Protesters in Tirana were seen carrying Albanian flags and banners saying “Albania is not for sale” on Saturday as they marched toward the office of Prime Minister Edil Rama, calling for his resignation and reportedly chanting against the Socialist Party government. Further protests took place in the western city of Vlora on Sunday as demonstrations continued into their 22nd consecutive day. The primary focus of the demonstrations is a proposed multi-billion-euro tourism project on Albania’s Adriatic coast, a development supported by Kushner’s Affinity Partners. The protests have since fused with wider public anger over opaque real estate deals and alleged government corruption. This aerial photograph shows protestors gathering in front …

new video loaded: Albanians Protest Corruption and Kushner-Linked Resort transcript Back transcript Albanians Protest Corruption and Kushner-Linked Resort For more than three weeks, thousands of Albanians have been protesting a planned luxury hotel development on the Adriatic coast that is partially financed by President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. This prime minister should leave. And it’s not about any more flamingos. It’s about healthcare. It’s about education. It’s about people getting poorer and poorer every day. It’s about people leaving their country because they don’t want to live here. It started as a protest because of the investment that’s happening in Sazan and Narta Lagoon from Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. It started because of that, but that was only the tip of the iceberg. Now we’re protesting for our rights and for a new Albania. It is about a private property. It is not about a land that is public. And the Albanian government is giving by selling out the country. For more than three weeks, thousands of Albanians have been protesting a planned luxury …

Albania’s Rama Vows to Push on With Kushner-Linked Luxury Resort Despite Protests

TIRANA, June 8 (Reuters) – Albania will plough on with a luxury resort planned by Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner on a remote stretch of Balkan coast despite persistent protests over its environmental impact, Prime Minister Edi Rama told Reuters on Monday. Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the capital Tirana and on the southern coast where the resort has been proposed, calling for the project to be scrapped because ‌of the impact on a protected wetland home ‌to flamingoes, seals and sea turtle nesting sites. The flamingo has emerged as the movement’s symbol: protesters hoist inflatable pink birds and signs saying “Flamingo Revolution”.  Rama is unmoved, telling Reuters that the developers will “stun” onlookers with their plans in the coming months and that parts of the resort could be open to the public before the end of the decade.  “I’m telling you, it’s going to be a beautiful project and we’re going to do it and we’re going to be proud to contribute to Europe,” Rama said during an interview in …

TIRANA, June 3 (Reuters) – Thousands of Albanians took to the streets of Tirana on Tuesday night protesting against a development planned by a company linked with Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner on an environmentally sensitive part of the Adriatic coast.  The €1.4 billion ($1.6 billion) resort is being ‌led by Kushner’s investment firm Affinity ‌Partners on an island off Albania and an undeveloped stretch of coastline near the Vjosa-Narta protected landscape, a wetland home to flamingos, seals and sea turtle nesting sites. Environmentalists oppose the plan, which they say would impact several hundred hectares of pristine beaches. Developers say they will progress responsibly.  “Our focus remains on responsible stewardship, environmental enhancement, job creation, and creating long-term value for local communities. We respect the ongoing public and institutional processes,” said Asher Abehsera, chairman of Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, which is developing the plans in partnership with Kushner’s firm. Affinity Partners and Kushner did not respond to requests for comment. Protesters gathered outside the office of Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama on Tuesday evening, holding inflatable …

Serb Minister Among Officials on Trial Over Kushner-Linked Real Estate Project in Belgrade

Serb Minister Among Officials on Trial Over Kushner-Linked Real Estate Project in Belgrade

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbia’s Culture Minister Nikola Selakovic and three other officials went on trial on Wednesday on charges of abuse of office and falsifying documents in connection with a real estate project that was to be financed by a company of Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. Kushner has since withdrawn from the planned multi-million investment that envisaged building a high-rise hotel, a luxury apartment complex, office spaces and shops to replace a sprawling bombed-out military complex in central Belgrade. The plan was backed by the government of Serbia’s autocratic President Aleksandar Vucic who had said it would help improve ties with the U.S. But the Serbian public and international heritage groups opposed the idea to turn the protected cultural heritage zone into a commercial compound. Built by prominent 20th century Yugoslav architect Nikola Dobrović, the building was damaged in the 1999 U.S.-led NATO bombing of Serbia over Kosovo. Many Serbs are still angry over the air war, launched to stop Belgrade’s crackdown against separatist ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. The building is …
