Jack Antonoff Lambasts AI Music Creators as ‘Godless Whores’

Jack Antonoff isn’t holding back on his thoughts on music makers who use artificial intelligence. The Bleachers frontman and music producer shared a lengthy letter (below) on his Instagram Wednesday, saying there’s “nothing more embarrassing than considering there is a way to optimize that holy process” of music creation. “What we do has become an ancient ritual,” he wrote. “You don’t have to write music, you don’t have to record it and you don’t have to bring out the band and play it. And yet for us, the idea of optimizing what we do is a complete miss of the entire point of what compels us in the first place. We (myself, the band and everyone I know, frankly) have never been looking for this work to become quicker or easier. We were never frustrated by the randomness and magic it takes. We do it for that exact reason — and without the process itself ::: nothingness.” The frequent Taylor Swift collaborator added that the “bad actors” in the industry will eventually “reveal themselves through …

Zurbarán review: Even the godless will be enraptured by this drama

Zurbarán review: Even the godless will be enraptured by this drama

Review at a glance Oh my. The first painting you encounter in the Zurbarán exhibition is an astonishing crucifixion. The stark white figure of Christ against a black background seems to give off light… or does the light strike it? Look closely at the feet: they’re filthy, for Christ has carried the cross barefoot. It’s pure theatre, but it is also a devotional work, inspiring pity and awe. Those two elements are everywhere in this marvellous exhibition — high drama and emotion. And beauty. Swivel round in this first room and you see another astonishing picture, a crucifix in a slanting downward motion, for this is a painting of St Peter, crucified upside down, with a kneeling friar looking at him, his hand raised in surprise or reverence. There’s nothing venerable about this Peter… he’s an old man, his mouth drawn back over his teeth, his skin reddened, and in the undignified position of being turned upside down for his last agony. Christ on the Cross with the Virgin, Mary Magdalene and Saint John, 1655 …

Philadelphia’s founding years were rife with conspiracy fears about ‘godless’ Freemasons and the Illuminati

Philadelphia’s founding years were rife with conspiracy fears about ‘godless’ Freemasons and the Illuminati

(The Conversation) — How conspiracies spread has changed immensely over the history of the United States, as technology and media have evolved. But the nature of conspiracies has not. I teach communications courses at Villanova University, 12 miles from Philadelphia, on how conspiracy theories are created and disseminated. As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026, I have been thinking about the early history of Philadelphia and the controversial people, stories and ideas, including conspiracies, that permeated the city during the second half of the 1700s. Conspiracy theories describe alternative versions of events – such as the collapse of the twin towers of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 – that contrast with the official, accepted versions of events. Conspiracies, however, involve small groups of people who act in secret for their own gain and against the common good. Examples of conspiracies include the Watergate scandal by President Richard Nixon and members of his administration, or the Tuskegee experiments in which U.S. public health professionals treated unsuspecting African Americans with …

Britain’s ‘godless’ university has become dogged by anti-Semitism

Britain’s ‘godless’ university has become dogged by anti-Semitism

In just a couple of months, University College London (UCL) will celebrate its 200th anniversary. Its controversial launch in February 1826 as a university outside Oxford and Cambridge, which would admit people of all religions, attracted fury from the likes of esteemed educator Thomas Arnold, who called it a “godless institution in Gower Street”. Founded by a diverse group, it has always claimed to value inclusion, and was the second British university to award degrees to women. One of its most contentious and pioneering concepts was not only to admit Jews but also to teach Hebrew and Jewish studies from the start. Now it is the second-largest university in the country, and Jewish students from the UK and around the world (55 per cent of the student body are not British) make up about 1 per cent of UCL’s student body (around 25 per cent of the students come from China and Hong Kong). The 200th anniversary should go down as a success story by almost every measure; UCL is now recognised as one of …
