Families in an idyllic coastal village better known for its colony of little terns have reacted with fury to secretive Home Office plans to house asylum seekers there. Residents of Gronant in Flintshire, which has a population of around 1,600, have been told that 13 of 15 new homes at the former Gronant Institute site are due to be used by Clearsprings, a company working for the Home Office, to accommodate families awaiting decisions on their asylum claims. Migrants are being smuggled from the UK to Europe, an investigation has found. People-smugglers are taking £1,000 per person to take migrants across the English Channel and into Europe. The Telegraph found that this opens up free movement across European borders. People can pay an extra £500 to get to Spain using a “taxi service”. The country is offering amnesty for illegal migrants in an attempt to boost its economy. The newspaper found that adverts for the service appear on social media, resembling holiday promotions with images of tourist hotspots such as Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum and the Brandenburg Gate. Other adverts reportedly target students who have overstayed their visa. Peter Walsh, a senior researcher at Oxford University’s Migration Observatory, suggested that escaping immigration enforcement could be one of the benefits of going on the journey. The footage of tens of thousands of illegal migrants, the vast majority of them young men, pouring across the Spanish border at Ceuta is truly horrifying. But this latest influx didn’t appear out of thin air. Spain is perhaps the starkest example of how a soft touch on illegal migration only invites more of the same. In April, the Spanish Government announced plans to grant an amnesty to almost all of the country’s illegal migrants. They predicted that half a million people would apply for legal settlement; in fact, more than a million have applied for the scheme thus far. And earlier this month, the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that migrants arriving in Ceuta by sea could not be automatically removed to Morocco. Instead, they have to be processed through Spain’s ordinary immigration system – a decision which sent a clear signal to migrant smuggling networks that they’d face no real consequences for helping people into Spain. Nearly 100 illegal migrans landed on the shores of the Balearics in Spain in just 24 hours. This comes after the news that over 3,200 migrants arrived in around 170 small boats since the start of the year. The Guardia Civil, the Formentera Fire Brigade and the Red Cross intercepted 32 subn-Saharans at 9.10am on July 17, off the coast of Cabrera, according to the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands. At 1.40pm, six north Africans were assisted to shore. At 5.10pm, a further 30 sub-Saharans were rescued by the Maritime Rescue Service. And just after midnight on July 18, 27 Africans were intercepted. According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior and the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands, more than 3,200 migrants have arrived in the Balearics so far this year on 170 small boats.
