Trump Directs Hundreds of Millions of Dollars to Support Coal Using Emergency Powers

By Timothy Gardner and Jarrett Renshaw WASHINGTON, June 4 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Thursday he is directing hundreds of millions of dollars to support U.S. coal power plants and to ship the carbon-intensive fuel to Asia, with most of the funding coming from Cold War-era emergency powers. Trump invoked the Defense Production Act, a 1950 ‌law granting presidents broad authority over ‌industries deemed critical to national security, to fund $425 million in upgrades to 13 coal-fired power plants and $75 million to support the proposed West Gateway coal export terminal in Oakland, California. His Energy Department also said it was finalizing up to $350 million in previously announced funding to help develop four coal facility projects, including new power plants in Alaska and West Virginia.  The Trump administration has framed energy policy as a national security issue to ensure electricity for AI data centers and reduce reliance on other countries. At an event in the Oval Office, Trump, flanked by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Republican governors Mark …

‘Cheap’ parking at Stansted airport cost me hundreds of pounds | Money

‘Cheap’ parking at Stansted airport cost me hundreds of pounds | Money

I have ended up hundreds of pounds out of pocket after paying £66 for a week’s parking at Stansted airport. I booked through the website compareairportparkings.co.uk for our car to be collected at the short-stay car park, parked off-site while we were away, and then returned to us at the short stay. On our arrival back in the UK, we were kept waiting for four hours before being told our car was ready for collection. It had evidently been in an accident, and I’ve since been quoted £4,000 for repairs to the smashed front. The short-stay car park had no record of the car ever having left, so I had a £477 parking ticket to pay on exit. Stansted staff reduced this to £250 when I explained. I later received a £100 charge notice from Stansted for breach of parking conditions. Compareairportparkings has refunded me the £66 booking fee and told me to take up the case with the operator, which is not responding to calls or emails. The police have said that it is …

Hundreds arrested in Paris after football revelry turns ugly – POLITICO

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said seven officers were injured in clashes across the country. He called the disorder “absolutely unacceptable.” Far-right leader Marine Le Pen wrote on X: “Only in France does a football club’s victory spark riots. Only in France does everyone feel compelled to lock themselves in their homes on the evening of a victory to avoid being confronted with violence,” she said. Valérie Pécresse, leader of the Île-de-France region, which includes Paris, called for sanctions against those causing violence. “The brainless thugs who think they can smash everything are tarnishing the image of Paris and France!” Pécresse wrote in a post on X. “We must be able to celebrate on victory nights peacefully in Paris and the Île-de-France region!” Similar riots took place in Paris last May after Paris Saint-Germain’s victory at the previous Champions League final, resulting in more than 500 arrests and two deaths and drawing widespread political condemnation. Paris Saint-Germain defeated Arsenal in a dramatic final in Budapest after a 4-3 shoot-out following a 1-1 draw after extra …

Hundreds of feral kids take over Nottingham estate – cops say they’ve crossed a line

Hundreds of feral kids take over Nottingham estate – cops say they’ve crossed a line

An exasperated worker has been forced to temporarily close his shop because of the “mad behaviour” of youths, who have hurled milk at strangers and set fires at a park. Drawn by social media and the hot, sunny weather, hundreds of teenagers have been descending on Southglade Park, in Bestwood, over the past week. On Wednesday, May 27, Nottinghamshire Police issued a 48-hour dispersal order for large parts of the estate, as well as Top Valley, which was then extended to Saturday morning. The force reported kids had been fighting, setting small fires, abusing shop staff, throwing stones, riding bikes in front of moving vehicles and intimidating people. Workers at Premier, a convenience store in Southglade Road, have been feeling the brunt of the problems. Shop assistant Suthan Maniam said he had witnessed crowds of up to 200 teenagers, aged between 13 and 17, gather at the park opposite the store. He said he believed most of the kids were coming from outside the area and had been drawn to the field by social media …
