The other day, I grated two enormous zucchini into a bowl containing a quarter-can of pumpkin, brown sugar, cocoa powder and enough chopped bittersweet chocolate to make the whole operation look suspiciously like brownie batter. Which, essentially, it was. The zucchini disappeared almost immediately, leaving behind only a few green flecks and the vague knowledge that somewhere beneath all that chocolate was a respectable amount of produce.  In Chicago, we have a phrase for what happens to a hot dog after it has been loaded with tomatoes, onions, peppers and pickle: it’s been “dragged through the garden.” I had, apparently, dragged my brownies through the garden. When I sent the recipe to a friend, she replied, “I wish I could say I was making these for my toddler to hide his vegetables. But I’m making these for me to hide my vegetables!” This struck me as both very funny and strangely revealing. In sustainable fashion, breathless promises about vegan leather have arrived thick and fast for over a decade. Innovations promise mushroom and cactus alternatives that look and feel like real leather – minus the negative associations with methane, deforestation, chemical pollution and animal welfare. While these next-gen materials have absorbed billions of dollars in capital under an environmental banner, experts are concerned they remain a shiny distraction while the fashion industry’s emissions and reliance on fossil fuel-derived materials grows. “Apple leather, orange leather, pineapple leather, fruit salad leather. It’s like, seriously do we really have to call it leather?” the founder of Nature Matters, Dr Helen Crowley, says. A Colombian judge has ordered President Abelardo de la Espriella to hide social media videos that appeared to show him walking among the bodies of alleged criminals, according to a court document accessed by AFP on Wednesday. De la Espriella, who took office last month, has declared war on Colombia’s myriad drug trafficking guerrilla groups, with his policy backed by US military support. The Colombian military has since carried out three bombing raids that killed at least 42 people, including six minors, in the Amazon region and on the border with Venezuela. De la Espriella was criticised after posting several graphic videos on the presidency’s official Instagram account this month, where he was seen walking among bodies in white plastic bags. A court in Bogota accepted a petition from a Green Party lawmaker who requested the removal of the videos from social media. (RNS) — On Aug. 29, the chief of the Hindu nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Mohan Bhagwat, headlined the stage at Madison Square Garden for an event billed as a “Universal Oneness Celebration.”  The RSS was founded in India in 1925 with the mission of creating a Hindu nation. Since then, the organization has promoted a militant form of Hindu nationalism that ties Hinduness to Indian identity.  Bhagwat’s tour stop in New York exposed the RSS’s public relations attempt to present itself and its Hindu nationalist ideology in a way that would impress donors and followers in the Indian diaspora and also be palatable for Western (especially interfaith) audiences. Now a growing number of American political leaders and civil society groups are distancing themselves from the movement Bhagwat leads and rejecting the cynical and hypocritical instrumentalization of interfaith collaboration he attempted. Before the event, a broad coalition argued that the RSS did not deserve the benefit of the doubt, given the organization’s record on violence against minorities. The Princess of Wales is always perfectly poised at royal events, the epitome of grace and composure. But there was a time when her composure momentarily slipped at a charity event – and resulted in one of our favourite videos of the future queen. The event took place back in December 2014, when Kate was still the Duchess of Cambridge. She and Prince William travelled for a three-day official visit to the United States, centered primarily in New York City. One of her engagements saw Kate visit the Northside Center for Child Development where she joined a group of women to help wrap Christmas presents for underprivileged children. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve missed a few notifications for package deliveries, some Slack pings, and a doorbell notification on my Pixel 9. Tracking this down, I found out that while turning off Adaptive Battery is one way to make sure you don’t miss any notifications, Samsung has moved and renamed the setting, making it even harder to find. The background on Adaptive Battery Keeping your battery life high Adaptive Battery is still a clearly labeled toggle on Pixel phones, where Google’s own support documentation admits it “may reduce performance and delay notifications.” On my Galaxy Z Fold 8, running One UI 9, the same idea exists, but Samsung has folded it into “Sleeping apps” under Background usage limits, with no setting actually called Adaptive Battery to find. I tracked down both, turned them off on my Pixel 9 and my Z Fold 8 (both running Android 17), and looked to see if it worked. We’re in the summer of buzz cuts. Erling Haaland lopped off his Viking-esque locks. Even Dan Stevens is hopping in on the trend (with an equally, ahem, buzzy blonde dye job). JWST images reveal that mysterious “little red dots” are surrounded by extremely compact galaxies containing roughly a billion solar masses in stars. The faint host galaxies contribute only about 10% to 20% of the redder light, suggesting a brilliant central source, potentially a growing supermassive black hole, dominates. The findings suggest black holes may have gained much of their mass before their host galaxies finished building their stars in the early universe. The “little red dots” scattered across the distant universe have become one of the James Webb Space Telescope’s most stubborn mysteries. They look tiny, intensely red and unusually bright, yet astronomers have struggled to determine what produces their light. A closer look now suggests many of these objects sit inside extremely compact galaxies containing roughly a billion solar masses in stars. Their brilliant centers may be young supermassive black holes that grew rapidly before their host galaxies finished building most of their stars. The findings, published in Nature Astronomy, come from an analysis led by Yiyang Zhang of Wuhan University. The team examined …

If you buy the new Pixel 11 Pro, you might have to proactively tell people that you bought the latest phone, unless they are following each and every launch. The main reason is that the Pixel 11 doesn’t look that different from prior models. The main updates to its aesthetics are its new colors, which are admittedly gorgeous, and the addition of a small glowing light on the back of the phone, which has limited use. The phone arrives with some new Gemini features, but I’m not sure if AI chops are attracting customers to buy new phones these days. In daily use, what you may notice is that the Pixel 11 Pro’s cameras are snappier, and there are more options for you to customize the way your photos look. Otherwise, the Pixel 11 Pro XL feels like the previous-gen phone had a big Pixel Drop update. I have used the Obsidian Pixel 11 Pro XL for nearly a week, and so far, I can say that despite the relatively iterative updates, the phone is …
