EuroHPC Joint Undertaking launches six new quantum calls 

Superconducting Platform Technologies Through this call, HORIZON-JU-EUROHPC-2026-SPT-10, the EuroHPC JU aims to advance Europe’s superconducting quantum computing capabilities by developing a QPU with at least 1,000individually addressable physical qubits based on chiplet technology facilitating long coherence times, fast read-outs, and error correction capabilities. The system should be  cloud accessible for researchers and industry users, with a focus on demonstrating practical applications for businesses. The selected proposal will need to build a full-stack quantum computing system including hardware, cooling infrastructure, control electronics, and comprehensive software. The action will also support the creation of European supply chains for quantum technology components. The total budget for this call is EUR 20 million, with projects expected to run for 3.5 years. Lanarkshire AI Growth Zone wins £300m investment

Lanarkshire is set to become a major hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure after its AI Growth Zone secured a £300m investment package and Dell Technologies confirmed plans to establish a new Scottish base in the area. The developments are expected to strengthen the region’s position in the UK’s expanding AI economy. Investment will support the expansion of DataVita’s DV1 data centre operations, including the development of a second facility alongside the existing DV1 site. At the same time, Dell Technologies will relocate its Scottish team to Mercury House at Lanarkshire’s AI Innovation Park, bringing further technology expertise and employment to the area. Together, the developments are expected to support more than 3,400 jobs across construction, engineering, technology and AI, while creating new training and skills opportunities. The investment also aims to provide the digital infrastructure needed to attract further companies to Lanarkshire as demand for AI computing capacity grows. US commits $874m to strengthen semiconductor supply chain

The US Department of Commerce has announced plans to provide up to $874m in federal funding to seven technology companies under the CHIPS and Science Act, aiming to accelerate next-generation semiconductor research and strengthen the semiconductor supply chain. The proposed investments, announced through signed letters of intent, will support research and development across advanced computing technologies, including integrated photonics, AI memory, advanced packaging, semiconductor materials and secure electronics. The awards remain subject to due diligence and final government approval. Officials say the funding will help expand domestic innovation, reduce reliance on overseas technologies and reinforce the United States’ position in the global semiconductor supply chain while supporting future advances in AI, defence, healthcare, robotics and industrial manufacturing. The European Commission has opened a call for tenders to establish up to seven AI Gigafactories across Europe, marking a significant step in its ambition to strengthen the region’s AI capabilities and technological independence. The initiative, delivered through the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), is backed by up to €10bn in combined EU and national funding and is expected to attract at least €20bn in private investment. The new facilities will provide the large-scale computing infrastructure needed to develop next-generation AI models while supporting businesses, researchers and public organisations across Europe. Warwick researchers propose new route to scalable quantum information transfer

UK experts have pioneered Quantum Phononic Links, a new approach that could enable scalable long-distance quantum information transfer across future quantum computing chips. Researchers at the University of Warwick, working with the National Research Council (NRC) Canada, have unveiled a new concept that could overcome one of the biggest technical barriers to large-scale quantum computing: efficiently transferring quantum information between qubits across an entire semiconductor chip. Dr Maksym Myronov, Department of Physics, University of Warwick, explained: “One of the key challenges in quantum computing is long-range qubit connectivity. “Our work introduces a new concept in which phonons act as a quantum bus, enabling distant qubits to exchange quantum information while remaining fully compatible with semiconductor technology.” Published in APL Quantum, the team showcases Quantum Phononic Links (QPLs), a proposed communication method that uses sound-like vibrations, known as phonons, to transmit quantum information between qubits separated by long distances. European Processor Initiative: Project concluded

Following the conclusion of the project, the European Processor Initiative outlines its advancements in sovereign chip technology for supercomputing and artificial intelligence (AI) during a final review in Luxembourg. The European Processor Initiative, a project of 27 partners, funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland, concluded successfully four months ago, and has now undergone the final review in Luxembourg. After four years of the SGA2 project phase, the representatives of the partners presented their work to the reviewers and EuroHPC JU staff. In addition to the standard project review process, this one also had a special item on the schedule. The review was a special opportunity for the project consortium to showcase the results of their work – especially in the context of two processor families that were being developed – the Arm-based GPP brought up by SiPearl, and the European processor accelerator – EPAC – at the review. Procurement process launched for €12m EuroHPC quantum computer

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has launched the procurement process for a new EuroHPC quantum computer that will be hosted and operated by LuxProvide in Luxembourg. The system, known as MeluXina-Q, will be integrated with the existing MeluXina supercomputer to support advanced hybrid computing capabilities. The project follows a hosting agreement signed between EuroHPC JU and LuxProvide in December 2024. With a total acquisition budget of up to €11.95m, the initiative will be funded equally by the Digital Europe Programme through EuroHPC JU and the Luxembourg Government. Once operational, the EuroHPC quantum computer will expand Europe’s quantum computing infrastructure, providing researchers, businesses and public sector organisations with access to hybrid classical and quantum computing resources. The system is expected to accelerate scientific research and support innovation across multiple industries. Hybrid quantum and supercomputing capabilities MeluXina-Q will initially feature a quantum processing unit (QPU) equipped with at least 10 semiconductor spin qubits. The Genesis Mission aims to combine advanced AI, high-performance computing, and the expertise of leading researchers to increase scientific productivity. The selected projects will now move into the development phase, supported by specialised computing infrastructure and AI tools designed to speed up research and innovation.
