FDA Grants Emergency Approval for Over-The-Counter Drug to Treat Screwworm in Pets

June 11 (Reuters) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday authorized the emergency use of a generic over-the-counter tablet to treat infestations caused by the New World screwworm in dogs and cats, ‌as the government steps ‌up efforts to contain the parasite. U.S. officials this month confirmed the first domestic cases of the parasite in more than six decades in cattle, a goat and a dog in Texas and New Mexico. New World screwworm is a fly whose larvae feed on living tissue, entering animals through open wounds and burrowing into the flesh.  The agency said nitenpyram tablets, a fast-acting treatment, can be used in pets weighing at least two pounds and at least four weeks old, adding that the drug is expected to help kill most larvae within hours of the first dose. Red Dwarf writer reveals Rob Grant’s wishes for beloved characters

Before his death earlier this year, Red Dwarf co-creator Rob Grant completed his final project: the spin-off novel Red Dwarf: Titan. Now, Grant’s co-author Andrew Marshall has opened up about his hopes for the beloved band of comedy characters as they return in the alternate reality novel – including a more fleshed out Dave Lister (who was played by Craig Charles in the TV series), and more developed female characters. “Rob wanted Lister to show a little bit more maturity by the end than we usually see, which I think makes an interesting part,” Marshall explained to Radio Times. “I was very interested in showing there’s a tiny speck of something in Rimmer that he might just be saveable.” He added that Grant “was very keen – as was I – to develop the female characters a little bit more”. “So Kochanski has a much, much bigger role in this, and there’s also a couple of other new female characters for you to have a look at,” he continued. Artists & Mothers Announces 2026 Recipients of Childcare Grants

New York City nonprofit Artists & Mothers has named the 2026 recipients of its eponymous $25,000 grant for artists who identify as mothers. The landmark program provides funding to cover nine months of childcare and is open to emerging and mid-career artists raising a child under the age of three. From photography and sculpture to collage and bookmaking, this year’s awardees span a wide range of artistic practices, conceptual concerns, and styles. Mimi Ọnụọha centers human and machine relationships, sometimes combining family photographs with video and images sourced from the internet. The 2025 single-channel video Ground Truths, for example, unearthed a buried history—literally, a mass grave—in Sugar Land, near the artist’s hometown, using a machine-learning model trained to identify similar sites across the state.  Related Articles Mimi Ọnụọha. Judge Rules Trump’s Cancelation of Humanities Grants Unconstitutional

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. Today’s stories include another literary L for the Trump administration, how we best absorb reading, and more. Judge Rules Trump Administration’s Cancellation of Humanities Grants Was Unconstitutional In the last couple of months, numerous cases filed against the Trump administration in the wake of gutting agencies and programs have seen rulings come down. We saw the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) come out on top in the case filed by 21 state attorneys general, and we saw the second case about the IMLS, filed by the American Library Association and American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, be settled out of court. Now, in more good news, a judge has ruled against the administration’s massive cuts of federal humanities grants that support the arts. This was over $100 million in support for writers, researchers, and scholars. The judge has barred the administration from ending those grants, while also criticizing its use of …

PFAS destruction and eVTOL projects win first ERS grants from University of Toledo

Projects selected for funding by the newly established Engineering Research Society (ERS) include research into PFAS destruction and using AI to advance aerodynamic modeling for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The University of Toledo College of Engineering has announced the first grant awards from its Engineering Research Society (ERS), marking a key step in enhancing the college’s research profile as part of UToledo’s designation as a Carnegie R1 research institution. ERS, a membership-based organisation co-led by alumni Don Warner (Class of ’76) and Deb Dauer (Class of ’81), was founded to support and advance research within the College of Engineering. Since its inaugural meeting, which brought together founding members, faculty, alumni, and supporters, the society has collectively raised $800,000 toward its initial $1 million endowment goal. “These projects exemplify the quality, relevance and interdisciplinary strength of our faculty research, and they reflect the very purpose of ERS: providing timely seed support to catalyze major external funding and broader impact,” said Mohammad Elahinia, dean of the College of Engineering and an ERS member. “I …

Judge grants protective orders to Taylor Frankie Paul and Dakota Mortensen

In a hearing about competing protective order filings from reality TV star Taylor Frankie Paul and her ex-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen, a Utah judge granted Thursday that both orders go into effect, though he delayed making a decision on a custody arrangement. The orders, which were issued by third district court commissioner Russell Minas, are in place for three years and require Paul and Mortensen to stay at least 100 feet away from each other. He also warned that they both could be subjected to criminal charges if there’s a violation of the orders. “I do think it’s important that there be mutual orders,” Minas said. “I am just concerned that if I don’t order both of them to stay away from each other, there’s going to be some additional problems.” Addressing Paul and Mortensen, Minas said: “I’m hoping that you’re not people who just thrive on the drama and the conflict … I do want to work with both of you to try to restore some sense of normalcy. I just think right now, you …
