The crook, Mario Bustamante Leiva, 50, is residing in the U.S. illegally and will be subject to deportation at the end of his sentence, the DOJ said. Bustamante Leiva was arrested in late April 2025, less than a week after he entered the D.C. restaurant Capital Burger and snatched the purse that — unbeknownst to him — belonged to Noem, who at the time was one of President Donald Trump’s most prominent Cabinet officials. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has not been especially well received by critics, but it is serving one important purpose: introducing new people to the two excellent games it was named after. And for a limited time, you can get in on the fun with a discount. Nintendo announced a temporary promotion from April 12 to May 9: anyone who buys a Nintendo Switch 2 console alongside Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 (the official name of a package containing both games) will get $20 off. This offer works with either the physical or digital version of the Galaxy games, but only if you get a Switch 2 at the same time. You also need to buy them from a participating retailer, which includes Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and GameStop. If my math is right, participating in this promotion would cost a total of $500 between the Switch 2 and the games, down from a total of $520 before taxes. Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is enjoying a stellar second weekend, soaring past the $300 million mark domestically and $600 million worldwide. The sequel is the first Hollywood pic of the year to accomplish either milestone. It’s expected to top the weekend chart with nearly $70 million in domestic ticket sales for an estimated North American tally of $308.1 million through Sunday. Overseas, it is on course to earn another $90 million from 81 markets for a foreign tally of $327 million. Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary, now in its fourth outing, also remains a force of nature. The Ryan Gosling-led space adventure looks to earn another $28 million this weekend for a domestic cume in the $258 million range through Sunday. A24’s provocative film The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, is holding in better than expected, dropping just 21 percent to $9 million for an early domestic total of $31 million for A24. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is bringing a much-needed spring bloom to the box office, where the family pic is now on course to collect a record $370.7 million in its global debut from 80 markets, the biggest showing since James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash opened over Christmas 2025. And it is by far the top opening of 2026 among Hollyood titles. Universal’s Saturday estimates shows the sequel on course to open to a mammoth $188.6 domestically, including a three-day weekend gross of $129.4 million, one of the best showings of all time for the Easter corridor, not adjusted for inflation. Overseas, it is headed for estimated foreign opening of $182 million, including previews, for a mammoth global launch not that far behind the first film. When The Super Mario Bros Movie came out in 2023, it came with a rather unlikely tie-in: a range of skincare and bathing products from cosmetics chain Lush. The store, known for its devotion to natural ingredients and support for social justice causes, didn’t seem like the obvious partner for a major video game franchise. Because of this, I thought I should try them out, assuming that my dalliance with beauty journalism would be short-lived. The Guardian’s journalism is independent.
