Blast map shows carnage in 4 UK cities named as targets by Russia | UK | News

Nuclear strikes on Russia’s 4 named UK targets have been mapped (Image: Getty) Russia has threatened to bomb four UK cities it says are being used to build munitions for Ukraine – and these simulations show what would happen if Putin went nuclear on us. The Kremlin has listed London, Leicester, Reading and Mildenhall in Suffolk where it claims drones and equipment for Ukraine are being made, as well as several locations across Europe. Dmitry Medvedev, the head of Russia’s Security Council, mocked European countries with a post on X, penning a worrying remark which said: “Sleep well, European partners!” On Thursday, Russia hammered civilian areas of Ukraine with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in an attack that stretched for hours from daytime into the night, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 100 others, officials said. Russia launched nearly 700 drones and dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles, primarily targeting civilians, in its biggest aerial barrage in almost two weeks, authorities said. How London would fare if struck by a …

DESI completes largest-ever map of the Universe

DESI completes largest-ever map of the Universe

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has reached a defining milestone in modern cosmology, completing its original five-year survey and delivering the most detailed map of the Universe ever constructed. Operating from the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, DESI has charted more than 47 million galaxies and quasars in three dimensions. The result is a high-resolution cosmic map that stretches across billions of years, offering scientists an unprecedented dataset to probe how the Universe has evolved. Originally scheduled to run through a five-year mission, the project exceeded expectations both in speed and scale. Its success has now secured an extension through 2028, with plans to expand and refine this already vast map of the Universe. How DESI mapped the cosmos On April 15, DESI quietly marked the completion of its primary survey. Its 5,000 fibre-optic “eyes” scanned a region near the Little Dipper, repeatedly locking onto distant sources of light. Each observation captured photons that had travelled for billions of years before reaching Earth. At the heart of DESI is a highly coordinated system. …

Largest ever map of universe captures 47 million galaxies and quasars

A thin slice of the map produced by the DESI five-year survey shows galaxies and quasars above and below the plane of the Milky Way, with Earth at the centre Claire Lamman/DESI collaboration A five-year survey of the sky that has captured more than 47 million galaxies and quasars is now complete, enabling researchers to put the finishing touches on the most detailed map of the universe ever made. The data could help solve the mystery of an apparent weakening of dark energy, which threatens to upend our standard model of the cosmos. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona has been scanning the sky since 2021. Researchers originally expected its survey to gather data on 34 million galaxies and quasars, but DESI surprised researchers with its efficiency. Because of the vast distances involved, some of these extremely faint galaxies have been observed from just 100 or 200 photons. David Schlegel at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California says our previous maps of the cosmos include a total …

Psychologists map out the pathways connecting sacred beliefs to better sex

Psychologists map out the pathways connecting sacred beliefs to better sex

Viewing sexual intimacy as a sacred experience is linked to higher levels of sexual satisfaction and passion, a newly published psychological study reveals. The research shows that finding spiritual meaning in the bedroom operates by enhancing specific relationship habits, such as open communication and staying present in the moment, rather than just increasing the frequency of intimacy. These findings were published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy. Psychologists often study how humans create meaning to navigate and enrich their daily lives. One way people construct meaning is through a process called sanctification. This occurs when a person perceives ordinary aspects of life as having a divine character or a deep, sacred significance. While the word sacred might bring traditional religion to mind, researchers note that sanctification is a psychological reality experienced by people both inside and outside of formal faith communities. When an individual views a part of their life as sacred, they tend to invest extra time and energy into making it flourish. They also tend to use these deeply meaningful areas …

First-ever map documents 33 glacial lakes hidden under the Canadian Arctic

First-ever map documents 33 glacial lakes hidden under the Canadian Arctic

Water hidden beneath Arctic glaciers is moving far more than scientists realized. Now there is a map to prove it. Researchers have identified 37 active subglacial lakes across the Canadian Arctic, including 33 bodies of water that had not been documented before. The lakes sit beneath or partly beneath glaciers. Furthermore, some of them drain or refill so quickly that the ice above them can rise or fall by more than 100 meters in less than a year. The work offers the first decadal inventory of active subglacial lakes in the region. It also adds a new layer to the picture of Arctic ice loss in one of the world’s fastest-changing glacier zones. “Now we can further characterize the way the Arctic environment is changing, which can be an indication of climate change impacts on the region,” said Dr. Wesley Van Wychen, a professor in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo. “Changes in water storage are important in terms of understanding how the speed of glaciers may change. By measuring the draining …

Instead, I saw a stranger ask her, “Do you like children?” She responded to the stranger: “I’m not a MAP.” I had never heard the term before. When I asked her what “MAP” meant, she simply answered that it stands for minor-attracted person. In that moment, I realized something unsettling but important: Children are encountering coded language online long before many parents even know it exists. Why I’m writing about this In my broader research on online harms to children and teens, I examine how the design and governance of websites and apps influence real‑world safety outcomes. My forthcoming research explores how social media platforms, messaging apps and gaming communities succeed and fail at …

Android’s emergency alerts just got a major map upgrade – but change this setting first

Elyse Betters Picaro / ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways Android Wireless Emergency Alerts now include a map. The map shows the affected area and your location. Not all alerts override volume settings unless you choose to do so. Android users just got a potentially life-saving update that makes their phone’s Wireless Emergency Alerts significantly more useful. If you’ve ever been jolted by a shrill alert about a dangerous storm or a missing child, you know what these alerts are. But you’ve probably had your share of alerts about a severe storm or tornado watch, only to look outside and see blue sky. Also: How to set up and and use your phone’s lifesaving emergency features The recent update should make it much easier to see if an alert affects you. Google hasn’t made an official announcement, but a changelog for the recent March 2026 system update revealed that Wireless Emergency Alerts will now include a map view, so you can see what area the alert is …
