‘Birthright’ Is Like Group Therapy for Jewish Americans at Odds Over Israel and Gaza

‘Birthright’ Is Like Group Therapy for Jewish Americans at Odds Over Israel and Gaza

On a recent Thursday evening in July, the line outside Manhattan’s MCC Theater looked like someone had mixed a bubbe convention with a Camp Ramah reunion. This largely Jewish crowd, old and young, had come on a religious pilgrimage of sorts to the far west side to see Birthright, Jonathan Spector’s new play about a group of six friends who met on an all-expenses-paid trip to Israel in 2006. Over more than three hours, Birthright explores the vicissitudes of their relationships with one another, their shared region, and the Jewish state itself. During the first intermission, in an audience spotted with yarmulkes, tattoos, and Chanel bags, I heard a 20-something asking her friend, “Did I tell you my latest jihad has to do with the Cardi B tickets I bought?” A few feet away, two 50-something women were bemoaning how young people just don’t understand what “the state of Israel meant to an older generation.” They’re right. Today, Jews under the age of 25 might be more likely to see a play called Birthright than …

RTL Group Boss Clement Schwebig on the Future of European TV

RTL Group Boss Clement Schwebig on the Future of European TV

Get big or die trying has become the strategy of Europe’s traditional broadcasters. Merger mania is everywhere. Last month, Comcast‘s Sky signed a $2.13 billion (£1.6 billion) deal to acquire British commercial broadcast giant ITV. Last year, MediaForEurope (MFE), the TV group controlled by the Berlusconi family, took majority control of German commercial network ProSiebenSat.1, adding to its pan-European conglomerate that includes Mediaset, Italy’s largest broadcaster, and Spain’s top commercial network Telecinco. The reasoning behind this consolidation is simple. European TV companies, seeing a decline in traditional advertising and fierce competition from streaming companies and online video giants like YouTube, have realized scale matters. If they are not to be wiped out completely, legacy broadcasters need to shift their business online — to digital ad and streaming subscription models — while staying big enough to still be profitable. RTL Group, Europe’s largest television company, is also playing the merger game. In June, RTL, which owns production giant Fremantle and is itself a subsidiary of German media conglomerate Bertelsmann, closed its acquisition of Comcast’s German pay-TV …

WhatsApp Gets a Handy @all Feature for Group Chats

WhatsApp Gets a Handy @all Feature for Group Chats

The group chat is the last truly heavyweight institution of modern life. It’s one of the most reliable means of daily communication, used for just about anything from planning to catching up. WhatsApp is counting over 3 billion users, and it’s a fair bet most of them are in at least one group chat; the platform has supported groups of up to 1,024 members since 2022. An update that began rolling out on August 4 follows a run of group-focused releases earlier this year, including group message history, member tags, and event reminders. Taken together, it’s a clear signal of WhatsApp’s reliance on group chats as one of its defining features. The platform’s latest update is designed to improve its usage, and it’s rolling out gradually. Here’s everything you need to know. @all Typing @all allows every member of the group to be notified, even the ones who muted the chat years ago. @all is designed to punch through and override the mute settings and notification preferences you set at chat level. Can AI Learn to Scaffold Group Work Like a Teacher Does?

Can AI Learn to Scaffold Group Work Like a Teacher Does?

Co-authored by Kodie Curran, Hannah Feeney, Jessica Murphy, and Michael Hogan. Collaborative learning has been shown to promote greater academic achievement, more positive attitudes towards learning, and increased persistence in the classroom (Springer, 1999). However, orchestrating collaborative learning effectively remains a significant challenge for teachers (Dillenbourg, 2013). It’s easier to lecture one group of silent students than to open Pandora’s box of collaborative learning. We all recognize the scenario: The teacher strives to give equal attention to each group working together in the classroom – yet one group struggles to move past the first task; another can’t agree on a shared focus; and another relies on a single student to carry the group’s workload. As the deadline approaches to present their results, the students are stressed, and the teacher is fatigued. These disruptions to collaborative learning — cognitive, socio-emotional, and participation challenges — are precisely what CollaBot, designed by Hu et al. (2025), was built to mitigate. When conversational agents were first introduced to this process as a helping hand for teachers and students, they …

A Science Education Group Tackles the Fauci Hearing and Diary

A Science Education Group Tackles the Fauci Hearing and Diary

American Council for Science and Health has been examining science claims in media since 1978, striving for a middle-of-the-road stance. So it is naturally interesting to hear what contributors have to say about the Fauci revelations. Readers will recall that Kentucky Senator Rand Paul questioned Covid czar Anthony Fauci in the U.S. Senate last month about his thousands of pages of documents covering the Covid years (his “diary”) that appear to tell a different story from the one covered in media. In the hearing, Fauci repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment (against self-incrimination) to avoid answering questions. That puzzled many because he was preemptively pardoned by former President Joe Biden. Note: In the meantime, in addition to the original, approximately 1100-page document trove, a 3200-page one has been found. Here it is, but it may take a looong time to download. So what do ACSH spokespeople make of all this? Pain and addiction medicine specialist Lynn Webster offers, Lynn Webster On July 29, Americans did not witness a serious examination of how the COVID-19 pandemic began. …
