I can use GNOME without these 5 extensions, but I really don’t want to

GNOME has always been one of the most popular desktop environments on Linux, and for good reason. It has always offered a cohesive, easy-to-navigate workspace that felt like macOS in all the right ways. It’s right up there with KDE in being one of the best desktop environments of all time. That being said, it’s not perfect. The out-of-the-box experience is lacking, to say the least, and some of the design choices remain questionable. Thankfully, GNOME does allow for the use of extensions, some of which can completely transform the user interface. Many of these I would even consider essential, given how quirky and frustrating the default workflow can often be. I’ll be listing a few favorites here, all of which are essential to my daily workflow. Related GNOME OS revealed what Linux is actually becoming It will be more than a Desktop Environment soon. I turned my Chrome new tab into a Google Discover feed with 2 free extensions

I turned my Chrome new tab into a Google Discover feed with 2 free extensions

Google Discover is one of the better things Google has built. It’s the personalized news feed that learns what you care about and shows you relevant stories, delivered to your smartphone with a single swipe (or in Chrome on Android). But for reasons Google refuses to really elaborate on, it has never brought Discover to desktops. Now, that is set to change, but Google is also keeping tight-lipped about when that change might come. So, in the meantime, you can build your own Discover feed of sorts with a couple of Chrome extensions, sometimes with the page inspection tool, and a little troubleshooting. Thankfully for you, I’ve already done most of the troubleshooting, so it’s on to making your Chrome new tab into something like Google Discover. Related I found an Android browser that runs Chrome extensions — and I don’t get why it’s not popular It’s strange seeing my favorite extensions running on mobile. How I turned my new tab into a Google Discover-style feed Only takes a few minutes To make this work, …

iOS 27 Rumored to Feature All-New Siri App With ‘Extensions’ Feature

iOS 27 Rumored to Feature All-New Siri App With ‘Extensions’ Feature

In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman discussed Apple’s upcoming AI plans in more detail. As he reported last week, this will apparently include a Siri app with a so-called “Extensions” feature across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. With the Siri app, the report said that iPhone, iPad, and Mac users would be able to interact with Apple’s assistant in both text and voice modes. The app would also provide users with access to their past conversations with Siri. Overall, the Siri app would function similarly to the ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude apps. Siri has been able to tap into ChatGPT since iOS 18.2, and the “Extensions” feature would allow for additional third-party chatbots to be connected. “Extensions allow agents from installed apps to work with Siri, the Siri app and other features on your devices,” reads fine print in the Settings app on an internal, pre-release version of iOS 27, according to Gurman. The first developer beta of iOS 27 should be available in June, ahead of a wide release …

Israeli Military Chief Warns Army Nearing Internal Collapse As Netanyahu Pushes Service Extensions

Israeli Military Chief Warns Army Nearing Internal Collapse As Netanyahu Pushes Service Extensions

In a surprising announcement splashed all over Israeli media front pages, especially given the ongoing censorship regimen related to the Iran war, Israel’s military chief has sounded the alarm over a severe manpower crisis in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Military Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has warned the “IDF is going to collapse in on itself” during a security cabinet meeting this week, according to Times of Israel and others. This as Israeli forces are now fighting on multiple fronts: there’s the major war against Iran, as well as the ‘northern front’ against Hezbollah in Lebanon and amid IAF airstrikes on Beirut, and Israeli forces are still operating in Gaza.  via AFP “I am raising 10 red flags in front of you,” Gen. Zamir warned the country’s civilian leadership, citing intensifying operational demands across all the fronts. “Right now, the IDF needs a conscription law, a reserve duty law, and a law to extend mandatory service,” he laid out, per local media sources. “Before long, the IDF will not be ready for …

Extensions, plugins, and add-ons aren’t the same thing — and I’ve been mixing them up for years

Extensions, plugins, and add-ons aren’t the same thing — and I’ve been mixing them up for years

Somewhere between installing a grammar checker and grabbing a reverb effect for my DAW, it dawned on me that I’d been tossing around the words extension, plugin, and add-on like they were interchangeable. Like three different names for the same thing. Close enough, right? Not really. The differences are subtle, which is probably why most people never bother digging into them. And to be fair, the tech world hasn’t helped much, as plenty of big-name apps blur those lines, anyway. That alone makes it worth unpacking. Extensions are designed to stay in their lane They borrow your browser’s language and run with it If you had asked me a while back, I would’ve said extensions were just “plugins for browsers.” That’s not quite right. An extension is usually a lightweight piece of software written specifically to modify or enhance an existing application, typically a browser, using the same language the host application already understands. Chrome extensions, for instance, are built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, which are basically the native languages of the web itself. …

I can’t browse on Android without these 5 extensions

I love browsing on my phone, but I hate everything that comes with it. Intrusive ads, broken dark modes, and videos that stop the moment you switch apps. One of the things that makes browsing on a PC fun is the third-party extensions. I rely on a few of them, and they fix some of the worst parts of the internet. To bring that same experience to my Android phone, I use FireFox. It’s one of the best Chrome alternatives that supports extensions. These make browsing on a small screen way more convenient than what you get out of the box. I put these 5 open-source extensions on every browser I touch

I put these 5 open-source extensions on every browser I touch

Most browsers out of the box are… fine. But with the right extensions, you can turn them into something more powerful and personal. Honestly, there are a lot of great add-ons out there, but I like to stick to as few as possible. All of these are all open-source, and more importantly, they solve real problems I deal with every single day. They help me read better, browse safer, stay organized, and waste less time fighting annoying design choices on the web. And the best part about these is that they are available on almost every popular browser out there. Hypothesis Turn any webpage into your notebook Screenshot by Pankil Shah — No attribution required My work involves reading a lot of articles throughout the day, and most of them are not light reads. Hypothesis lets me highlight text on any webpage and add notes directly on top of it. By default, all these notes stay private, but there is an option to share them publicly with others and start a discussion. This is great …
