A set of parents and their children in Illinois and California filed a lawsuit last week in federal court in Chicago alleging that Meta illegally used their Facebook and Instagram photos to build NameTag, an unreleased face-recognition system for its smart glasses, and to train generative AI models including Emu and Muse Image. The proposed class action alleges that Meta violated Illinois and California privacy laws by extracting biometric information from people’s photos without notice or consent. WIRED reported in June that code for NameTag had been secretly embedded in the Meta glasses AI companion app, which had been downloaded more than 50 million times. While the feature had not been enabled for users of the app, the analysis found that the system was designed to turn faces captured by the glasses into biometric signatures and compare them with so-called faceprints stored in a database on the user’s phone. Meta is expanding its shift away from professional fact-checking. The tech giant announced it’s trialling it’s crowdsourced “Community Notes” system across 16 countries in Latin America. Meta says the system will only fully roll out once it is confident it works, but critics warn that with misinformation, manipulated images and AI-generated content spreading rapidly, crowdsourced checks may come too late to prevent false claims from reaching millions. Vedika Bahl explains the risks. The list covers Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The move is part of Meta’s wider effort to replace its network of professional fact-checking partners with a system that puts more responsibility for identifying misleading content in the hands of its users. The company began recruiting contributors in the region on Wednesday. But during the initial testing phase, Community Notes will not be visible to the wider public. San Francisco’s city attorney has hit Meta with a cease-and-desist letter telling the company to stop “allowing” paid advertisements that include AI-generated child sexual abuse content and asked it to explain how the ads repeatedly ran on its platforms. On Tuesday, WIRED reported that Meta has run more than 350 ads in recent months that transformed still images of minors—some of them confirmed as real individuals, including a member of a European royal family—into short videoclips that can depict them performing sexual acts. When clicked, these ads would direct people to download AI image- and video-generation apps, some of which could be used to digitally undress people or create other nonconsensual intimate imagery. The ads, which were discovered by researchers at the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), included some identical ads that had been uploaded multiple times, and in total they reached more than 29,000 accounts in countries in the European Union. In June, the UK government told Big Tech it had three months to make taking, viewing, or sharing images of child nudity on their devices impossible. “I expect tech firms to make that happen,” said then prime minister Keir Starmer. “But if they choose not to, then we will act and change the law.” That deadline arrived on Tuesday, and the government says that the likes of Apple and Google have failed. As a result, they will be changing the law to introduce what the UK government claims will be world-first legislation of its kind. While engineers from Apple and Google had been working with the government since June to make changes, “they do not meet the scale of this crisis,” Lisa Nandy, the secretary of state for digital, culture, media, and sport, told lawmakers on Tuesday as she introduced the legislation. The ads pointed people towards almost 50 apps combined across Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Of the 350 ads, the researchers say that around 300 of them directed people to AI image or video generator ads, with most of these apps being linked to China-based developers. Some apps had already been removed by the time WIRED started reporting this story. Among those that would generate explicit imagery of adults were eight identical apps listed on Apple’s App Store, multiple of which were linked to Chinese developer names. When the apps opened, they would show explicit AI-generated content, including a menu of sexual scenarios, including one called “threatening knife” where a knife is held to a woman’s throat. Effective immediately — at least in theory — Instagram is requiring profiles of fake influencers to carry an “AI-generated profile” badge directly beneath the handle and display name in the account’s main bio header. In a blog post titled Bringing More Transparency to AI-Generated Profiles on Instagram, the Meta-owned social network said Monday that the goal is for viewers to know they’re seeing an AI-generated profile rather than a human one. Previously, some of these accounts carried an AI creator label, which could easily be mistaken for a human who uses AI to create content. An AI-generated profile label is also supposed to appear on the AI influencer’s individual Feed posts, Reels and Story overlays. Instagram said that AI profiles that don’t implement the label will have their accounts forcibly demoted, meaning posts would be restricted from being recommended to non-followers until the creator adds the label.
