GM’s electric future depends on a new battery — and this facility

Hidden among the architectural landmarks of General Motors’ sprawling Warren Tech Center outside Detroit is a new cornerstone of the automaker’s $900 million bet on its electric future. The nondescript 500,000-square-foot pair of off-white boxes, which house GM’s new Battery Cell Development Center, might not look like much. But locked inside is the key to GM’s plan to slash the cost of its EVs by nearly 10%.  At a time when some car companies are pulling back on EVs, GM’s new Battery Cell Development Center is part of a reboot. And it’s one that GM told TechCrunch will allow it to bring a new slate of lower-cost batteries to market a year faster than planned. Nine protesters were arrested Thursday. The governor, a Democrat, announced that the state would establish a protected peaceful protest zone outside the facility, citing safety concerns following the protests in Minneapolis earlier this year where two American citizens were killed by federal agents. “For days, we’ve heard reports of unsafe, inhumane and unconstitutional conditions there,” Sherrill said at a news conference. “We’ve seen increasing violence, arrest and pepper spray at Delaney Hall, as well as public threats from the Trump administration, and we’ve seen the risk to public safety rising outside …

Kenyan court suspends US Ebola quarantine facility plan | Ebola News

A Kenyan court has suspended a plan to establish an Ebola quarantine facility for United States nationals exposed to the virus following a backlash from health workers and rights activists. High Court Judge Patricia Nyaundi on Friday ordered a halt to the agreement on the facility, pending a ruling in a legal challenge brought by activists. The case should be heard next week. An outbreak centred on the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and crossing into Uganda has killed more than 200 people. As countries seek to avert the spread internationally, the US struck a deal to isolate and monitor potentially exposed citizens in Kenya rather than transport them directly home for treatment. The Katiba Institute, a Kenyan rights group, said in a petition challenging the planned facility, which was due to start operating on Friday, that it was being established in secrecy and unilaterally and that it “raises grave constitutional …

SpaceX files plan for $55 billion Terafab chip facility in Texas

May 6 : Elon Musk’s SpaceX has proposed an initial investment of $55 billion to build a semiconductor manufacturing facility, called Terafab, in Texas, according to a filing made public on Wednesday. The facility, a joint project with Tesla, comes as Musk seeks to secure in-house access to advanced chips, though analysts say the scale of capacity he has outlined would likely require far greater investment. SpaceX is also targeting a June IPO that could value the company at around $1.75 trillion. Musk has been tightening integration of AI efforts across his companies, with SpaceX acquiring his startup xAI earlier this year in a deal focused on building space-based data centers for artificial intelligence processing. The combined entity was valued at $1.25 trillion. The Terafab project would involve a multi-phase chip fabrication and advanced computing complex aimed at boosting domestic semiconductor production in the United States. SpaceX estimates total investment could rise to $119 billion if additional phases are completed. The facility is planned in Grimes County within a newly designated reinvestment zone, where local …
