China trade beats forecasts in April despite Middle East war

China trade beats forecasts in April despite Middle East war

The talks previously set for late March were delayed by the war in the Middle East, which has sent global energy prices soaring as shipping through the vital Strait of Hormuz has effectively come to a halt. The world’s second-largest economy produced a record-breaking trade surplus last year at US$1.2 trillion. For Trump, imbalance in the countries’ trade relationship has long been a major sticking point. SUPERPOWER SUMMIT Ahead of the key meeting, China’s exports to the United States grew 11.3 per cent year-on-year in April, GAC data showed Saturday, returning to growth after dropping sharply by 26.5 per cent in March. Shipments to the United States had also dropped 11 per cent in January and February combined. Trade is set to be a prominent topic in the upcoming meeting between Xi and Trump, with both leaders eyeing key concessions for their massive economies. Beijing has set an official target growth range for this year of 4.5 to 5 per cent – the lowest in decades. Early indications suggest the country’s economy is on pace, …

April 29 : KLA Corp forecast quarterly revenue above estimates on Thursday, banking on strong demand for its chipmaking tools as semiconductor manufacturers ramp up production of high-end processors for artificial intelligence. However, shares of the Milpitas, California-based company fell nearly 9 per cent in extended trading, with some analysts saying the market had expected a higher guidance. As of Wednesday’s close, KLA’s shares had gained about 50 per cent this year, as rising demand for processors powering large language models and AI applications fueled spending on chipmaking equipment made by companies such as KLA Corp.   The company expects fourth-quarter revenue of $3.58 billion, plus or minus $200 million, compared with analysts’ average estimate of $3.54 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. It also forecast an adjusted profit of $9.87 per share for the period, plus or minus $1.00. Analysts expect a profit of $9.80 per share. “June-quarter guidance was only near expectations and reflected some memory-related margin pressure, and investors are selling off anything less than massive beats in this environment given lofty …

Trainee teacher need to drop by 23% next year, DfE forecasts

Trainee teacher need to drop by 23% next year, DfE forecasts

The number of new trainee teachers needed to ensure a sufficient supply is expected to drop by almost a quarter next year, according to a new DfE forecast. The teacher workforce model (TWM) estimates how many teachers are required for primary and secondary schools. By considering how many teachers will leave or join the workforce, it also estimates the number of postgraduate initial teacher training (PGITT) trainees needed to ensure sufficient teacher numbers in future years. New data published today shows the DfE predicts 20,800 trainees will need to be recruited for state schools this September, a drop of 23 per cent (6,120) compared to 2025-26. The Department predicts 15,280 trainees will need to be recruited for secondary schools, down 21 per cent on last year, and 5,520 for primaries, down 28 per cent. The DfE said falling pupil rolls and better teacher retention rates were among reasons for the drop. Primary pupil numbers are “projected to fall more rapidly by 2027-28″, with secondary numbers also beginning to fall, said the DfE in notes published …

Nasa meteorologists trialling model to produce ultra local, short-term forecasts | UK weather

Nasa meteorologists trialling model to produce ultra local, short-term forecasts | UK weather

Meteorologists are working on ever longer-range predictions, but they have not neglected ultra local, ultra short-term forecasts for specific purposes. This month, meteorologists at Nasa’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia announced trials with a high-resolution weather model called US1k developed by Meteomatics. The developers claim that this model has a resolution nine times finer that other solutions, allowing planners to get a clear zoomed-in view of the launch conditions. It predicts weather on a 1km grid in 15-minute increments. The MetX interface is designed to convey crucial information clearly in stressful situations. Bad weather can be disastrous for rocket launches. The Chinese Long March 2E satellite launch broke up when it ran into high altitude winds in 1992. Apollo 12 was struck by lightning shortly after liftoff in 1969, severely damaging some instruments. Fortunately, the mission continued successfully. For Nasa, improved short-term forecasts may be a lifesaver. They may be equally important, though perhaps less serious, in other situations. Organisers of events such as Wimbledon are heavy users of ultra-local forecasts, even tracking individual clouds …

Russian weatherman forecasts ‘favourable’ conditions for nuclear attack on Farnborough | World | News

