L.A. Chef Says His Jewish Deli Is a ‘Culinary Multi-State Solution’

L.A. Chef Says His Jewish Deli Is a ‘Culinary Multi-State Solution’

Chef Eric Greenspan, the seasoned L.A. restaurateur who often materializes on the food TV circuit, has debuted Mish, his modern update on the classic Jewish deli in Mid City. “I’ve always been jealous of chefs who’ve explored their own personal culinary memories as children and their own family culinary traditions,” says the James Beard Foundation finalist. “I’ve never done that in my career — until now.” Greenspan has cooked under the likes of Alain Ducasse, Ferran Adria and Joachim Splichal. He’s also been a disciple since childhood of delicatessens. Or, as he puts it, “a student of the game,” studying during pilgrimages to the likes of Katz’s in Manhattan. But, Greenspan insists, they’re a genre in need of an overhaul for the appetites of younger generations. “I’m cooking for 20-, 30- and 40-year-olds and their kids — not 60-, 70- and 80-year-olds.” “I love the legacy Jewish delis: I stand on the shoulders of giants,” he says. “But not much has changed in the past 65 years. And yet the perception of Jewish food has …

Nithya Raman Defeats Spencer Pratt, Will Advance to Runoff Vs. Bass

Nithya Raman Defeats Spencer Pratt, Will Advance to Runoff Vs. Bass

Spencer Pratt, who for a brief dizzying moment went from reality-show afterthought to the potential next mayor of Los Angeles, is back to being the person from that reality show. The Associated Press late Monday afternoon officially called second place for his progressive rival Nithya Raman, after six days of the City Council member steadily gaining ground as more and more ballots were counted. A new batch of votes Monday took Raman’s lead from 3,000 when the day started to more than 21,000 at its close. With just 8 percent, or 65,0000, of ballots outstanding, Raman’s lead was deemed insurmountable, and the AP called it. Raman will now face incumbent mayor Karen Bass in a November runoff in a battle between two onetime Democratic allies who will argue over whether the city needs a steady moderate hand or a new progressive one to combat the many issues facing it. Raman posted to X and Instagram several hours after the election was called, saying she was “incredibly honored that voters have given us the opportunity to …

‘It’s Not a Joke’: A ‘Simpsons’ Writer Holds His First Presidential Campaign Rally

On a sunny Friday afternoon in a park overlooking the Silver Lake Reservoir in Los Angeles, about 30 people—including three in costume as Uncle Sam, Darth Vader, and Elsa from Frozen—gathered to hear the first official stump speech of Dan Greaney, candidate for the 2028 US presidential election. “My fellow Americans,” Greaney began, standing at a lectern in front of a row of American flags flapping in a light breeze. After this opening, he added, “Yeah, let’s go with that. It’s a classic.” That self-aware little aside is the sort of thing you’d expect from a veteran TV writer who has worked on The Simpsons since its golden era in the 1990s. Apart from penning classic episodes like “Summer of 4 Ft. 2″ and “King-Size Homer,” Greaney is also known for writing “Bart to the Future,” a flash-forward episode, originally aired in 2000, in which Lisa Simpson is the newly inaugurated US president and struggling with a financial mess left behind by her predecessor. “As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President …

Miley Cyrus, Kerry Washington, and More Rejoice As Hermès Descends in Bel Air

There was lots to want, for Cyrus et al., in this collection, one of Vanhee’s most impactful in some time. At a preview, the free-spirited French designer, who spent years at The Row before joining Hermès in 2014, spoke about the wide range of her inspirations while prancing barefoot in a makeshift showroom at a film studio complex in Culver City. She said she loves LA, a city that inspired the pungent color palette in her lineup. “Los Angeles [has] this color that is unreachable in Europe,” she said: A sharp suit in bright red satin reminiscent of the interior decor in an old Hollywood home (earlier that day, I had visited the home of famed LA decorator Hutton Wilkinson, with its red satin pillows sitting on animal print furniture); an embroidered letterman’s jacket in a washed scarlet and a pastel yellow leather coat, both the kinds of bright hues made softer by the constant exposure to sun one spots around the city; an almost-black deep violet bomber jacket finished with speckles of glitter under …

James Handy’s girlfriend breaks silence after her son is arrested for suspicion of murder in beloved actor’s death

