EastEnders airs homophobic attack on Ryder Hawkins with sickening twist

Ryder Hawkins (Felix Uff) has been cruelly attacked because of his sexuality – with a sickening EastEnders twist seeing the incident orchestrated by his own father Ned (Jamie Bamber). Last week, Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington) thought that Ryder could benefit from some downtime away from Ned. While they ate lunch at the box park, she noticed a notification from a gay dating app appear on his phone, and quickly locked the device so that he couldn’t see she’d discovered his secret. The following day, Ryder sat alone in the Square Gardens and glanced through his phone. Nicola approached and asked what his plans for the day were. He said that he had a date, and when asked whether it was with someone she knew, he asserted that his aunt had “never met her“. The comment took Nicola by surprise, and later that day she was stunned to see him with a girl, Alice, in the bar. What she didn’t realise was that Ryder had met this girl just moments earlier in the park, and that …

However, in a new interview with Variety, Davidson said the incident should be understood in the context of the tics he was experiencing throughout the event. “I would appreciate reports of the event explaining that I ticked perhaps 10 different offensive words on the night of the awards,” he said. “The n-word was one of these, and I completely understand its significance in history and in the modern world, but most …

In Putin’s Homophobic Russia, Watching ‘Heated Rivalry’ Is an Act of Rebellion and Hope

In Putin’s Homophobic Russia, Watching ‘Heated Rivalry’ Is an Act of Rebellion and Hope

In the past month or so, Heated Rivalry became a major global sensation. What you probably don’t know is that the show has enjoyed extraordinary success even in Russia—despite the fact that it is not officially available on any Russian streaming platform. On Kinopoisk, the Russian equivalent of Rotten Tomatoes, Heated Rivalry has a rating of 8.6; Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, listed as the two most popular series on the platform, both have ratings of 8.3. In other words, a self-selected group of Russian viewers think Heated Rivalry is the best show they’ve ever watched. It’s an unexpected turn, especially for a country widely known for its homophobia. But maybe it’s not so unexpected after all. I know Ilya Rozanov, the smoldering hockey player Connor Storrie plays on the series. In fact, I know quite a few people like him. I might even say that I have been him. Like the character, I was born toward the end of the Soviet Union, a time when homosexuality was still a criminal offense. My father …

DfE admits Catholic doctrine shared in RSE guidance is “homophobic”

The Department for Education has removed links to a statement of Catholic doctrine it says is “homophobic” from new guidance on relationships and sex education (RSE). The statement – ‘Letter to the bishops of the Catholic Church on the pastoral care of homosexual persons’ – was included as part of a reading list for a ‘model curriculum’ endorsed by the guidance, despite its description of homosexuality as “a more or less strong tendency ordered toward an intrinsic moral evil” and “an objective disorder”. The letter was included as a resource “for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of the Church’s teaching”. Following concerns raised by the National Secular Society, then-schools minister Catherine McKinnell agreed the letter’s contents were “concerning” and asked the Catholic Education Service (CES) to investigate the matter. Having edited the guidance to remove links to the document, the DfE told the NSS the “homophobic comments are not in the CES RSE model developed with the department” and that the document was added by the CES to the curriculum resource page “without …
