In broadcasting terms, it was certainly that – a project of unprecedented scope and patience, exploring the lives of 14 people from disparate class backgrounds at seven-year intervals, from childhood up until the age of 70. For the bulk of its run, the “experiment” was steered by documentarian Michael Apted, a researcher on the original Seven Up! who directed every entry from 7 Plus Seven (1970) through to 63 Up (2019). Since Apted’s death in 2021, directorial duties have passed to Asif Kapadia, the Oscar-winning director of profile documentaries Amy and Senna. 70 Up, the final entry in the series, finds the surviving participants mostly retired, in a mode of hyperopic reminiscence. FIA hails ‘invaluable input’ from drivers ahead of F1 rules meeting

LONDON, April 19 : Formula One’s governing body has hailed drivers for their ‘invaluable’ input ahead of a teams meeting on Monday that will put forward proposed rule changes to improve racing. The sport has undergone the biggest change in decades on the chassis and engine with new power units that are split roughly 50-50 between electric and combustion power. Drivers have, however, complained about the impact on racing and raised safety concerns from having to ease off the throttle early and coast into high-speed corners so the combustion engine can recharge the battery. International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said on social media on Sunday that there had been “constructive and collaborative discussion” between the governing body and drivers ahead of the meeting with team principals and F1 stakeholders. “The drivers have provided invaluable input on adjustments which they feel should be made, particularly in the areas of energy management to ensure safe, fair and competitive racing.” Ben Sulayem said a series of meetings had also been held with technical representatives of teams …

The majority of wars are coalition wars, but some of the partners in these wars are barely seen or invisible. So it is with the current Iran war. Most of the Western commentary is focused on the United States and, inevitably, Donald Trump and his decision to pursue war—and indeed, it was his decision to launch it. But in the conduct of actual operations, the Israelis have been much closer to peers than minor partners. According to an Israeli air-force spokesperson, in the opening wave, some 200 Israeli jets hit more than 500 targets in the first day, quite apart from any attacks by drones or special-operations forces. U.S. Central Command has yet to release its number of strikes from the first day, but they will likely be on the same order of magnitude, although conducted from a wider variety of platforms, including from the sea. NASA’s budget is still an unfathomable mess. The government shutdown late last year once again delayed proceedings to determine the space agency’s future — but if it were up to the Trump administration, NASA’s science budget would be slashed in half, an “extinction-level” inflection point for US space exploration and science. If Congress were to have its druthers, on the other hand, NASA’s budget would largely remain unchanged, securing the future of dozens of important missions — both ongoing and planned — that the White House is looking to place on the chopping block. Trapped between the two, the fate of the space agency remains in the air. Congress passed a short-term resolution on November 12 that left the government until January 31 to ratify NASA’s budget. NASA’s recently sworn-in administrator and former SpaceX space tourist, Jared Isaacman, has yet to officially comment on the matter, though he’s made it clear that he’s aligned with the Trump administration’s tripling down on private industry-led space exploration.