James Handy’s girlfriend has spoken out after her son was arrested in connection to the murder of the beloved Hollywood actor. Officers found Handy unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to his chest in the front yard of a Los Angeles home Wednesday morning. The 81-year-old, known for his decades-long career as an iconic character actor, was pronounced dead at a hospital. Investigators arrested the son of Handy’s girlfriend, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, on suspicion of murder, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a release. Officials said he lived at the residence, located in the Tarzana neighborhood, with his mother, who has been identified by media reports as Wendy Gledhill. Wendy Gledhill told TMZ her son suffers from mental health issues, including schizophrenia, and stopped taking his medication last week. “They know I loved him so much,” she said of Handy’s family. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry this happened. I’m still in shock. I still can’t comprehend it.” James Handy was found fatally stabbed on a front lawn in LA this week. The …

King died after “a courageous and characteristically determined battle with colon cancer”, the Mobo Organisation said in a statement on Friday 5 June. “She was surrounded by her family, close friends and love.” King, the youngest of nine children raised in a cramped council flat in Kilburn, north London, was best known as the tenacious visionary who was instrumental in elevating Black music and culture into the mainstream in the UK. She established the Mobos in 1996 while faced with industry scepticism and racist attitudes – she was told Black music was “too niche, that there was no market and that the industry was not interested”. King persisted, remortgaging her flat to fund it and build a stage …

Italy has banned two shows involving West and fellow US musician Travis Scott, which had been due to take place on 17 and 18 July in the northern city of Reggio Emilia. Salvatore Angieri, the local prefect, made the decision to cancel the events on grounds of public order and safety, including the potential for protests. West, 48, is yet to address the news on his social media, where he has previously spoken about cancelled dates. The Independent has contacted a representative of Scott for comment. This is the latest blow to West’s touring schedule, which has come up against significant disruption in certain regions due to his past anti-semitic and pro-Nazi comments. Last month, Swiss football club FC Basel blocked a concert that …

MTV star Spencer Pratt gaining in Los Angeles mayoral race against Karen Bass

MTV star Spencer Pratt gaining in Los Angeles mayoral race against Karen Bass

Spencer Pratt’s campaign for Los Angeles mayor began as a celebrity long shot. Days before Tuesday’s primary, the former MTV reality star is threatening to force incumbent Mayor Karen Bass into a November runoff. Pratt, best known for “The Hills,” is polling at 22% among likely voters in a new UC Berkeley-Los Angeles Times poll, just behind Bass at 26% and City Councilmember Nithya Raman at 25%. Pratt and Raman each gained eight percentage points since March, according to the poll. Los Angeles mayoral elections are nonpartisan. If no candidate wins more than 50% in Tuesday’s primary, the top two finishers advance to a November runoff. In a crowded field, that means Pratt does not need to win outright to upend the race — he only needs to finish ahead of Raman. Although the race is nonpartisan, Pratt is a registered Republican and has drawn attention from conservative media and Trump-aligned figures. He has rejected the “MAGA Republican” label and framed his campaign as a referendum on City Hall competence after the Pacific Palisades fire …

Trump weighs pulling immigration, customs in ‘sanctuary city’ airports

Charly Triballeau | Afp | Getty Images Groups representing the largest U.S. airlines and hotel chains slammed the Trump administration’s potential halt of customs and immigration processing at “sanctuary city” airports, warning such a move could have “devastating” consequences on the industry. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in an interview on Fox News’ “Hannity” on Tuesday night that if “radical left Democrats” aren’t allowing the government to “enforce federal laws … we shouldn’t be processing international flights into their cities either.” The secretary’s comments came just ahead of the FIFA World Cup next month that is expected to bring millions of visitors to host cities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, drawing alarm from the travel industry. Mullin said the Trump administration is “drawing up plans” but isn’t putting anything into place yet. The timing of the idea being floated raises questions about whether the administration is using its leverage to try to persuade cities whose immigration policies …

Spencer Pratt Really Thinks He Can Be the Next Mayor of Los Angeles

Spencer Pratt Really Thinks He Can Be the Next Mayor of Los Angeles

Councilmember Nithya Raman initially looked poised to capitalize on that anger. The progressive candidate, who in previous elections received endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America, entered the race with considerable momentum. Pundits began asking: Is Raman Los Angeles’ Zohran Mamdani? But Raman has struggled to consolidate support from the city’s progressive electorate while also expanding beyond it. Her uneven debate performance left an opening for Pratt, and a recent appearance with left-wing streamer Hasan Piker didn’t do much to move the needle in her direction. “If I’m not gonna get elected mayor because I never apologized to LC, I’ll take that. So you can put that in bold… people can die on the streets because LC got paid millions because I boosted our show and I took the fall as the full villain, and she got to be the poor damsel in distress.” Pratt, meanwhile, has proven surprisingly adept at converting frustration toward the status quo into a political coalition. His biggest base of support is on the Westside and in the Hollywood Hills, …
