Federal Judge Says New Hampshire Must Make It Easier to Prove Citizenship When Registering to Vote

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A federal judge has said that New Hampshire must make voter registration easier by allowing applicants to attest to their U.S. citizenship if they don’t have the documents to prove it. The case was seen as the first major legal test of an election reform that has been pushed nationally by President Donald Trump and has gained favor among many Republicans, though U.S. District Court Judge Samantha Elliot said she was not deciding whether requiring proof of citizenship itself is constitutional. Her ruling late Thursday night on a narrower question of New Hampshire law was significant, however, because it underscored the potential perils of implementing strict requirements for voters to document their U.S. citizenship so they can cast a ballot. Elliot found that changes in 2024 to the state voter registration law unconstitutionally removed one method of proof — namely, a voter’s sworn affidavit attesting to citizenship. “The evidence shows that this is the only method of proof available to a significant number of New Hampshire voters,” she wrote. Dean DelleChiaie, 35, who was arrested Monday, allegedly conducted internet searches on his government work computer in late January for terms that drew the attention of the U.S. Secret Service, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. Those subjects included “how to get a gun into a federal facility, previous assassination attempts against the President, the percentage of the population that wants the President dead, and the phrase ‘I am going to kill Donald John Trump,” according to an affidavit filed to support the criminal complaint against the Nashau resident. Floor reportedly collapses at New Hampshire wedding venue | World | News

A mass casualty incident has been declared after a reported floor collapse at a wedding venue in Tamworth, New Hampshire, according to early reports. It is not yet clear how many people have been injured. Officials declared the major incident at the site at around 5pm local time. According to local reports, the venue in Philbrook Neighbourhood Road is thought to be part of The Preserve at Chocorua. A huge emergency service presence rushed into the area, with the Tamworth police department confirming the incident and asking people to avoid the area while they carry out their work. No reason as to what confirmed the collapses has yet to be given, with reports suggesting that the floor collapsed while 145 people were at the venue. Girl, 7, and woman die in crash in Hampshire | UK News

A seven-year-old girl and a 43-year-old woman have died in a crash in Hampshire. Emergency services were called just after 10am on Thursday following a single-vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway of the A3, police said. It was reported that a red Ford Fiesta had left the road. The incident happened just after Hindhead Tunnel. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the two people in the car, a 43-year-old woman and a seven-year-old girl, who were both from Portsmouth, died at the scene. The road was closed for several hours following the crash.
