Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. If there’s one trend that’s defined the last few years, it’s the indomitable rise of matcha. While the green drink might not be for everyone, matcha has taken over the world so much that there are shortages across the world. The horrors! But it’s not a habit that’s good for your bank account. Every morning I walk past not one, not two, but three separate Blank Streets – and let me tell you, the temptation is real. Unfortunately for me, I can’t possibly afford to buy a matcha every time a craving hits me. So when the new Bird & Blend Matcha Whisk landed on my desk, I knew everything was about to change. …

Can dark chocolate and matcha lower cortisol? An endocrinologist reveals the best foods for stress

Can dark chocolate and matcha lower cortisol? An endocrinologist reveals the best foods for stress

You may have heard lots of talk lately about cortisol – commonly known as the ‘stress hormone’. While its presence in the body is perfectly natural, excessive levels can become a silent threat to our physical and mental well-being.  “While cortisol is essential for your body to respond properly to specific moments of stress, if it’s high for too long, it can really cause some serious issues,” notes clinical psychologist and executive coach, Pilar Guerra Escudero. Under normal circumstances, cortisol follows a circadian rhythm; it is at its highest levels in the morning and then gradually tapers off over the course of the day. But if your cortisol remains constantly elevated, your body stays in a permanent state of high alert – and that’s when the trouble starts.  The effects on the body aren’t limited to just one area – everything from aches and pains and insomnia to irritability, anxiety, skin flare-ups, digestive issues and even fertility problems can possibly be linked to elevated cortisol levels. © Getty Images/iStockphotoCortisol is necessary for your body to …

Could a hot cup of matcha stop you from sneezing?

Could a hot cup of matcha stop you from sneezing?

Hay fever sufferers have attempted various treatments and techniques. They have tried antihistamines, nasal sprays, air purifiers, and staying indoors when pollen counts are at their highest. The number of partial solutions is extensive. A recent study by Hiroshima University in Japan, however, indicates a very nonclinical solution: matcha, the finely powdered green tea originating in Japan and used in everything from lattes to baked goods. Professor Osamu Kaminuma from the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine conducted the research. He discovered that after receiving matcha over a course of several weeks, mice engineered to express symptoms of hay fever showed a dramatic decrease in sneezing. The amount was reduced to almost zero. What was more remarkable was where the effect seemed to originate. It did not appear to originate from any immune response. Matcha reduced sneezing in mice without affecting the immune reaction, suggesting it may relieve symptoms without altering allergic nasal pathogenesis. Coffee vs. Matcha: Which One Is Better for You?

Coffee vs. Matcha: Which One Is Better for You?

Most of us are trying to optimize something. Our sleep score. Our protein intake. Our morning routine. But when it comes to your morning caffeine fix, old habits die hard. Coffee’s been the default for decades, but matcha’s quickly become a strong contender for a pick-me-up. When you put them head to head, does one actually make you sharper, more energized, and healthier? Coffee vs. matcha According to Tim Spector, MD, FRCP, FRSB, epidemiologist and co-founder of ZOE, coffee might have an edge simply because it’s been studied far more extensively than matcha. Some highlights on the preventative front: Research shows that coffee intake is inversely associated with risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease; it’s also been linked to lower risk of certain cancers, including prostate cancer, in some studies. Want to get trim? On the getting fit front, one meta-analysis found that higher coffee intake may be modestly associated with reduced adiposity (body fat), particularly in men. It has mental benefits too. A new long-term study found that higher coffee …

I tried the trending ‘matcha’ scrub and balm duo for dry lips – here’s my honest review

I tried the trending ‘matcha’ scrub and balm duo for dry lips – here’s my honest review

We all know the pain of dry, chapped lips as temperatures drop in the winter months. The lower humidity outside acts like a sponge, and pulls the moisture out of your mouth. As such, employing products that will shield and hydrate becomes paramount at this time of year.  As a self proclaimed lip balm enthusiast I have tried and tested my fair share of products to promote hydration. And in my humble opinion, the best way to do this is through a scrub and balm duo. A scrub does the heavy lifting to remove dead cells, whilst a well-formulated balm will lock in moisturise and nourish.   So, when I discovered Sync Beauty’s Lip Care Set, featuring not just a lip balm but also a lip scrub, I was immediately intrigued.  I tested Sync Beauty’s trending lip care duo Sync Beauty is an indie beauty brand born in the UK in 2024. Since its launch, it has earned a spot in the iconic Harrods beauty hall and totted up an impressive roster of famous customers, …

Extravagant coffee and matcha drinks in Los Angeles

Extravagant coffee and matcha drinks in Los Angeles

In a coffee city like Los Angeles, it’s no surprise that many coffee shops, teahouses and cafes take creativity to the next level. The sweet syrups and aesthetic latte art that marked our entry into customizable coffee culture were only the beginning — springboards for today’s caffeine scene where different flavors of fluffy cream tops and unique toppings, from sugar rims to cob-shaped corn ice cream, draw crowds to shops across the city. Here, dramatic drinks take inspiration from a wealth of cultures and cuisines, from East Asian cafes and bubble tea shops where add-ons are the star to third-wave coffee shops highlighting flavors from around the world. “We wanted something on the menu that was kind of a destination drink,” said Max Rand, the owner of Good Friend, a coffee shop that opened in East Hollywood last year. “That’s become a really popular thing in L.A. especially: something that people will go out of their way for, will drive across town for. It has to be interesting enough for someone to go out of …
