Sadiq Khan: ‘Londoners should be hoping West Ham stay up as £2.5m bill looms if Hammers are relegated’

Londoners should be cheering on West Ham over Tottenham as taxpayers face a £2.5m bill if the club is relegated, Sir Sadiq Khan has said. Sitting 18th in the Premier League table with just two games left, the Hammers are staring at relegation. Just one place above the drop zone in 17th, Spurs also remain in serious danger of falling into the Championship. The Mayor of London blamed his predecessor Boris Johnson for doing “the worst deal imaginable”, which will mean if West Ham remain in the bottom three at the end of the season City Hall will be hit with a huge bill. He told the Standard: “What I’d say to Londoners who don’t support Spurs is you should probably be cheering on West Ham.” “The previous Mayor, Boris Johnson, did the worst deal that can be imaginable,” he added. “As far as West Ham are concerned, as a deal of the century where he basically gave them rent free, this amazing stadium for 100 years. “Now if West Ham are relegated, we, the …

4 Uncomfortable Signs You’re Being ‘Quiet Fired’ And Your Boss Is Hoping You’ll Quit First

4 Uncomfortable Signs You’re Being ‘Quiet Fired’ And Your Boss Is Hoping You’ll Quit First

Some workplaces turn toxic as time goes on, and you may be faced with a difficult decision: Do you stay or do you go? Research has explored how a toxic workplace usually ruins employee engagement through a lack of support while causing negativity to spread, which leads to burnout and anxiety. When workers don’t feel supported, they will detach from their jobs. While some people may do all they can to get fired instead of quitting, sometimes managers will act in ways to force you into quitting, a move called “quiet firing.” They’ll purposefully create a hostile environment to make you leave the job of your own volition, so they don’t have to deal with the financial and legal fallout of actually firing you. A study suggested that quiet firing and quiet quitting are intertwined and act as a cycle of mutual frustration. It is difficult to determine which behavior starts first, as both feed into each other and stem from a breakdown in workplace trust — a dynamic that can create high costs for both …

The Heartbreak of Hoping for a Democratic Iran

This article was featured in the One Story to Read Today newsletter. Sign up for it here. Like Donald Trump, I, too, once underestimated the Islamic Republic of Iran. In the fall of 2004, as an underemployed freelance journalist drawn to heady stories about international politics, I had the bright idea of traveling to the notoriously closed country on a tourist visa. Press visas for Iran were hard to come by, and my travel was exploratory—I had no particular assignment. My profile was low, I figured. Who would care if, between the obligatory sightseeing expeditions, I rattled around Iranian cities meeting political analysts, philosophers, students, filmmakers, and the relatives of Iranian expats I knew? Its visa regime was deadly serious; so was the official paranoia about foreigners. American tourists were required to travel with a specially vetted guide. For four weeks, …

Apple Hoping to 3D-Print More Products

Apple Hoping to 3D-Print More Products

Apple is hoping to 3D-print aluminum device enclosures in the future, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. In today’s “Power On” newsletter, Gurman revealed that Apple is pushing to move to 3D-printed aluminum enclosures for for future devices. The MacBook Neo relies on a new aluminum manufacturing process that saves as much metal as possible to drive down costs and speed up production. 3D-printing aluminum enclosures would similarly enable Apple to save material and increase efficiency. The process is likely to come to the Apple Watch first, and potentially the iPhone at a later date. The process is a follow-up to Apple’s 3D-printed titanium technique, which debuted with the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Apple’s manufacturing design and operations departments are collaborating on the project. Gurman added suggested that Apple may expand its new “Neo” branding to the Apple Watch SE in the future, making it the “Apple Watch Neo.” Popular Stories First MacBook Neo Benchmarks Are In: Here’s How It Compares to the M1 MacBook Air Benchmarks for the new MacBook Neo surfaced today, and unsurprisingly, …

How immigrants hoping for a better life in Britain came to be viewed as ‘colonisers’ or ‘invaders’

How immigrants hoping for a better life in Britain came to be viewed as ‘colonisers’ or ‘invaders’

Discussions of migration in Britain often portray immigrants as “invaders”. This is evident in from the narrative around migrants arriving on small boats, to recent comments by Jim Ratcliffe, the billionaire co-owner of Manchester United. Ratcliffe, who relocated to the tax haven of Monaco in 2020, blamed immigrants for the country’s economic challenges and claimed the UK had been “colonised”. After a public backlash, he apologised “that his choice of language has offended some people”. A look at the history of immigration policy and rhetoric shows how this narrative came to play such a big role – and why it is so harmful. Britain’s history is intertwined with empire and colonialism. The UK was forged as a nation-state alongside, and partly to facilitate, the growth of a global empire sustained through violence, brutality and war. It also led to immigration from Britain’s current and former colonies. Although empire-related immigration began hundreds of years earlier, it accelerated after the second world war. Thousands of workers were recruited from the Caribbean and south Asia, as well as …

Meta Adding Facial Recognition to Its Smart Glasses That Identifies People in Real Time, Hoping the Public Is Too Distracted by Political Turmoil to Care

Michael Macor/The San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images When Meta announced it would strip its failed VR goggles division for parts, the bet was simple: funnel that money into sleek, AI-powered smart glasses instead. Emboldened by the product’s early success, the company is now working on rolling out a massive facial recognition feature across its entire smart glasses platform — a launch which involves timing the announcement with political drama to minimize scrutiny. According to new reporting by the New York Times, Meta could make the facial recognition features available to smart glasses owners as early as this year. Internally, the software goes by the designation “Name Tag.” Per the NYT‘s sources, it would let anyone who owns Meta’s smart glasses to identify people in the real world, instantly pulling up their information through Meta’s AI assistant. Since early 2025, NYT notes, Meta insiders have been hemming and hawing over how to roll out the feature, acknowledging significant “safety and privacy risks” associated with the feature. Disturbingly, documents viewed by the paper reportedly show the …
