ITF Says Tennis Players From Belarus and Russia to Continue Playing as Neutrals Despite IOC Shift

LONDON (AP) — Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka and former men’s No. 1 Daniil Medvedev will continue to play under neutral status after the International Tennis Federation announced Friday that it will “not change its existing position” over suspensions for Belarus and Russia. “The International Tennis Federation confirms that the IOC’s announcement does not change its existing position regarding the Belarus and Russian Tennis Federations’ suspensions, which remain in place,” the ITF said. “The membership status of the Belarus Tennis Federation will be considered at the ITF Annual General Meeting in October by the ITF’s voting member nations,” the international federation added. Sabalenka, who is from Belarus, is a four-time Grand Slam winner. Medvedev, who is from Russia, won the U.S. Open in 2021 and is now ranked No. 9. Since the war began, tennis players from Belarus and Russia have had to play with their countries unnamed and without flags next to their names. Both countries have also been banned from the Davis Cup, Billie Jean King Cup and other ITF team competitions; and tennis events …

Fencing-Athletes and coaches lobby IOC as concerns rise over fencing federation

Fencing-Athletes and coaches lobby IOC as concerns rise over fencing federation

LONDON, May 5 : Almost 3,000 athletes and coaches were sending an open letter to IOC President Kirsty Coventry and the International Fencing Federation leadership on Tuesday calling for an independent review of what they call “governance failures and corruption” in the world body, says a copy of the letter seen by Reuters. The letter argues that fencing has been destabilised by turmoil at the top of the FIE with disputes over leadership, transparency and decision making. This includes the fallout around former president Alisher Usmanov’s return and complaints about opaque rule changes, event disruptions and weaker safeguards surrounding neutral athletes. “As athletes, we care deeply about the future of our sport,” says the letter. “The governance failures and corruption within International Fencing Federation are threatening the credibility and stability of the sport and must be formally addressed.” FIE interim president Abdelmoneim El Husseiny did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. The FIE has faced scrutiny since Russian-Uzbek billionaire Usmanov, who led the federation from 2008 until 2022, was re-elected president …

Transgender women banned from competing in Olympic games

Transgender women banned from competing in Olympic games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Thursday only “biological females” will be allowed to compete in women’s events, preventing transgender women from competing. The IOC is reintroducing testing for gender to determine eligibility to take part in women’s events from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics onwards. The move will also rule out many athletes with differences in sexual development (DSD). In a major shift of policy, the IOC is abandoning rules it brought in in 2021 which allowed individual federations to decide their own policy and is instead implementing a policy across all Olympic sports. “Eligibility for any female category event at the Olympic Games or any other IOC event, including individual and team sports, is now limited to biological females, determined on the basis of a one-time SRY gene screening,” the IOC said in a statement. Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more The International Olympics Committee is under fire over the sale of a T-shirt that features artwork from the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, which Adolf Hitler used to promote Nazi Germany. The Olympics’ official online shop has sold out of the controversial T-shirt, which replicates designs from the propaganda used 90 years ago: a man wearing a laurel crown, the Olympic rings and the Brandenburg Gate. Introduced as part of the Olympic Heritage Collection, the limited-edition shirt immediately sparked backlash for commemorating the dark time in Germany’s history. “History should be taught, not merchandised,” one X user wrote on social media. Another said: “Shocking sell-out—Olympics merch team really thought Nazi-era Berlin art was a good vibe? History lesson needed ASAP.” One person criticized on Reddit, …

IOC ‘begs’ defiant Ukrainian to race without war dead helmet

IOC ‘begs’ defiant Ukrainian to race without war dead helmet

MILAN/CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Feb 11 : The International Olympic Committee pleaded on Wednesday with skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych to compete without his banned helmet depicting Ukrainian athletes killed since Russia’s invasion and avoid potential disqualification. However, the 27-year-old again trained on Wednesday in his “helmet of remembrance” depicting 24 images of dead compatriots and indicated he would wear it for Thursday’s race day. Asked after his training run if it was the helmet or nothing, Heraskevych, who has an outside chance of finishing on the podium, told reporters: “yes”. “At this point, I would say that a medal is worthless in comparison to people’s lives, and I believe, also in comparison to the memory of these athletes,” he said, later telling Reuters his defiance remained unchanged despite the IOC’s appeal to him. The global Olympic body banned the helmet on Tuesday for any competition, saying it violated rules on political statements. That drew the ire of Ukrainian politicians. Athletes can freely express themselves in press conferences, social media and interviews during the Games but they cannot …

Ukrainian Trains in Helmet Honoring Fellow Athletes Killed in War. IOC Says It’s Banned for Race

Ukrainian Trains in Helmet Honoring Fellow Athletes Killed in War. IOC Says It’s Banned for Race

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych said Tuesday he still wants to compete at the Milan Cortina Games wearing a helmet that commemorates athletes from his country who were killed in the war with Russia, even though the International Olympic Committee said it cannot be used. The IOC offered Heraskevych a chance to compete while wearing a black armband instead, calling it a compromise. The IOC said the helmet — emblazoned with images of more than 20 athletes and coaches who have been killed since the Russian invasion in 2022 — violates Olympic rule on political statements. Heraskevych said he doesn’t plan to wear the armband. “We will continue to fight for the right to compete in this helmet,” Heraskevych said after his two training runs on Tuesday. “I truly believe that we didn’t violate any law and any rules.” He plans to wear the helmet again for the final training runs Wednesday in advance of Thursday’s start of the two-day, four-heat Olympic race. The IOC wrote to the Ukrainian Olympic …

IOC bans helmet honouring Ukraine’s war dead at Olympics, allows black armband

IOC bans helmet honouring Ukraine’s war dead at Olympics, allows black armband

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday said Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych could wear a black armband at the Winter Olympics instead of a banned helmet that features Ukrainians killed in the war with Russia. Spokesperson Mark Adams said the helmet contravened IOC guidelines about political symbols but said it would “make an exception to the guidelines to allow him to wear a black armband during competition to make that commemoration”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier defended the Olympian’s right to wear a helmet featuring athletes killed during the war with Russia, thanking him in a post on X. “I thank the flag bearer of our national team at the Winter Olympics, Vladyslav Heraskevych, for reminding the world of the price of our struggle,” Zelensky said on X. “This truth cannot be inconvenient, inappropriate or called a ‘political demonstration at a sporting event.’ It is a reminder to the entire world of what modern Russia is,” the president added.
