Jewelry can be so personal. It’s the flecks of personality in an outfit, the layered notes of character that fill out your daily ensemble. Among the most memorable appearances was during a visit by the Prince and Princess of Wales to the Glade of Light, the memorial erected in tribute to the victims of the Manchester Arena terror attack. She wore the necklace once again in Manchester, and perhaps brought back memories to that poignant day. For her most recent outing, the princess paired the necklace with bee earrings—another tribute to the city of Manchester that she also wore to the Glade of Light memorial. On Thursday Catherine was on hand to meet staff and patients at The Christie, one of Europe’s leading cancer centers. The mother of three started her outing at the Oak Road Treatment Centre, where she met staff and patients currently undergoing chemotherapy. She also spoke to patients receiving complementary therapy and heard how it has assisted their physical and emotional well-being. Just about every corner of Julie Burton’s Silver Lake studio is filled with sparkling glass jewelry — some real, some symbolic — and whimsical ceramic figures inspired by Midcentury Modern design. Elegant hand-blown glass vases sit beside ceramic crater pots on warm cherry shelves. Bright teardrop earrings hang from metal tins filled with Japanese cooling beads. In the kitchen, hand-carved ceramic birds, whales, elephants and owls look out from the counters, surrounded by lidded cache pots and heavy candlestick holders that feel good in your hand. Earlier this week, a 5.5-carat diamond ring sold for over $17 million dollars during Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Zurich. The triangular-cut stone, known as Ocean Dream, thanks to its blue-green color, had an estimate of about $9-12 million. It is set into an 18-karat white gold band and surrounded by pink and white diamonds. Fortune magazine reported that the buyer was an unnamed private client and that the ring took 20 minute to sell. Max Fawcett, Global Head of Christie’s Jewellery, noted in a statement that this is the second time Ocean Dream has been offered at auction.
