Joyce Awards to Relaunch with $100,000 Unrestricted Artist Grants

The Chicago-based Joyce Foundation will relaunch its Joyce Awards, which have supported artists working in the Great Lakes region since 2004. The foundation will do so under a new funding model, having taken a year-long pause following its 2024 awards cycle. The awards will pivot from a project-based grant of $100,000 to an unrestricted grant of $100,000 that will go directly to each of the four selected artists. Accompanying the $100,000 unrestricted grant is a $40,000 grant that will go to a Great Lakes–based nonprofit organization, selected by a winning artist, that will help them “help realize, expand, or deepen their work in the region,” according to a release. Related Articles The Joyce Awards will also be administered in two cycles going forward, with artists based in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin eligible to win in even-numbered years, beginning in 2026, while artists based in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio eligible to win in odd-numbered years, beginning in 2027. Another change is that artists are now able to self-nominate for the 2026 cohort, beginning today, with the …

Federal judge grants injunction allowing clergy visits at Minneapolis ICE holding facility

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Clergy will be allowed to minister to immigrants in a holding facility at the headquarters of the Trump administration’s enforcement surge in Minnesota, a federal judge ruled Friday. U.S. District Judge Jerry Blackwell granted an injunction requested by Minnesota branches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the United Church of Christ, and a Catholic priest who had sued the Department of Homeland Security. Under his ruling, clergy will be allowed in-person pastoral visits to all detainees at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Minneapolis, the site of frequent protests over roughly the 3,000 federal officers who had surged into the state at the height of the crackdown. Blackwell said the plaintiffs had met their burden of proving that they’re likely to succeed when the case reaches a final conclusion, and that restrictions on the religious freedom of clergy to minister to detainees constitutes “irreparable harm.” He ordered both sides to meet within four business days to try to agree on details for how to provide access that takes …

Judge grants Minneapolis clergy access to detainees in ICE holding facility

(RNS) — A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to allow faith leaders inside a federal holding facility near Minneapolis after the clergy were denied access earlier this year while trying to provide religious support to immigrant detainees. U.S. District Judge Jerry Blackwell issued a preliminary injunction in support of clergy who sued the federal government, requiring the government to grant faith leaders immediate access to the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building — which houses local Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices — while the case proceeds. The judge also instructed the government and the plaintiffs to attempt to work out shared protocol over the next week or so to address specific questions, such as whether faith leaders will be allowed to physically touch detainees. Irina Vaynerman, cofounder of Groundwork Legal, one of the law firms representing the plaintiffs, told Religion News Service it was unusual for a judge to rule from the bench in such a case. “It speaks to the merits of the claims here, and also the urgency,” she …

A bust of Barbra Streisand and beautiful memories: Richard E Grant’s garden – in seven extraordinary items | Richard E Grant

Step into Richard E Grant’s garden in Richmond, London, and you’ll be met with a rather unconventional sight. Instead of the daffodils and tulips you’d usually find in an English garden at this time of year, Grant’s space is full of props and decorations from the films he’s starred in – from Saltburn to Carrie Cracknell’s 2022 adaptation of Persuasion. After any job, he says, “I go to the production department and try and buy or bribe my way” to get pieces to put in his garden. The space has, until now, been a private spot for Grant to entertain his actor friends. But now he has shared it with the world as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s new podcast, Roots. I took a look around it – here are some of the weird and wonderful things that can be found there. Saltburn’s proscenium arch The colourful proscenium arch from Saltburn. For Israel’s Netanyahu, Trump grants prayers — with caveats

JERUSALEM — For Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli right, President Donald Trump has been something close to a prophetic fulfillment. Through five years in the White House, Trump answered some of their biggest prayers. He moved the American Embassy to Jerusalem, recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights and ripped up the Iran nuclear deal. U.N. funding for Palestinian refugees was gutted. Jewish settlers in the West Bank, once condemned by Washington, are now getting their own U.S. passport office. Source link

33 historically Black churches receive $8.5 million in preservation grants

(RNS) — Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church are among 33 Black churches receiving millions of dollars for preservation of their sacred and historic buildings. They are recipients of the fourth annual round of grants from the Preserving Black Churches program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. The program, a $60 million initiative of Lilly Endowment, also announced $5 million in grants for five churches on Martin Luther King Day. It has supported 170 churches across the United States with a total of almost $34 million to provide funding and technical expertise to protect the assets and legacies of historically Black churches. The Birmingham church, which was bombed in 1963, will receive $300,000 for organizational and capacity building. Theodore (Ted) Debro, campaign chair for 16th Street Baptist Church, said the grant will allow the church to hire a director of development and fundraising for the building where four young Black girls were killed when members of the Ku Klux Klan set off …

China Grants UK and Canada Visa-Free Entry, Raising Total to 79 Countries

BEIJING (AP) — British and Canadian citizens can enter China without a visa starting Tuesday, bringing to 79 the number of countries granted visa-free access in a bid to boost tourism and business. China has expanded eligibility for the program significantly in the last two years. Visitors can stay for up to 30 days for business, tourism, exchange programs and to visit family and friends. Most Europeans qualify for visa-free entry, along with some from select countries in other regions including Latin America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Citizens of a few other countries, including the United States and Indonesia, can enter for 10 days if they are in transit — meaning they have a ticket departing for a different country than they arrived from. Business executives and tourists have welcomed the change, as the China visa application process can be a relatively cumbersome one. The U.K. and Canada are being added following visits to China last month by their prime ministers, Keir Starmer and Mark Carney. Both are relatively new leaders who are …
