Walmart has been making its way onto my timeline a lot lately for its fashion offerings, so I decided to see if the clothes actually live up to the hype. To give some context, I’m 24 years old and a recent grad paying New York City rent. Most, if not all, of my clothes are from Depop, Poshmark, or eBay. I occasionally buy newly made clothes, but I never saw Walmart as a fashion destination that I would consider for my fall wardrobe. To my surprise, the retailer has a large fashion portfolio, including exclusive brands like Scoop, Free Assembly, Scenario, Joyspun, Avia and Athletic Works, along with collaborations and collections from brands like Madden NYC, Levi’s, Hanes and Reebok. I’m someone who genuinely loves shopping for clothes, but I’m also always looking for pieces that feel stylish and well-made but don’t cost a small fortune. A silver-haired stranger in an expensive suit knocks on a house in Springfield, Nebraska, and the seventeen-year-old who answers the door is holding an ice cream bucket, because she has spent the afternoon in an emergency room arguing with a cashew. That is page one of Trust Fall by Lynn Painter, and it is fair warning about the three hundred and seventy-one that follow: the machinery is going to be enormous, and the girl operating it is going to be funny about it. What Trust Fall Inherits The housekeeping first, because the catalogue is confusing. This is a standalone. Painter’s shelf does contain a genuine pair, so the instinct to treat any new title as the second half of something is reasonable, and wrong here. Nothing in the text, the copyright page or the also-by list ties it to another book. Start cold. What it does inherit is a frame. Painter is running Edith Wharton deliberately. The Age of Innocence is named, costumed and danced at, and she borrows Wharton’s actual subject rather than her …

NEW YORK (AP) — Cancer stick. Coffin nail. Cowboy killer. Those are nicknames, through the decades, for the cigarette — the once-glamorous desideratum of American society that has been tied to tens of millions of U.S. deaths. The cigarette is not an invention of the United States. And while Marlboro is a top-selling international brand, more than 100 countries make cigarettes. The largest manufacturer is in China. But U.S. ingenuity drastically altered the global tobacco industry. And American culture embraced it in the 20th century, making it — for a time — a symbol of stylish adulthood in U.S. movies and media, and omnipresent in bars, restaurants, airplanes and even hospitals. Smoking became “a right of passage for many young people,” and by the 1950s nearly half of U.S. adults smoked, says K.
