Nearly all new TVs and projectors have the ability to decode HDR, or high dynamic range, video. In most cases, HDR content looks better than non-HDR material, though an individual display’s ability to deal with the extra data can vary greatly. There are multiple HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision 2, HDR10, HDR10 Plus and HLG. Most displays can only decode one or two of these. Likewise, streaming services and 4K Blu-rays typically offer only one or two. Fortunately, all HDR displays can play HDR content — just not always in the best format available. Here’s what to keep in mind when shopping for a new TV or deciding which streaming service to use for a movie or show. The basics These images attempt to illustrate, on your standard dynamic range screen, what HDR can do on HDR displays. The top left shows how the image appears on an SDR display, tuned so the shadows are visible. Notice how the highlights in the clouds are “blown out,” meaning they lack detail. Nearly all modern TVs can decode and, to varying degrees of success, display high dynamic range content. The best TVs can make HDR shows, movies and even some videogames pop with color and contrast that non-HDR TVs could never accomplish. In addition to a TV that can display HDR, you also need HDR content. Most HDR content is available in multiple HDR formats and each format is slightly different. Confused yet? I hope not because even better, not every TV can decode every HDR format. Right now the two main formats are HDR10 and Dolby Vision. There’s also hybrid log gamma, or HLG and HDR10+. The good news is that every HDR TV can decode at least HDR10 which is available with most HDR shows, movies and some games. There are several differences between the different formats, so they’re worth discussing in detail. It’s been a long time coming but The Traitors Ireland is finally making its way to BBC One, and fans of the juicy and deceptive format are in for a treat. Hosted by comedy great Siobhán McSweeney, viewers will be transported to Slane Castle in County Meath, Ireland, as a group of strangers play the ultimate murder mystery game. Kicking off at 12:10am on Saturday 24th January, it has been teased that the players make a decision that ripples through the castle as the Traitors are chosen and the lies begin. But are the rumours of this series’ cutthroat nature true?
