This Is the Most Expensive G-Shock Ever Made

Over those eight years of development, Casio realized that constructing the case out of multiple pieces of sapphire crystal, each grown from ingots over several months, helped it absord shocks more capably. The technique is similar to one used in traditional Japanese timber construction, where cannily designed interlocking parts mean that virtually no screws or glue are needed to hold everything together. But for those of us who don’t quite have the money of G-Shock’s many red-carpet-walking fans, Casio is also releasing additional G-Shocks that go a bit subtler on the sapphire. There’s the MRG-B5000SA-2, limited to 500 pieces at $6,600, with two elongated sapphires set into the top and bottom of the bezel; and the non-limited GMW-B5000SB-1A2 at $770, with four small rounded sapphires in the bezel. It’s a bit more of an IYKYK look, sure, but it still means you’re getting a G-Shock decked out in gems. Someone get 2000s-era Nigo and Pharrell on the phone, because these would look right at home with some Evisu jeans and Bapestas. Or strapped to your …

Casio’s Crystal G-Shock Is the Most Expensive Ever Made

The G-Shock development team responsible for the new collection tells WIRED the fundamental challenge was building a “near-unbreakable” watch using an inherently brittle material. Making watch cases from sapphire is not new in the high-end watch world, and many distinguished makers, including Richard Mille and Hublot, have released pieces made of the crystal. To make the sapphire case work for a G-Shock, however, Casio had to develop a brand-new, dedicated shock-resistant structure, with the Multi-Guard construction using virtually invisible seams, alongside a completely screwless assembly method to hit the required shock performance. To do this, the outer case assembly required the development of completely new, dedicated jigs and fixtures, a process apparently so demanding that only one person at Yamagata Casio (the primary “mother factory” for Casio) can currently perform it. All three new watches, along with the proper G-Shock resistance to knocks and drops, are water-resistant to 200 meters, solar-powered, and feature radio-controlled timekeeping, world time, stopwatch, countdown timer, five daily alarms, and a full-auto LED backlight. If the $80K G-Shock is too steep …

Casio ‘CasioNaut’ G-Shock GMC-2500 GAC-2500 Series: Price, Specs, Availability

The high-end watch world has an understandable affection for Casio. You can easily rock an iconic, brightly colored F-91W in any meeting with a luxury brand, and you’ll get nods of approval. It is, after all, the watch that has graced the wrists of Barack Obama and Napoleon Dynamite. If not the F-91W, you’d be on similar safe ground sporting the famous “CasiOak” that many G-Shock fans love because of its more than passing resemblance to Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak, which was recently given a similarly affordable makeover by Swatch with the Royal Pop. First introduced in 2019, the wallet-friendly G-Shock GA-2100 earned the nickname largely because of its octagonal case shape, and it is considered by some the definition of attainable luxury. Now, however, it appears Casio has something genuinely new for the G-Shock line. Leaked on Notebookcheck and Instagram, the upcoming GMC-2500 and GAC-2500 series echo the CasiOak’s links to high-end brand AP with more than a passing resemblance to Patek Philippe’s Nautilus thanks to prominent shoulders on either side of the case. …
