Melissa’s weight loss journey
The actress has impressively lost 95 pounds over a few years and has been candid about her journey.
She has remained disciplined about her workout routine, which she is committed to five days a week and it includes strength training and cardio. She also switches it up by adding in tennis and piloxing.
During her time on the Gilmore Girls‘ set, Melissa ate far below her maintenance calories, in an effort to lose weight, which left her feeling “starved and crazy half the time,” per People.
She learned through the fad diets, that slow and steady truly wins the race and that a weight loss journey should be comfortable, not extreme.
What Melissa taught her children about body positivity
After learning from her ups and downs with weight, the star emphasized to her daughters just how important having body positivity is, regardless of your size.
She shared with Redbook: “Give me your best punch in the face, and I’ll take that punch, rather than have my kid feel bad about herself. There’s an epidemic in our country of girls and women feeling bad about themselves based on what .5% of the human race looks like.”
The actress continued: “It starts very young. My message is that as long as everybody’s healthy, enjoy and embrace whatever body type you have.”
She teaches her children that self-esteem comes from the inside-out, and she focuses on confidence having nothing to do with looks.
Melissa shared in an Instagram post: “Reflections in this mirror may be distorted by socially constructed ideas of beauty.”
She added: “We have to stop categorizing and judging women based on their bodies. We are teaching young girls to strive for unattainable perfection instead of feeling healthy and happy in their own skin.”
