Tides of Fortune by Lauryn Hamilton Murray

Tides of Fortune by Lauryn Hamilton Murray

Second books in a trilogy carry a strange burden. They have to build on a debut readers already loved, push the story somewhere new, and lay track for a finale, all without the shiny newness of a first outing. Tides of Fortune by Lauryn Hamilton Murray takes on that middle-book challenge and mostly comes out ahead, swapping the closed-arena tension of the trials for something looser and roomier: a quest across a wild, dangerous world, with a prickly alliance along for the ride. I have read a fair amount of YA fantasy shaped like this, and I want to be honest about both the pleasures and the growing pains here. So consider this your promise up front: nothing below gives away the turns that matter. Charting the Course Having survived the trials of the first book, Blaze is on the edge of becoming Queen of the Aquatori. She cannot rest on that, though. King Balen, the usurper who already holds one of the three enchanted Eyes, is hunting the Eye of the Soul, and its …

BBC’s “Fake or Fortune?” Attributes Painting to Artist Katherine Read

BBC’s “Fake or Fortune?” Attributes Painting to Artist Katherine Read

An episode of the BBC One documentary series Fake or Fortune? that aired on July 23 confirmed that a previously unattributed artwork was in fact painted by the 18th century Scottish artist Katherine Read. The painting belongs to Mary-Louise Wedderburn, a retired accountant who inherited it from her uncle 20 years ago. Wedderburn presented the gold-framed painting—a portrait of a young Indian woman with a languid expression, wearing several strands of pearl necklaces and a large emerald pendant—wrapped in a sleeping bag. According to the BBC, their research team wasn’t going in complete cold: Wedderburn had an inkling that it could be by Read, who was a distant relative. The painting is estimated to be worth approximately $130,000. Related Articles Read was born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1723. She traveled with a niece to India in the mid-1770s, and died en route back to England the following year. During the 18th century, she was well-known for oil and pastel portraits, often depicting women and children. According to a post by the McManus, a museum in …

Fake or Fortune sees discovery of 18th century portrait worth over £100K

A painting by famous 18th-century Scottish artist Katherine Read has been discovered and authenticated – and is thought to be worth more than £100,000. The portrait had been in the hands of retired accountant Mary-Louise Wedderburn, who was left the artwork in her uncle’s will and had always believed the piece may have been painted by her distant relative, Read, as was revealed in an episode of the BBC art programme Fake or Fortune tonight (Thursday, 23 July). Read was one of the most well-known portraitists of her time and specialised in portraying women and children. The portrait features an Indian woman in a formal pose, wearing a string of pearls, a large emerald pendant, and a nose ring. The episode of Fake or Fortune sees hosts Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould find authentic Read works to compare to the portrait of the Indian woman, looking through archives, speaking to experts and gathering letters and wills that could shed light on Read’s life in India. Mary-Louise Wedderburn’s portrait thought to have been painted by a …

Ryan Beatty on Writing ‘Sweet Fortune,’ Winning Grammys With Beyoncé, and Making Healing Music

Ryan Beatty hates this part. “In the past, I would really fight against this,” he tells me, “this” being an interview. “Putting out music is such a vulnerable thing,” the 30-year-old singer-songwriter explains. “I loved making it, but I sometimes dreaded putting it out. It opens you up to a lot of love, but also a lot of critique or questions, or things that you maybe don’t even want to acknowledge.” So Beatty doesn’t give a lot of interviews. In any case, he’s a busy guy who had a whirlwind few years: touring his critically acclaimed 2023 album, Calico, co-writing for artists like Bleachers, opening for Noah Kahan and Maggie Rogers. Oh, and there was the Grammy he shared in winning for co-writing four songs on Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter. And not just any Grammy—her album of the year. He likes to let the music speak for itself, he says, but he’s also gained a lot of confidence that sharing his music with the world means he can talk about it a little too. “Ultimately, I’m …

Cheryl’s son Bear set to inherit dad Liam Payne’s $29 million fortune following tragic death

Liam Payne’s estate will be awarded to his nine-year-old son, Bear Grey Payne, whom he shares with his former partner, Girls Aloud star Cheryl, as per court documents. The late One Direction member, who passed away after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, did not have a will at the time of his death, and as such his $29 million fortune will be handed down to Bear.   Liam’s attorney, Richard Mark Bray, is an administrator of his estate alongside Cheryl, and the money will be held in a trust until Bear turns 18, with some of it accessible now.  The singer welcomed Bear in 2017, a year into his romance with Cheryl. “I’m incredibly happy to welcome our new baby boy into the world, it’s a moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life and my favorite memory I have so far,” Liam wrote online at the time.  © InstagramCheryl’s son will inherit Liam’s estate “I’m completely in awe of his incredible mother, and how she has …

I bought a Steam Deck without spending a fortune, and you can too

I bought a Steam Deck without spending a fortune, and you can too

I’m a handheld gaming PC connoisseur — I currently own a Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go, and I’m already planning my next upgrade. It’s no secret that now isn’t the best time to buy into the PC gaming handheld market. The global RAM shortage is driving the cost of component pricing upwards, and those price hikes eventually hit consumers. Handhelds appear to be particularly vulnerable, as Lenovo’s base-model Legion Go 2 recently climbed 36% in price. The Steam Deck went out of stock due to market conditions, and now that it’s back, the handheld costs hundreds more than before. Frankly, I thought the Steam Deck LCD’s original prices were too high. The higher-capacity storage variants and the newer Steam Deck OLED models are even more expensive, and that was before the latest price hike. That’s why I bought a cheap, certified refurbished Steam Deck LCD with only 64GB of storage years ago, opting to upgrade the storage myself rather than pay Valve to do it for me. Now, I think buying …
