Things got a little morbid at SXSW London‘s headline Michelle Obama session on Tuesday. The former first lady was speaking with her brother, Craig Robinson, at a live recording of their podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson. The year-old podcast usually involves a guest, but Obama kicked off the session by declaring they’d be “flipping the script” and, sans guest, would be interviewing each other. The conversation was dappled with sibling banter, of course, as Obama teased her older brother over being a “finance bro” and his marriages, prompting audience laughter. Barack and Michelle Obama‘s production company Higher Ground is transitioning to an independent operation following eight years at Netflix. Barack Obama shared the news at an event held Saturday in Philadelphia that featured leaders in media, sports and entertainment as part of a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. Speaking on separate panels, both Barack and Michelle Obama talked about their work with Higher Ground. The former president said that after eight years of working exclusively with Netflix and being “very grateful for the launch that happened,” the Obamas are “in the process now of transitioning to a more independent [company] where we can work with a bunch of different studios.” The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to a rep for Higher Ground for comment. The Obamas inked their producing deal with Netflix in 2018. In 2024, Higher Ground and Netflix extended their partnership, with Higher Ground transitioning to a multiyear first-look deal for all of its film and TV projects. Michelle Obama has raised eyebrows again after she failed to attend civil rights icon, Rev. Jesse Jackson’s, memorial service on Friday, over 12 months after she was a no-show at Jimmy Carter’s funeral. The former first lady left her husband, Barack Obama, to fly solo at the ceremony, held at the House of Hope in the Obamas’ hometown of Chicago. While Barack attended without his wife, former presidents Bill Clinton and Joe Biden were joined by their respective wives, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Dr. Jill Biden. HELLO! has contacted representatives for Michelle and Barack for comment. Last January, Michelle raised questions when she failed to join her husband at the funeral of the 39th President, Jimmy Carter, which was held at the Washington National Cathedral on January 9.
