platforms to take “reasonable steps” to combat fraudulent advertising or face legal action by the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general. “We can’t sit by while social media companies have business models that knowingly enable scams that target the American people,” Moreno, a Republican from Ohio, said in a statement. “If a company is making money from running ads on their site, it has a responsibility to make sure those ads aren’t fraudulent,” said Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona. A press release outlining the bill cited Reuters reporting in November that revealed how Meta Platforms – the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – expected to earn 10 per cent of its 2024 revenue, or about $16 billion, from ads for scams and other illicit products, according to internal company documents. Following the …
