BAFTA Announces Student Award Finalists

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced on Monday the 15 finalists for the 2026 BAFTA Student Awards, chosen by BAFTA members from more than 600 submissions from universities worldwide across the film, games, and immersive categories. This year’s selections spans seven countries and features first-time representation from four schools — the University of Edinburgh, Beijing Film Academy, Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya and Institut National Supérieur des Arts du Spectacle et des Techniques de Diffusion — and is predominantly female, with women accounting for 21 of the 31 listed students. The BAFTA Student Awards, an integral part of BAFTA North America’s year-round Learning, Inclusion and Talent programs, are an international celebration of the next generation of creative talent in film, games and immersive storytelling, inspiring the future of cinema, television and interactive media. American Idol finalist’s mom says daughter was ‘robbed’ of victory

Richardson, a 29-year-old gospel singer from Pensacola, Florida, competed on season 24 of the hit singing competition series. Throughout her time on the show, she consistently impressed the judging panel, made up of Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan. Despite her best efforts, she was eliminated in the nationwide vote during Monday’s finale. Shortly after the results were announced, Richardson’s mother, Katja, expressed her disapproval on Facebook. “My baby was robbed,” she wrote, per Entertainment Weekly. “She did not fail. She was robbed. I’m sorry. Nancy Silverton to receive James Beard lifetime achievement award; plus 9 local finalists

The James Beard Foundation Awards — some of the country’s most prestigious accolades in the dining and beverage industries — just announced the 2026 finalists, with nine of them in the Los Angeles area. This year’s awards will also recognize two L.A.-based aid organizations and the recipient of the lifetime achievement award, L.A. chef, restaurateur and cookbook author Nancy Silverton. The James Beard Foundation said in its announcement that “Silverton has mentored countless chefs, bakers and restaurateurs who have since defined their own culinary identities and meaningfully contributed to the independent restaurant ecosystem.” Silverton joins the ranks of past awardees including Ruth Reichl, Wolfgang Puck, Toni Tipton-Martin, Madhur Jaffrey and Martin Yan, among others. In January the foundation released the year’s semifinalists, which included two dozen individuals, restaurants and bars in the L.A. region.
