Trump Has a Deal to Build US Military Presence in Greenland While Leaving Island in Denmark’s Hands

Trump Has a Deal to Build US Military Presence in Greenland While Leaving Island in Denmark’s Hands

Trump in a social media post announcing the deal said the emerging agreement “gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns.” He added that with the agreement his administration would “immediately” begin the process of developing a larger military presence on the mineral-rich Danish territory. The deal came after officials from U.S., Greenland and Denmark quietly negotiated for months behind the scenes, searching for solutions to address some of Trump’s security concerns about a territory of roughly 56,000 residents. For Trump, the Greenland issue had largely been put on the back burner as he launched a military operation to oust former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power and joined with Israel to start a war against Iran. The office of Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said the deal will be signed by all three governments next week during the United Nations General Assembly, but parliamentary action is still needed by the Danish and Greenland governments before it can be enforced. Cuba’s Electrical Grid Collapses Again, Plunging Island Into Darkness

HAVANA, Sept 18 (Reuters) – Cuba’s electrical grid suffered a total collapse on Friday, plunging the nation into darkness and leaving millions without power amid a US pressure campaign that has largely blocked oil from reaching ‌the Caribbean’s largest island. Friday’s collapse ‌was triggered by a failure in high-voltage transmission lines in central Cuba that occurred around 2 p.m. local time, authorities said. “Protocols are now in place to begin the gradual restoration of the system,” said Felix Estrada, an official with Cuba’s National Electrical Union (UNE). Power had returned to a handful of scattered neighborhoods in Havana by late evening, primarily around hospitals, but much of the city remained completely dark under cloudy skies and rain. The nationwide blackout, the latest of at least six partial or total grid collapses since January, hardly registered in a country accustomed to long hours, or even days, without power. Many exhausted residents of the capital Havana were already without power when the blackout hit. “Yesterday I’d gone without power for 24 hours. They turned the lights on …

But after the gig was cancelled “due to freight delays from the East Coast affecting critical equipment for the show”, frontman Stuart Murdoch posted on Facebook on Thursday asking fans to gather in Langley Park near the venue. “Hi guys, Stuart here. Sorry about the news below,” he wrote, attaching a screenshot of a map with a cross drawn over a specific spot. iPhone 18 Pro Unboxing: New Colors, Better Photos, and Smaller Dynamic Island

The iPhone 18 Pro and ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max are launching tomorrow, but we were able to get one early to share some initial impressions. Both the 18 Pro and Pro Max are heavier than the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models they replace, and it’s most noticeable when you pick up the Pro Max. It was a heavy phone to begin with, and now there’s more weight (249 grams vs. 233 grams). If you hated last year’s two-tone design with the contrast between the aluminum frame and the glass back, there’s good news. Apple is now matching the glass to the frame for a more uniform look. Our review unit is Apple’s new glacier color, which is a light blue that’s slightly different from the other light blue shades Apple has used in the past. Unlike some of those blues, the glacier color actually looks blue and not silver. Apple is also offering the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ models in burgundy, silver, and black. We have a burgundy model on the way and will …

70-year-old hiker lost for nearly a week on remote Lake Superior island is rescued

The Coast Guard and Michigan police rescued a hiker who got lost and then had to survive for nearly a week in the woods of a remote Lake Superior island, authorities said Sunday. Craig Berg, 70, was found Saturday “injured and hypothermic” on Isle Royale National Park after he disappeared Sept. 5, the Coast Guard said in a statement. A team effort that included good Samaritan backpackers, Michigan State Police and K-9 units was instrumental in finding and rescuing him, the Coast Guard said. “We’re thankful that missing hiker, Craig Berg, was found alive and alert on Isle Royale,” state police Lt. Ben Eckola said in a statement. “The collaboration and hard work of everyone involved in the search helped locate Craig safely.” A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter based in Traverse City hoisted Berg up and took him to Marquette Regional Airport, where EMS then took him to a hospital. “This rescue is a testament to teamwork and what can be accomplished when first responders and members of the community come together,” said Senior …

About 500 evacuated as wildfire rages on Croatian island of Brac

ZAGREB: About 500 people have been evacuated on the Croatian Adriatic island of Brac as a wildfire raged on the popular tourist spot famous for its white sand beach. Authorities sounded the alarm shortly before midnight on Saturday (Sep 13) as flames threatened to get close to homes in the small town of Milna in the west of the island. Fanned by strong winds, the fire has consumed about 3,500ha (8,600 acres), an area roughly two-thirds the size of Manhattan, authorities said. Two people have been wounded, including one seriously, firefighters told the official Hina news agency. “The wind is still blowing but I think we have a good chance of controlling the fire by the end of the day,” firefighting chief Nikola Martinic Dragan was quoted as saying by Hina. Four Canadair water-bombing aircraft have been at work since the morning, while more than 220 firefighters backed by 69 vehicles have worked through the night to douse the blaze, the firefighters’ statement said. (AP Photo) STR/AP hide caption toggle caption STR/AP Yemen ‘s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels captured the island of Mayun at the entrance of the Red Sea, a key alternative for shipping Saudi oil and other exports since Iran has been targeting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The island’s seizure was confirmed by a senior military official with Yemen’s internationally recognized government and a Houthi official. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists. About 12% of the world’s goods are typically shipped through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern end of the Red Sea. It’s especially important to Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally. The Houthis’ military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, said in a statement Friday that “maritime navigation is safe for all companies except for Saudi vessels.” But markets are nervous, and experts have described the Houthis as highly unpredictable. A United Nations spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said Houthi rebels in Mokha seized …

15-year-old survives after fishing boat capsizes off Alaskan island, killing his brother and cousin

A 15-year-old boy survived days at sea after a fishing boat capsized off an Alaskan island, killing his older brother and cousin. The teen was rescued Monday after he was found on the overturned vessel about 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island, in the Bering Sea, the Coast Guard said in a news release. Darren Toolie-Noongwook said his family is mourning the death of his brother Sidney, who provided for the family, and “spoiling the hell” out of Parker, the teenage brother who survived. Video obtained by NBC affiliate KTUU of Anchorage showed the moment the teen was rescued. The boy, appearing to wear a black hoodie underneath a coat with green pants and black boots, is seen kneeling on the vessel. The group was on an 18-foot fishing vessel near the island when it capsized. The Coast Guard said it was notified of the overdue vessel Sunday night but was unable to begin searching until the next morning because of weather and poor visibility. The boat had last been seen Friday departing Savoonga. …
