People Ask How I Stay Healthy At 80. Here’s What I Tell Them.

People Ask How I Stay Healthy At 80. Here’s What I Tell Them.

Things change when you turn 80. Health is involved, but not in the way we usually think of age and medical stuff. Instead, there is the moment – that magical instance when people you met three minutes ago think they now have a license to raise the most intimate questions. “So tell me,” they ask, “how do you account for such good health at your age?” This question includes various assumptions. It implies that I want to talk about health, that I wish to talk about my health, that I do not have a terminal condition that will result in a sudden collapse, and that I know something about health – maybe a special inside secret I might reveal to a stranger. These assumptions are tragically wrong, and here is what I want them to know: I have no interest in talking about health matters, especially when they involve me. Instead, I believe there is a zone of privacy that people should respect. Just because I’m 80 and older than 96% of the population does …

I’m a personal trainer who works with seniors, and these are the four moves I make everyone do for healthy knees

I’m a personal trainer who works with seniors, and these are the four moves I make everyone do for healthy knees

kKnee pain is common among my personal training clients over 65. Whether from arthritis, overuse or old injuries, I see firsthand how limiting and debilitating knee issues can be. To address this, there are four exercises that are mainstays for all my clients, no matter their age. These moves are effective because they strengthen the muscles that stabilize and support the lower body, which reduces the strain on knees during movement. Latest Videos FromFit&Well They’re not only beneficial for knee health, but they’re great for improving full-body stability and balance as well. How to do the four exercises for healthy knees All you need is an exercise mat and a moderately-heavy looped resistance band, like this set from Amazon. Depending on your current strength level, you may need a heavier or lighter resistance band. You may like Start by doing one to two sets of 10 reps for each exercise. After a few sessions, increase to two or three sets and 12-15 reps. Eventually, aim to do three sets of 15 reps with a brief …

‘I want my kids to see a healthy relationship’

‘I want my kids to see a healthy relationship’

When A Place In The Sun host Laura Hamilton gave birth to her son, the first thing she did was call her family…and the passport office.  “The midwives thought I was nuts,” she tells Ateh Jewel on this week’s HELLO! Second Act podcast. “But I went back to work when they were three weeks old and they traveled with me pretty much full time until they started school.” Laura’s son Rocco, who is now 12 years old, and his sister Thalia, 11, have been lucky enough to watch their mum present all over the world.  But the backlash Laura received over her decision to bring her children along for the ride shocked her.  “People would go, ‘oh it would be nice if she spent more time with her kids.’ “We should never be judged for the choices that we make. We just do what we think is right for us. That doesn’t mean it’s the right way, doesn’t mean it’s the wrong way. “I might be a Rocco and Tahlia’s mum, but I’m still Laura. …

How personalised behavioural interventions could transform healthy ageing

How personalised behavioural interventions could transform healthy ageing

The Northwell Roybal Center for Personalized Trials uses state-of-the-art behavioural theory and personalised approaches to improve the health of older adults Modifiable health behaviours account for nearly half of deaths in the United States, with the burden of modifiable chronic disease being especially significant among those aged 60 years or older. Despite the importance of modifying health behaviours to improve health and reduce mortality in older adults, large-scale, stable health behaviour change has been difficult to achieve. Well-designed behavioural interventions are critical to supporting consistent health behaviour change. The Edward R. Roybal Centers The goal of the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Aging (NIA) is to support innovative research that fosters the health and independence of older adults while studying the conditions that uniquely affect the most vulnerable among America’s ageing population. The Edward R. Roybal Centers for Translational Research in the Behavioural and Social Sciences of Aging are a NIA-supported consortium of 15 Centers created to help achieve this goal. The Roybal Centers conduct research to translate and integrate basic behavioural …

Japan Healthy Ageing Habits: How Japanese Centenarians Live Longer, Healthier Lives

Japan Healthy Ageing Habits: How Japanese Centenarians Live Longer, Healthier Lives

We’ve written before at HuffPost UK about “ikigai”, a phenomenon the Japanese government’s site describes as “that which brings value and joy to life: from people, such as one’s children or friends, to activities including work and hobbies”. Ikigai could help us to lead happier, healthier lives as we age. And think tank and charity The King’s Trust has suggested that the UK could stand to learn from another of the country’s policies – community gathering places, or CGPs. In a project run with the International Longevity Centre UK, they wrote, “In our roundtable, CGPs were pointed to as a key example of the kind of preventive, community-based initiatives that Japanese policymakers view as key to both tackling the health effects of ageing and preventing loneliness and social isolation. “Evidence suggests that CGPs have been reasonably successful in these aims.” Japan was chosen as an example because almost a third of its population is aged 65 or above. What are CGPs? CGPs “arrange community activities ranging from exercise classes to hobby groups, with the aim …

New light-based therapy targets gum disease without harming healthy bacteria

New light-based therapy targets gum disease without harming healthy bacteria

A new light-based treatment targets a major gum disease bacterium while leaving helpful mouth bacteria largely untouched. In lab tests and mice, the therapy killed the harmful bacterium, protected gum cells and reduced bone loss linked to periodontitis. The approach still needs human testing, and researchers must determine whether targeting one bacterium is enough to treat a disease involving many microbes. A quiet shift may be underway in how gum disease is treated. Researchers at Nagoya University have developed a new therapy that targets harmful bacteria while leaving helpful microbes intact, a balance that has long been difficult to achieve. Their findings, published in the Journal of Translational Medicine, point toward a more precise and less disruptive approach to oral health. A Disease Rooted In Imbalance Gum disease, known as periodontitis, does not begin with a single infection. It develops when the balance of bacteria in the mouth breaks down. Helpful microbes decline, while harmful ones take over. Among these harmful species, one stands out. Porphyromonas gingivalis plays a central role in driving inflammation. Scientists …

What your grip strength and balance really say about healthy aging

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Assessing hand grip strength, testing balance, or rising from the floor to a standing position are often highlighted as indicators of healthy aging and potential longevity. These physical assessments offer useful insights into an individual’s endurance and strength. They help gauge the likelihood of falls—a major contributor to mortality among older adults—and assist clinicians caring for aging individuals or patients recovering from injury. However, these physical challenges cannot predict the future. “A poor or declining result is a reason for a health professional to investigate why function is changing, rather than gauging how long someone will live,” said Auriel Willette, an expert on brain aging at Rutgers University. Understanding how mobility assessments function can help individuals properly interpret their physical results. Variations of the “sit-to-stand” assessment have gained significant attention. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention uses a 30-second …

It’s Low-Calorie and Packed With Protein. Is It Healthy?

It’s Low-Calorie and Packed With Protein. Is It Healthy?

Ice cream is one of life’s simplest and most enduring culinary pleasures. The first published recipe, which dates back to the 17th century, combined milk, water, sugar, and candied citron or pumpkin. By the early 20th century, companies were regularly adding stabilizers to their ice creams to prevent them from getting freezer burn and artificial dyes to give them appealing hues. But the core essence of ice cream—sweetened, frozen dairy—remained largely unchanged into the 21st century. Even Halo Top, the diet ice cream that surpassed Ben & Jerry’s as the nation’s best-selling in 2017, simply subbed in skim milk and artificial sweeteners to keep the calories down. Then came David. The protein-bar company has turned its attention to “frozen dessert,” which is, of course, more commonly known as ice cream, though the company can’t legally call their product that. Instead of being made with cream and milk, it comprises a “protein system,” a “structure system,” a “fat system,” and a “flavor system,” each of which is composed of ultra-processed ingredients such as whey protein isolate …
