Fed Gov Lisa Cook fires back at Trump threat to oust her

Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook participates in a board meeting at the Federal Reserve on March 19, 2026 in Washington, DC. Kevin Dietsch | Getty Images A lawyer for Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook on Wednesday pushed back on President Donald Trump’s revived effort to remove her from the central bank, telling the White House in a five-page letter that allegations of mortgage fraud against her “remain unfounded and untrue.” Lawyer Abbe Lowell’s defense of Cook came just before the deadline for a reply that Trump aide Dan Scavino set three weeks earlier, when he wrote to Cook that there is “sufficient reason to believe that you made false statements on one or more mortgage agreements.” Trump, who wants the Fed to sharply lower interest rates, first moved to fire Cook, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, in late August 2025. He took that step after Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte sent a criminal referral to the Department of Justice accusing Cook of possible mortgage fraud, alleging she claimed two different …

Trying for a baby? These lifestyle habits may boost your fertility odds : NPR

So you’re trying for a baby. Congratulations! By now, you probably know that it’s not always easy to get pregnant. Healthy, heterosexual couples in their 20s to early 30s having regular, unprotected sex have a 25% to 30% chance of getting pregnant in any given month, according to the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists. Many elements factor into those odds, says reproductive endocrinologist Lucky Sekhon. That includes medical history, genetics, hormone balance, timing and just pure luck. “Trying to get pregnant is like playing a slot machine,” she says. “You can pull the lever by timing your attempts around ovulation, but whether things line up and you hit the jackpot are not in your control.” However, there are some lifestyle changes both men and women can make that can help boost your odds. That means making choices that support fertility, not hinder it — like getting regular exercise or cutting out cannabis, nicotine and alcohol. Here are seven evidence-backed ways that may improve fertility. For a deeper dive on this topic, listen to our …

You Can Only Learn 9 Things About Someone When You Go For A Ride In Their Car

Like clothing and our homes, our cars are a window into our personalities, for better and worse. In fact, there are some things you can only learn about a person when you go for a ride in their car with them. Even the way they drive with passengers and interact with other drivers can tell you a lot about their empathy and mindfulness, sometimes in ways you’d completely miss in other environments. You only learn these things about someone when you ride in their car 1. How well-regulated they are Drazen Zigic | Shutterstock Our emotional regulation skills directly impact how aggressively we drive, according to a 2025 study. The more emotionally regulated someone is, the less likely they are to have road rage or let minor inconveniences like traffic affect their entire mood. While deep conversations or conflict might tell you how someone regulates their emotions, sometimes you get a sneak peek quickly when you’re driving with them in their car. The kindness of strangers: I was a young, solo tourist when a taxi driver became aggressive – then two men stepped in | Australian lifestyle

I travelled alone a lot when I was younger and often got myself into stupid situations. You think you’re immortal when you’re in your 20s. One such occasion happened when I was 25 and travelling solo in Egypt, not long after the turn of the century. I had taken an overnight bus from Cairo to Dahab, which dropped me and my fellow passengers off in the middle of nowhere. I had to get a shared taxi into town at about 3am – one where everyone sat up the back in a ute tray – then find somewhere to stay. I was the only tourist in the taxi and definitely the only woman. When we reached Dahab, things quickly went south. I didn’t speak Arabic, so I couldn’t understand what the driver was saying, but it was quite obvious he was becoming increasingly aggressive toward me. As things got more and more heated, two Egyptian men who were also in the back of the ute stepped in. The taxi driver was gesturing to me and the …

The moment I knew: Days after September 11, we flew through turbulence – all I could say was ‘I love you’ | Australian lifestyle

I noticed Justine before she noticed me. We were at a literary award ceremony, and she was wearing a dress upcycled from a black Velvet Elvis painting, talking to a man three times her age. I asked my friend, Carol, who knew everyone, why I’d never seen her before. Carol explained that she was an Australian academic, researching the history of publishing, and led me across the room. “Justine,” Carol said. “You’re researching science fiction in New York. This is Scott, he’s a science fiction writer in New York.” Justine turned from the older man, glanced at me, then shook her head. “Not my period.” I was too young. She was studying science fiction’s golden age, a time before either of us was born. No one under 80 was relevant, or worth remembering. A week later, we ran into each other at a reading. This time we talked. We discovered we’re both fans of Samuel R Delany, Octavia Butler, Ursula K Le Guin, eggs with hot sauce, bushwalking, and exploring new cities. We were seeing other …

People Who Are Happy With Their Lives Care Less About 10 Things As They Get Older

Being present is important to leading a happy, mindful life. It often means ignoring distractions that don’t matter. This could mean ignoring drama from negative people, letting go of draining relationships, or stepping away from toxic work culture. As people get older and happier, they stop caring about things that don’t matter. They protect their energy and focus on things that actually make them happier. Here are 10 things that genuinely happy people stop caring about as they get older: 1. Drama and gossip Krakenimages.com | Shutterstock.com The most miserable people are usually the ones who speak badly about others, because they have nothing interesting to share about themselves. Their sense of self-worth relies on putting others down, because they refuse to grow and evolve into the kind of person they’re actually proud of. No, not all gossip is bad, especially among people you know and trust, but most of the time, it spreads a kind of negativity that’s hard to shake. Nobody wants to feel burdened by a secret they weren’t supposed to hear or pretend everything’s …
