Bashful King Charles receives the cutest compliment during Harlem outing on US state visit

You’re never too old or too royal for a compliment, as King Charles proved when a young child boldly told the King he was “so nice” during a visit to Harlem Grown, a New York initiative a local community organisation and after-school initiative tackling systemic health, education and wellbeing challenges faced by disadvantaged children and families the city.  It aims to transform abandoned urban lots into sustainable farms, a project which no doubt resonated with the green-fingered monarch. Rashid Johnson, the Artist Who Shot Jay-Z’s GQ Cover, Drew Inspiration From the Harlem Renaissance

Rashid Johnson, the Artist Who Shot Jay-Z’s GQ Cover, Drew Inspiration From the Harlem Renaissance

Jay-Z discovered the work of Chicago-born artist Rashid Johnson—whose paintings, installations, and photographs often represent Black intellectual life—about a decade ago, says Johnson, when the hip-hop mogul was assembling his personal art collection. The admiration was mutual. “Jay’s music, lyricism, and sophistication are very much in line with a lot of interesting and historically important Black thinkers,” says Johnson, who places Jay-Z in a lineage alongside Harold Cruse, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Michael Eric Dyson. Johnson’s own fascination with Black intellectualism began when he was a child, sparked by a copy of Cruse’s 1967 work The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual perched on his mother’s bookshelf. (The volume later appeared in the artist’s 2024 solo Guggenheim exhibition, Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers, a multidisciplinary showcase on Black consciousness.) The title alone sent his 10-year-old mind spiraling—as he told The New Yorker in 2024, “I remember thinking, What is this crisis, and what the hell am I expected to do about it?” For GQ’s April 2026 issue, Johnson turns his lens to an indelible …

‘Peyton Place,’ ‘Cotton Comes to Harlem’ Actor Was 83

Judy Pace, who portrayed strong-willed characters on the ABC series Peyton Place and The Young Lawyers and in the Ossie Davis-directed action film Cotton Comes to Harlem, has died. She was 83. Pace died Wednesday in her sleep in Marina del Rey while visiting relatives, family spokesperson Joseph Babineaux told The Hollywood Reporter. The Los Angeles native also portrayed an artist alongside Christopher Jones in the sex romp Three in the Attic (1968) and was a featured player opposite Ray Milland in the cult ecological horror thriller Frogs (1972). And in Brian’s Song, she played Linda Sayers, the wife of Chicago Bears great Gale Sayers (Billy Dee Williams). That landmark ABC telefilm, also starring James Caan, was seen by 55 million people — half of those in the U.S. who owned a TV at the time — when it aired on Nov. 30, 1971. Ahead of her time, Pace recurred as the complex, resilient Vickie Fletcher on 15 episodes of the fifth and final season (1968-69) of the ABC primetime soap Peyton Place, then co-starred …

A Muslim-owned thrift shop blends modest fashion, faith and sustainability

A Muslim-owned thrift shop blends modest fashion, faith and sustainability

NEW YORK (RNS) — Kadjahtou Balde has a hard time parting with some of the vintage gems that make it into her Harlem thrift shop — a silk skirt adorned with traditional Palestinian embroidery, a pink wool sweater and an embellished blazer in perfect condition. “Look at the level of detail on this abaya,” she said while unfurling a black dress handstitched with turquoise geometric designs, a type of garment often worn by Muslim women. “It’s so beautiful, I kind of wish I could keep it.”  Balde has long been an avid thrifter and sustainable fashion enthusiast. But even in a city with a bounty of vintage and thrift shops, she couldn’t always find pieces that fit her needs as a Muslim woman who dresses modestly — and fashionably. So when her father asked for help revamping his struggling Harlem gift shop last year, Balde knew a thrift store that celebrated modest fashion could become a much needed space. “My dad told me that he was tired,” Balde said. “I decided that I want to …

Studio Museum in Harlem Closes After Sprinkler Emergency

Studio Museum in Harlem Closes After Sprinkler Emergency

A “sprinkler emergency” forced the recently reopened Studio Museum in Harlem to evacuate visitors on Friday and close for the weekend. As reported by Hyperallergic, staff told visitors to leave as a ceiling near the gift shop leaked water. “We saw a large pool of water on the floor near the entrance, and saw the water flowing down in the store,” an unnamed visitor told Hyperallergic. A spokesperson for the Studio Museum—which reopened in November in a high-profile new home designed by David Adjaye’s architecture firm Adjaye Associates—said that a sprinkler was damaged during preparations for a weekend storm that dumped more than a foot of snow in some parts of Manhattan and sent temperatures plummeting into the 20s and teens. Related Articles “No artworks or galleries were affected,” the spokesperson told Hyperallergic, which included video showing water flowing onto gift-shop shelves that had been emptied. A “Weekend Closure” notice posted on the Studio Museum’s currently reads: “The Museum will be closed from Saturday, January 24 through Sunday, January 25. We look forward to welcoming …
