Marilyn Monroe’s personal memorabilia heads to auction ahead of 100th birthday

Marilyn Monroe’s personal memorabilia heads to auction ahead of 100th birthday

SALE TO COINCIDE WITH BIRTHDAY Heritage Auctions is opening bidding to the public on items from the estate of poets Norman and Hedda Rosten, close friends and confidants of Monroe.  The sale, which happens June 1, coincides with what would have been the star’s 100th birthday and features personal belongings dating from 1955 to 1962. Among the most striking offerings are documents never seen publicly, shedding light on Monroe’s inner life. The papers explore her romantic relationships, fears surrounding a lost pregnancy, and her reflections on mortality. “It’s really special because this isn’t material that’s been bought and sold over the decades,” Chanes said. “This is something that’s a discovery.” From costume jewellery Monroe wore to artwork she once held in her hands, the collection offers buyers intimate access to her personal world. The auction also includes correspondence from her ex-husband, playwright Arthur Miller, revealing the emotional complexities of their marriage as well as an unseen letter from Monroe’s psychiatrist describing the day leading up to her death. Chanes highlighted one particularly emotional piece from …

Christie’s .5 Million Jim Irsay Sale Sets 28 Records and shakes up Memorabilia Market

Christie’s $94.5 Million Jim Irsay Sale Sets 28 Records and shakes up Memorabilia Market

For a few days in March, Christie’s Rockefeller Center galleries felt less like an auction house than a public exhibition of 20th-century mythmaking. Fans came to see Kurt Cobain’s guitar, Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger,” and John Lennon’s piano from “Sgt. Pepper” and Ringo Starr’s “Ed Sullivan” drum kit up close. Then the sales began, and what had been a museum-like display turned into something louder, faster, and far more competitive. Across four sales, the Jim Irsay Collection brought in $94.5 million, making it the highest-grossing memorabilia auction ever staged. Every lot sold, with the cumulative take totaling nearly four times the low estimate. The series also set 28 world records.  Related Articles Many of those records clustered at the top end, where instruments and manuscripts tied to canonical figures in music and literature continue to define the category. David Gilmour’s “Black Strat” led the sale at $14.55 million, setting a new benchmark for any guitar at auction. Jerry Garcia’s custom-built “Tiger” followed at $11.56 million, while Kurt Cobain’s Fender Mustang from the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video reached …

This is now the most valuable piece of Star Wars memorabilia

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Darth Vader’s reign has ended. For a brief time, he owned the mantle of “Most Expensive Piece of Star Wars Memorabilia,” but before you could say “more wealth than you can imagine” he fell once again, with a new challenger rising to take his place. It was only this past September that a verified screen-used lightsaber hilt wielded by the Dark Lord of the Sith in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi set a sales record by fetching $3.65 million. It was a high bar, but it’s already been cleared.  The family of late Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz recently put a rare and valuable piece of artwork up for auction: Tom Jung’s original halfsheet painting depicting the heroes of the Rebellion, soaring X-Wing starfighters, and the looming head of Vader himself. Heritage Auctions ended up selling the piece for a staggering $3.875 million–setting a new record. Experts credit two things for the incredible value of this piece …
