The Swansea store closed due to underperforming according to the high street chain. On Saturday, shoppers came to pay their respects to the branch, with flower tributes being placed by the building. The Oxford Street store has been a major shopping attraction in the city for many years. The closure was announced in February and 92 jobs were put at risk as a result. A busy M&S store in a popular UK seaside town is closing, putting 50 jobs at risk and leaving locals “devastated”. M&S has confirmed it is shutting its Food Hall in Walton-on-the-Naze, which is currently located at Arthur Ransome Way in the Essex seaside town. The store closure was proposed last month, as the site did not have a “sustainable” future. In a new update, it has now been confirmed that the store will be shutting its doors for good on September 28. The high street retail giant said it plans to redeploy as many colleagues to nearby stores as possible. A number of the UK’s largest supermarkets have increased the pay for their employees, with Aldi and Lidl among the market leaders and paying well above minimum wage. As it stands, the National Minimum Wage is £12.21 per hour for those aged 21 years and over. However, seven of the UK’s leading supermarkets are implementing new £13 policies this month, paying their employees more amid ever-increasing costs of living. From April 2026, the statutory minimum wage will increase to £12.71. But the Real Living Wage, which is determined by the Living Wage Foundation, a charitable organisation, is higher than that, and some employers opt to pay that as a minimum rate to their staff. The store, situated on Oxford Street in the heart of the Swansea city centre, has served as a major attraction for shoppers for decades but the retailer has revealed that, following prolonged under-performance, the decision has been taken to shut it. The outlet currently has around 92 employees, all of whom were informed of the closure on Tuesday morning, reports WalesOnline. Staff will now enter consultation regarding possible future positions at alternative M&S locations, whilst the firm has yet to confirm any details concerning redundancies at this point. A precise closure date for the shop hasn’t been finalised, but it’s anticipated to occur later in 2026. Marks & Spencer has confirmed it will close four of its supermarket cafes next month as it shifts its focus to food halls. The four closures will be taking place across Kent, with closing dates yet to be confirmed. M&S says customers will be informed when the cafes will close over the next few weeks, and it is believed employees at the site will be transferred to the shop’s food halls.
