Germany’s Merz blasts ‘lost’ US leadership and says global order ‘no longer exists’ – POLITICO

Germany’s Merz blasts ‘lost’ US leadership and says global order ‘no longer exists’ – POLITICO

Merz also drew a lesson from Germany’s own history. “We Germans know a world in which might makes right would be a dark place,” he said. “Our country has gone down this path in the 20th century until the bitter and dreadful end.” Most strikingly, the chancellor confirmed discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron about a European nuclear deterrent. The speech amounted to a strategic repositioning of Germany: still anchored in NATO, but preparing for a future in which American guarantees are less reliable and Europe must carry more responsibility. That message echoed remarks earlier in Munich from U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Elbridge Colby, who called for a “NATO 3.0” in which European allies assume a far greater share of defense burdens while Washington prioritizes other theaters. The United States wants “vigorous, capable, more self-reliant European allies,” Colby said, adding America had long carried a “vastly disproportionate share” of the burden. He singled out Germany for special praise for its “historic, tremendous shift” in defense spending. Merz signaled Berlin is already preparing for a scenario …

I refuse to pay for Wallpaper Engine when this open-source alternative exists

I refuse to pay for Wallpaper Engine when this open-source alternative exists

It’s 2026, and what did we bring along with us? Subscription fatigue and microtransaction burnout. We have to pay monthly for music, movies, cloud storage, and even a heated seat in our cars. And while Wallpaper Engine is technically a one-time $4 fee rather than a monthly tithe, it still begs the question: Why have we normalized paying for desktop wallpapers at all? A while ago, I decided to cut down on paid apps I pay for and went with free, open-source app alternative. And I decided to start with my desktop’s wallpaper. I used to pay for the Wallpaper Engine just so that I could set the wallpaper the way I like. That’s when I installed Lively Wallpaper. It made me realize I don’t need to pay a dime just to put any wallpaper I want. It does it for free and often offers better performance and significantly more freedom. OS Windows Developer rocksdanister Lively Wallpaper is an open-source engine that converts videos, GIFs, webpages, and shaders into dynamic wallpapers. It features drag-and-drop setup, …

The electric minivan Dodge needs already exists – just not here

The electric minivan Dodge needs already exists – just not here

Last week, I argued that Dodge was wasting its time building muscle cars and hiring “badassadors,” and that what the brand needed to change its fortunes was a new electric minivan. That van already exists. Meet the Leapmotor D99. The new D99 electric people-mover from the Stellantis-backed Leapmotor brand made its debut last week at Leapmotor’s 10th anniversary bash as a BEV packing a 115 kWh battery and 720 km (~450 miles) of range on the WLTP cycle. That battery might be newsworthy, on its own, too. One of the latest new offerings from Chinese battery experts CATL, the new Leapmotor van’s battery pack is built on a 1000-volt high-voltage electrical system that promises both ultra-fast charging and reduced losses for better overall energy efficiency. Driving the new D99 should be nice enough, but when you need it (or just can’t be bothered), an advanced ADAS powered by a pair of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 delivering some 1280 TOPS of computational power and supporting VLA (Visual-Language-Action) large language models can step in to keep you and …
