Eagle Rock’s Read Books launched revolt against Los Angeles landlords

Eagle Rock’s Read Books launched revolt against Los Angeles landlords

On a Tuesday evening in Eagle Rock, used-bookstore owners Jeremy and Debbie Kaplan were closing up for the day when a stranger rushed through the entrance. He tossed an envelope onto the counter, said something like: “Building’s been sold,” and slipped out. Inside the envelope, the Kaplans found a 30-day notice: The shop’s $1,200 monthly rent would be increasing to $2,805 on April 1, they were required to decide whether they would accept the more than 133% price hike a month in advance, and they’d need to agree to a three- to five-year lease if so. The letter arrived Feb. 17, which meant the Kaplans had 11 days to accept the new landlord’s terms or leave. “We couldn’t even consider it,” Jeremy Kaplan said. “It would be suicide.” The couple looked around the 680-square-foot shop. From the floor to ceiling, more than 20,000 books were crammed every which way into shelves they’d built and stained themselves nearly 20 years before. “My first reaction was panic,” he said. “How are we going to move out of …

Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. For the last few years, I’ve been struggling to find the balance between comfortable and cute in my summer wardrobe. The clothes that I do have fall into one of those two categories, but never both. If you ask me, the platonic ideal for summer clothes is pieces you can picnic and lounge around in during the day, and wear straight out to drinks. And of course, they need to be breathable and flattering at the same time. While I’ve been searching high and low for that combination, I somehow always end up with grass stains on some of my more precious clothes, or feeling severely underdressed while sipping on my Aperol. Needless to …

HELP tool launched to spot women’s heart attack signs

HELP tool launched to spot women’s heart attack signs

The Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF) has introduced an acronym to help women recognise less obvious symptoms of a heart attack. Called HELP, the acronym stands for: Heaviness over the chest and shortness of breath Extreme fatigue or unusual tiredness Light-headedness or dizziness Pain beyond the chest, such as in the neck, jaw, shoulders or upper back The tool was unveiled at SHF’s United Hearts, One Cause event on Thursday (May 7), which focused on raising awareness of atypical heart attack symptoms in women. The campaign’s tagline is “Spot HELP, Act Fast”, to encourage early medical attention. SHF said its women’s heart health survey pointed to clear awareness gaps. While 85 per cent of respondents recognised common warning signs such as chest pain, fewer than half were able to identify less obvious symptoms, including extreme fatigue and pain outside the chest area. The survey also found that just 11 per cent knew cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women in Singapore, and only 16 per cent said they felt well informed about heart …

Cyber attack advice line launched by DfE to help schools

Cyber attack advice line launched by DfE to help schools

The government has launched a new advice service for schools on how to deal with cyber attacks, amid concerns education is “disproportionately targeted” but has weaker defences than other sectors. The DfE’s Cyber Security Hub is an online service which aims to provide schools with clear, practical guidance to help improve their IT security. It includes resources and support for schools, guidance on how to create a cyber support plan along with a template, and information for schools in response to specific cyber attacks. A presentation about the new service was delivered at the Schools and Academies Show. Arati Patel-Mistry, the DfE’s cyber security sector lead, said the new service would provide “digestible, clear and understandable” information for all members of staff in the event of a cyberattack. The service was tested across different types of schools before it was launched, including primaries, secondaries, special schools, trusts and local authorities. Martin Sivorn, deputy director and chief information security officer at the DfE, said they had “a body of evidence” that showed education was “disproportionately” targeted by …

Newsbrand launched by ex-Observer staff expands team six months on

The Nerve team including co-founders and new hires at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia in April 2026. Picture: Supplied The Nerve, the publication launched six months ago by five former Observer journalists including Carole Cadwalladr, is expanding its team. The outlet is hiring two investigative journalists and two columnists, saying the “incredible support” from paying readers has allowed it to do so. They include Sangita Myska, who was a regular host on LBC until her time at the station was ended “prematurely”, as political commentator. Listeners speculated that her departure was linked to an interview she carried out with an Israeli government spokesperson and The Nerve noted that she has “gained a name for her fearless commentary on Gaza”. The Nerve was launched by Cadwalladr (its investigative journalist), ex-Observer New Review deputy editor Sarah Donaldson (now Nerve editor-in-chief), editor Jane Ferguson (now executive editor) and senior editor Imogen Carter (now head of culture), and former Observer creative director Lynsey Irvine (now also creative director). They used their redundancy payments from Guardian News & Media …

Fadel Senna | AFP | Getty Images An already shaky ceasefire between the United States and Iran appeared to be on the verge of collapse Monday, as the United Arab Emirates came under attack from Iranian drones and missiles and the U.S. said it sank Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump, in a Fox News interview later Monday, warned Iran that it will be “blown off the face of the earth” if it targets U.S. ships that are protecting commercial vessels transiting the strait. Trump also said in a Truth Social post that a South Korean cargo ship had come under fire from Iran in the waterway. “Perhaps it’s time for South Korea to come and join the mission!” Trump wrote in the post. Stock market indices closed sharply lower and oil prices rose on Monday, as investors’ fears grew that the war’s impact on the global economy …

Apple Launched AirTag 5 Years Ago Today

Apple’s AirTag item tracker turns five years old today, with the $29 accessory having spent half a decade as the best-selling item tracker in the world. The ‌AirTag‌ launched on April 30, 2021, alongside the M1 iMac, a new iPad Pro, and a new Apple TV 4K. The coin-shaped accessory has a polished stainless steel back, IP67 water resistance, and a U1 Ultra Wideband chip that powers Precision Finding, a feature that combines haptic, visual, and audio feedback to guide users to a lost item’s precise location with the iPhone 11 and later. Setup works by bringing the tag close to an iPhone, with each ‌AirTag‌ appearing in the Items tab of the Find My app. The ‌Find My‌ network, which relies on Bluetooth signals from nearby Apple devices to relay location data, allows a lost item to be tracked even when out of direct range. The ‌AirTag‌ is priced at $29 for a single tag or $99 for a four-pack, with free engraving available. Reports of the AirTag being misused for stalking and vehicle …
