A Lancashire man blew up his childhood home because he wrongly believed he had been cut out of his parents’ will. Darren Davies, 55, set fire to the £260,000 bungalow where he lived with his brother, Craig, in the village of Hambleton following the death of their mother and father just months apart. Neighbours heard a loud bang on the morning of 27 March 2024 as the property, in Carr Lane, erupted into flames and the roof collapsed. Davies emerged from the side of the house and told a passer-by: “My family want the house. If I can’t have it, no one can.” Davies was sentenced on Thursday at Preston Crown Court to four years and four months’ imprisonment. He had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered. The man charged with murdering former MP Ann Widdecombe is accused of hitting her 21 times with a hammer and taking her wallet, a court heard. Joshua Kerry, 28, is alleged to have arrived at the Reform UK spokeswoman’s remote bungalow in Haytor, Devon, shortly after midday on Wednesday 8 July. A doorbell camera captured the suspect’s red Vauxhall Corsa pulling up outside the property, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard. A camera positioned in the hallway showed the 78-year-old politician sitting down eating lunch in the kitchen before the defendant allegedly entered via the front door and asked her: “Don’t suppose you have bank cards and ID?” He is then alleged to have struck her 21 times on the head with the hammer before tipping her out of her chair and on to the floor. A man stabbed a teenager to death after getting into an argument with him at a food and wine store, a court has heard. Muhammed Cabdiqaadir, 25, is accused of murdering 19-year-old Rinneau Perrineau in Lavender Hill, south-west London, on October 21 of last year. The Old Bailey heard that Cabdiqaadir killed the teen after Mr Perrineau hit his car with a windbreaker following an altercation at Thirsty Camel Food and Wine shop. Prosecutor Brian O’Neill KC told jurors that the defendant had arrived at the store at around 3.05pm on the day of the incident. He said that Mr Perrineau entered at around 3.12pm and asked the shopkeeper if he could sell him an iPhone. The store worker then witnessed Cabdiqaadir, Mr Perrineau and a third man, named as Nijab Rage, arguing before leaving the premises at around 3.17pm. A toddler was subjected to a “campaign of violence” before allegedly being murdered by her mother and her boyfriend, a court has heard. Two-year-old Isabelle Welsh collapsed at her home in Thornaby, Teesside, on 13 September 2025 having suffered a “massive head injury”, jurors at Teesside Crown Court were told. She was taken to hospital but died in the early hours of 14 September. A post mortem examination found that Isabelle had suffered 21 broken bones in the weeks leading up to her death, while prosecutors said she had been sexually assaulted and was “covered in bruising, the result of forceful gripping”. Isabelle’s mother, Alexandra Walker, 25, and Harrison Simpson, 22, are both currently on trial. They deny murder, allowing the death of a child, sexual assault and child cruelty.
