Longtime Halo fans have only ever known two studios to develop the Halo franchise: Bungie and 343 Industries, which was later renamed Halo Studios. Microsoft has now thrown a curveball by entrusting the next iteration of the iconic FPS to Activision.  On Tuesday, a statement titled Continuing Our Reset was sent to global Team Xbox employees, announcing a larger restructuring that included eliminating 268 roles from Halo Studios, other “first party” studios, and XGS management and central functions. The statement said it will create a dedicated, separate team to develop the next Halo game, distinct from its Call of Duty operations, and that a smaller team at Halo Studios will remain focused on supporting the current community and existing games. This 25th-anniversary remake of Xbox’s most iconic shooter comes loaded with symbolism. When the original Halo: Combat Evolved released on Xbox in 2001, it truly was an evolution, making the first-person shooter genre more viable on consoles than ever, along with new graphics tech such as pixel shaders, not to mention the incredible multiplayer. It truly felt like a generational leap. Halo: Campaign Evolved is essentially a relatively simple remake; a graphical overhaul, and similarly to Metal Gear Solid Delta, the shiny new lick of paint highlights that the original game is a quarter of a century old and not enough has been done to freshen up the experience, and so whilst it is not bad, it feels at odds with itself. Clearly, a lot of love and care has been poured into it, with a great reverence for the original, but perhaps a little too much.
