King Charles’ unexpected hidden talent that left royal fans stunned

Musical carrots King Charles’ playing a classic tune His Majesty hosted a special community music reception at Windsor Castle that quickly caught the attention of royal watchers. The celebration was hosted by the King alongside the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to recognise the vital importance of community music. In a series of photos and videos from the evening, Charles was filmed playing a rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star on a carrot, crafted by the London Vegetable Orchestra.  If you are wondering how one plays a carrot, the orchestra hand-carves playable flutes and recorders out of fresh produce, which allowed the King to test out his woodwind skills to the room’s delight. One admirer penned: “If ever something was to bring a smile to my face EVER, it would be King Charles playing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star on a carrot with a band of veggie-instrument-playing musicians. Truly iconic!” “It’s good to see the King in good health and enjoying himself around his people,” another commented. Meanwhile, a third posted: “The King playing a carrot …

Emmerdale reveals hidden element to Sadie King’s return scene – did you spot it?

Emmerdale has included an Easter egg for fans in Sadie King’s explosive return scene as Patsy Kensit has rejoined the soap after two decades. Kensit’s villainous Sadie has landed back in the Dales via helicopter – to mirror her exit scene back in 2006 – following Jimmy King’s sad death in the marquee crash. Now the soap has revealed a hidden clue in Sadie’s comeback scene in the form of a QR code sticker on the helicopter door. Taking to Twitter/X, the ITV soap has brought the QR code to the attention of fans who were too captivated by Sadie’s arrival to notice. “Did anyone scan?” Emmerdale asked in a post, accompanying the caption with a side-eye emoji for good measure. As it turns out, the QR code leads fans directly to the National Television Awards (NTAs) page to vote for Emmerdale at the UK’s big TV night. Meanwhile, viewers remain divided over Sadie’s shocking reappearance as she seems hellbent on making Nicola’s life miserable. In the aftermath of the deadly crash, Sadie has been …

The Hidden Pain of Adoptee Birthdays

The Hidden Pain of Adoptee Birthdays

For most people, birthday celebrations are filled with cake, candles, and being told, “We’re so happy you were born.” For people, who were adopted, at birth or through foster care, some enjoy celebrating birthdays, others dread them, and for many adoptees, birthdays can feel like an unspeakable loss. As one adoptee said: “When they told me to make a wish before blowing out my candles, I always wished secretly to meet my birth mother.” As a psychotherapist specializing in adoption and foster care, and as an adoptee myself, I understand that birthdays can carry a double meaning: a celebration of life and a reminder of loss. Both truths exist, and both are hard to carry at once. This day serves as a reminder of the separation from one’s birth family, an agony of grief that is real, hidden, and not always recognized, validated, or openly acknowledged by society. Adoptees often keep this loss locked in an internal vault, leaving many holding a vessel of grief that has no clear place to go. For adoptees, a …

Tracking the fatal Tesla Autopilot and FSD crashes hidden in its data

Tracking the fatal Tesla Autopilot and FSD crashes hidden in its data

Tesla reports its Autopilot and “Full Self-Driving” crashes to the federal government, as it’s required to — and then blacks out almost everything in those reports, so the public never learns what happened in those crashes. Tesla always end up blaming the driver. We’re matching those redacted reports, one by one, to real fatal crashes that were covered in the news as ordinary accidents. This is a running investigation, and we’ll add each crash we confirm to this page. You can view this as an investigative hub keeping track of our ongoing investigation. What the data shows Under a 2021 NHTSA Standing General Order (SGO), automakers must report crashes where a Level 2 driver-assist system was engaged within 30 seconds of impact and someone was hurt, killed, or a vehicle was towed. Tesla accounts for roughly 85% of the entire industry’s reports — nearly 4,000 crashes — and the count climbs every year. Tesla ADAS crashes reported to NHTSA, by incident month. TechCrunch Mobility: The hidden human cost of robotaxis

Welcome back to TechCrunch Mobility, your hub for the future of transportation and now, more than ever, the role AI is playing in it. To get this in your inbox, sign up here for free — just click TechCrunch Mobility! Proponents of autonomous vehicle technology have long argued that robotaxis and other self-driving vehicles will reduce crash incidents and make roads safer. And there is some evidence of that. But that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been a cost to those who are working (or have worked) for the companies developing that tech.  Sean O’Kane, senior reporter, special projects, dug into data submitted to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and found that test drivers for Waymo and Zoox sustained more than two dozen injuries in 2024 and 2025 from hard braking or other sudden movements made by the autonomous vehicles. In some cases, these workers were sidelined for months after sustaining injuries like whiplash when the AVs stopped abruptly, and hard. Check out his full story, which includes interviews with former and current workers.  There is …

New ‘Google-like’ search engine can scan millions of cells for hidden RNA clues in seconds

New ‘Google-like’ search engine can scan millions of cells for hidden RNA clues in seconds

Malva can search RNA sequences across millions of individual cells in seconds without requiring researchers to download enormous datasets or use a reference genome. The platform has indexed more than 140 terabytes of public single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data, allowing searches for mutations, RNA isoforms, pathogens and other sequences often missed by conventional cell atlases. Researchers say the system could help scientists investigate cancer, infections and other diseases while also giving AI systems direct access to experimental cellular evidence. The enormous databases created by modern biology contain clues about cancer cells, infections, genetic mutations and other processes involved in disease. Finding those clues, however, can require researchers to download and reprocess vast amounts of sequencing data spread across thousands of experiments. A new search platform called Malva is designed to make that process far faster. Instead of forcing scientists to retrieve enormous raw datasets and map them against a reference genome, Malva lets them search millions of individual cells directly using RNA sequence information. “Like Google did for the internet 30 years ago, Malva allows …

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Has a Hidden Technological Leap

Two mirrors, each small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, are set to change how we understand the cosmos. The launch window for NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is about to open. The telescope’s primary instrument is due to inform practically every area of astrophysics, but also tucked inside the telescope is a specialized coronagraph, an experimental apparatus that will attempt to directly capture starlight reflected off a planet’s surface for the first time. It’s an ambitious project that NASA hopes will pave the way for a space telescope that can one day provide a glimpse of an Earthlike planet orbiting a sunlike star. That’s a feat far beyond the power of current engineering—hence taking the basic technique for a spin on Roman. “We’ll test them in space for the first time, and we’ll understand what work still is left to go,” says Vanessa Bailey, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and instrument scientist for the coronagraph. At its core, a coronagraph is just a science-minded sunshade that can block …

New study reveals hidden risk of going sugar-free

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Cutting all sugar from your diet sounds like the healthy thing to do. But a recent study suggests it may do more harm than good. Instead of improving metabolic health, it appears to make it worse. Before rewriting your shopping list, though, it is important to note that this research was conducted on rodents, tracking an extremely small sample size of just six mice per group. Mice have fundamentally different digestive systems than humans. However, the findings offer a warning about the possible hidden dangers of extreme diets. This research offers a fresh way to look at health, moving far beyond the usual focus on calories and weight loss (Getty Images) This surprising conclusion falls squarely within the cultural obsession with “clean eating”. That’s no coincidence: decades of data link eating too much sugar to the global rise in diseases such …
