Chess Legend Magnus Carlsen Lost to Upstart Hans Niemann—Then All Hell Broke Loose

Chess Legend Magnus Carlsen Lost to Upstart Hans Niemann—Then All Hell Broke Loose

Had Ootes been watching the pieces as the game had devolved? Had he understood what was happening on the board? Could he have inadvertently reacted to something he’d seen? Could he have given Hans information without meaning to, or even worse—could he have—could he have— It was a ridiculous thought. But still, it nagged at Magnus, and even before he’d thought it through he was suddenly walking toward Ootes. Magnus looked at the photographer, and then the camera. “If you take photos of a specific game, that is a massive tell.” It wasn’t an accusation, exactly, but Magnus’s frustration coming out in angry words. Information can be passed, even by accident. And Ootes—well, Ootes had a laptop, he had access to the internet—but even without the internet, he could have seen something, could have reacted, Hans could have noticed— Then Magnus turned and stormed back to his seat. He was still fuming, but there was nothing else to say. Staring at the swirling pieces, swallowing back the bitter taste rising in his chest—Magnus knew; it …

France Freezes Sale of M Hans Baldung Drawing With Export Ban

France Freezes Sale of $3M Hans Baldung Drawing With Export Ban

The French government has stepped in to stop the sale of a newly identified drawing by Hans Baldung, according to the Art Newspaper, throwing a last-minute wrench into what was shaping up to be a major Old Master auction in Paris. The small portrait, dated to 1517 and attributed to the German Renaissance artist, was slated to hit the block at French auction house Beaussant Lefèvre, carrying an estimate of $1.74 million to $3.5 million. Two days before the auction, France’s culture ministry declared it a national treasure, triggering a 30-month export ban and effectively pulling it off the market.  Related Articles That kind of intervention is rare but not unheard of in France, where the state can halt sales to give local institutions time to raise funds and keep important works in the country. In this case, the stakes are unusually high. Baldung drawings almost never come up for sale, and this one is being billed as the only surviving silverpoint portrait by the artist still in private hands.  The work itself is modest in size …

Han Han’s Pegasus 3 Climbs to $530M at China’s Box Office

Pegasus 3 kept its grip on the China box office this past weekend, adding $49.5 million (RMB 351.3 million) to push its cumulative haul to $529.6 million (RMB 3.76 billion), according to data from Artisan Gateway covering Feb. 27–March 1. The racing comedy’s healthy hold solidifies its status as the clear engine of the market so far this year — but the rest of the field is running on fumes relative to past Chinese New Year tentpoles.  Total weekend ticket sales came to just $107.9 million, and China’s cumulative 2026 box office now stands at $1.41 billion, a 55.9 percent decline compared to the same point in 2025. Last year, of course, animated juggernaut Ne Zha 2 was still deep in its historic run, on its way to a $2.2 billion finish that both set global records and single-handedly rescued China’s film sector from a deepening malaise.  Pegasus 3 is directed by Han Han, a high-school dropout who has become one of China’s most consistent cultural creators — against the odds. In the mid-2000s, while …
