After 15 years, Tim Cook has handed off the Apple CEO role to John Ternus, the company’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. As of Tuesday, Ternus now leads one of the world’s most valuable companies. But if you’re not a dedicated Apple enthusiast, you’ve probably never heard of this man, who has largely remained out of the spotlight until he was announced as Cook’s successor in April. Ternus is assuming the CEO role at a crucial time for Apple. Next week, the company will host its iPhone launch event, ushering in its newest line of hardware. Tim Cook shared an inside look at the work he is doing behind the scenes as he prepares to step down as Apple’s CEO next week. Cook has been preparing incoming CEO John Ternus for the transition over the last several months, and today he introduced Ternus to popular Pokémon character Pikachu. Cook said he and Ternus met with the Pokémon team to talk gaming. The accompanying video features Pikachu exploring the Apple Park campus, including dancing under the rainbow arch and picking an apple from the orchard. It’s not clear why the Pokémon team was at ‌Apple Park‌, but Cook first met Pikachu in September 2025 on a trip to Japan for the reopening of Apple Ginza in Tokyo. Apple reported a record quarter on Thursday. Yet outgoing CEO Tim Cook warned of some gathering storm clouds in the form of memory chip supply issues that could impact business in the near future. “Today Apple is proud to report our best March quarter ever, with revenue of $111.2 billion and double-digit growth across every geographic segment,” Cook said during Thursday’s earnings call. “iPhone achieved a March quarter revenue record, fueled by such extraordinary demand for the iPhone 17 lineup.” Less rosily, Cook relayed that Apple spent more on memory chips in March than in previous quarters, though the company’s costs were offset by its ability to sell stockpiled inventory. But, he warned, the expectation is “significantly higher memory costs” in June and beyond — the likes of which may “drive an increasing impact” on the business. Cook was referencing what has commonly been called “RAMageddon,” the trend of the AI industry guzzling up memory chips with such astonishing gusto it is spurring shortages. Apple has reportedly abandoned plans for a foldable “iPad Ultra” following years of disappointing sales performance for the iPad Pro. The claim predominantly comes from the Weibo leaker known as “Instant Digital,” who posted the remark in response to a question about whether the ‌iPad‌ would join a rumored “Ultra” series of Apple devices. After 15 years as Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook will be stepping down from the role in September.  On the latest episode of TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, Kirsten Korosec, Sean O’Kane, and I discussed Apple’s big announcement. This product, he’ll say, will put the full and awesome power of AI into everyone’s hands. It probably won’t represent a breakthrough in AI research, and it might not let people automate work or perform tasks any better than a lot of technically minded people are doing today. It may or may not involve a new device, though if it doesn’t, one should be in development. But if it all works out, that keynote will mark the moment when Apple did to AI what it has done for desktop computers, the internet, mobile technology, wearables, and music distribution. In an all-hands meeting with employees today, Apple’s future CEO John Ternus teased an “incredible road map ahead.” “I’m not exaggerating when I say this is the most exciting time to be building products and services at Apple in my entire career,” said Ternus.
