BBC viewers entranced by ‘life-changing’ period drama – but it’s about to leave iPlayer

Period dramas remain one of the most popular genres of films, and there have been plenty of spectacular ones over the years, including Ammonite, which was released in 2020. The film, which was set during the 1840s, follows palaeontologist Mary Anning, who discovered several intact fossils of marine animals including the plesiosaur, and geologist Charlotte Murchison, exploring an unconfirmed romantic relationship between the two ladies. The decision to depict a same-sex relationship between the two women, which had no historical basis, divided several, including Mary’s own family, with her descendants having differing views of how she was portrayed in the film. Despite the controversy, the film mostly won over fans and critics, with the film earning several nominations, including at the BAFTAs, the GLAAD Media Awards, the London Film Critics’ Circle and the Satellite Awards. It did, however, manage to win three awards at the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Women Film Critics Circle Awards. Rod Stewart and his wife of 18 years, Penny Lancaster, looked so loved-up they attended the premiere of Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision at Windsor Castle on Wednesday night.  The pair were there to support King Charles, the subject of the documentary, who arrived at the event with his wife, Queen Camilla. A host of A-listers like Kate Winslet, Benedict Cumberbatch and Stanley Tucci were also in attendance on the night.  Penny was glowing in a pink and brown floral gown with ruffles cascading down to the hemline. For her directorial debut, Kate Winslet made a star-studded family drama, in which she was one of the actors, over just seven weeks, securing star Helen Mirren for only 16 days. The schedule and Winslet’s dual roles were just some of the many challenges she faced helming Goodbye June. “We were constantly trying to make sure that we were all making our days. I never wanted to drop anything, and I didn’t. I was very proud of that,” Winslet recently told The Hollywood Reporter at a special screening of the Netflix movie in New York, speaking of the shortened filming schedule. “We had seven children in the film as well as all of our adult actors, so just the constant juggle of that and being in front of the camera as well as behind it, just the juggle of it all we had to adapt to very quickly.” Still, she “loved” the experience, she said, unprovoked, adding, when asked if she wants to direct again, “I really hope I do. It’s hard to believe it, but 2026 will mark 20 years since The Holiday premiered in December 2006 and cemented itself as a festive classic forevermore. The film took audiences along on Cameron Diaz’s dreamy Christmas in the Cotswolds and gave one of Jude Law’s most memorable to date – we are of course talking about Mr. Napkin Head.  The Holiday is stacked with starry names who are still all over Hollywood, from Kate Winslet to Jack Black.