Russian weatherman forecasts ‘favourable’ conditions for nuclear attack on Farnborough | World | News

A Russian weatherman has issued an unhinged weather forecast, saying conditions are right for a nuclear strike on Britain and Europe. Meteorologist Yevgeny Tishkovets said today’s conditions were “favourable for the use of a full range of weapons”, including nuclear. He added that the direction of the wind would maximise the radiation across Europe. Tishkovets said: “By the way, the wind pattern today is favourable for the use of a full range of weapons, including even low-yield nuclear weapons. Because the wind in the lower troposphere is currently blowing strictly east-west. “From a height of one and a half to five kilometres [4,922ft to 16,404ft], east to west. “Any radiation, any clouds, and so on—everything associated with [a nuclear explosion]—will be blown in a clear, broad direction toward European countries.” The weatherman previously called for a missile strike on Farnborough, Hampshire, based on the weather conditions. The hit did immense damage to Putin’s military machine by knocking out a microelectronics plant supplying key components to multiple Russian missiles. He said: “After the bloody strike of …

Workday forecasts 2027 subscription revenue below estimates, shares fall

Workday forecasts 2027 subscription revenue below estimates, shares fall

Feb 24 : Workday on Tuesday forecast fiscal 2027 subscription revenue below Wall Street estimates, signaling slower new client wins as corporations scrutinize large software purchases amid economic uncertainty. Shares of the enterprise software maker fell more than 8 per cent in extended trading. Higher interest rates and a choppy macro backdrop have prompted companies to delay big-ticket technology decisions, weighing on new business for software vendors even as Workday pushes further into artificial intelligence. “Some net new large enterprise deals are taking longer to close,” Rob Enslin, Workday’s chief commercial officer said on a post-earnings call with analysts, citing federal, state and local government and higher education, healthcare and parts of the commercial market. While it impacted the number of new deals completed in the fourth quarter, “most opportunities remain active in our pipeline, and a few have already closed in the first quarter,” Enslin added. Workday forecast annual subscription revenue between $9.93 billion and $9.95 billion, missing analysts’ average expectations of $10 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. While Workday remains committed …

Uber forecasts profit below estimates on cheaper rides and higher taxes

Uber forecasts profit below estimates on cheaper rides and higher taxes

Feb 4 : Uber Technologies forecast first-quarter profit below expectations and fourth-quarter estimates on Wednesday, weighed down by higher taxes and an increase in more affordable ride options aimed to boost bookings. Shares fell more than 8 per cent in premarket trading after the ride-hailing company said it expects adjusted effective tax rate to be between 22 per cent and 25 per cent this year. “Our ETR reflects our business with operations across 70+ countries, which results in a tax profile comparable to large US multinationals with significant global operating presence,” Uber said. Trips rose 22 per cent in the fourth quarter, as more consumers opted for Uber’s affordable offers such as shared rides and other lower-cost mobility products. The ride-hailing company had said in November it was deliberately moderating the pace of margin growth after demonstrating over the past several years that its business model can generate profits at scale.  Uber had said investments in affordability and low-cost product offerings were partly responsible for accelerating mobility growth, even as they weighed on near-term margin …

Gartner forecasts downbeat annual results on slowing demand at consulting unit

Gartner forecasts downbeat annual results on slowing demand at consulting unit

Feb 3: IT research firm Gartner on Tuesday forecast annual revenue and earnings below Wall Street expectations, as enterprises scaling back their spending dampened demand for its consulting services. Shares of the Stamford, Connecticut-based firm were down 5.1 per cent in premarket trading following the results. Businesses have been tightening their spending budgets amid economic headwinds and choppy customer demand. Increased use of automation and in-house AI tools has also enabled many companies to handle more planning and performance assessments internally, creating additional uncertainty for external advisory providers such as Gartner. The company expects its total revenue to be $6.46 billion for 2026, below analysts’ average expectations of $6.71 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. It forecast annual adjusted earnings of $12.30 per share, below expectations of $13.53. Gartner also projected annual revenue of $5.19 billion at the insights unit, its biggest, below estimates of $5.3 billion. “Investors will likely be interested in the pace of 2026 CV (contract value) acceleration from here and the softer Insights Revenue guide could suggest that the pace …
